Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Just play the campaign first.
That doesn't help the campaign when going for your second, third, fourth (etc) run. I've played the Halo campaigns are my most played FPS campaigns, except for ODST, and that's because of Firefight.

I know this is an old comment in regards to Halo, but seeing Reach in screenshots does not do the game justice. The added animation and particle effects really give it a unique look.

exactly. for example, mlb 10 the show, looks amazing, but as soon as the players mover, i think that the animation is terrible and it kind of ruins the beauty. i'd much rather have slightly less appealing stills in service of beautiful movement.

Let me get out ahead on this and say that I don't think taking the MP environments from SP is a bad thing at all. If anything this will likely lead to more frenetic firefights in SP since the levels are designed with cover and multiple paths in mind.

Also seeing the new animations with the Elites in combat was fantastic. It's just so nice seeing an athletic adversary on the battlefield.

They also said the MP levels would be different from SP. These won't be pixel identical to what you see in the campaign. An example given was a night level in the campaign being set in the afternoon for MP.

Personally I'm hoping for the option for multiple day/night options for each level.

What you saw was it the ViDoc?

You really think there will symmetrical arenas in campaign? I suppose I could be wrong - one advantage of using campaign environments is the AI (for Firefight) already knows how to navigate it. But I'll be shocked if they're just doing geometry rips for all MP maps. Doesn't fit with how Bungie makes their games, at all.
Sorry. I wasn't sure what you meant by the "...". I don't know if they're going to be symmetrical arenas in campaign, but the tweet said that the maps "come directly from campaign." Though I suppose that the tweet does leave room for more than interpretation...

Gah. I'll reserve judgment. I won't look to ODST as an example, seeing as how that was handled by a smaller team. Hype back up.

Appreciate the updates.

I don't understand this decision though. To me it reads like what they do in CoD. Grab chunks of the SP environments and tweak them to fit the MP. This kinda works for CoD because the map layout doesn't mean nearly as much with map control a non-issue and the spawns being random as fuck. Don't see how it would work for Halo's MP.

In Halo 3 there were a few maps (i.e. citadel, construct, ghost town, high ground, rat's nest, standoff, and Valhalla) that were vaguely based on parts of the campaign environments but not even close to the extent those quotes seem to indicate. I'd really love to know exactly what Bungie said regarding this. I just can't see it being true.

The armor upgrades along will fundamentally change a lot about Halo's MP. Seeing the sprint in motion, I was a happy man. No more wading through water for this Spartan, I've got rocket boots.

My head exploded at all the screens, the boxart and new information. :)

But the idea of Bungie pulling an IW for Multiplayer maps is kind of a shock to me. Bungie is one of the few developers that differentiates the play spaces between Campaign and Multiplayer and now they're just making them essentially the same, except in one space you fight AI and the other you fight actual players. :/

I can't believe I'm thinking this far ahead, but I hope Reach's DLC has map re-makes and UNIQUE Multiplayer maps.

Ah yes, forgot about those. Does the sprinting just excel the spartan forward quicker, or is there a movement animation to go with it. (Like if you were to sprint in Call of Duty or Battlefield)

I was worried the beta would drop in the middle of my finals (April 16-29). Man oh man is finishing this semester going to feel nice :p

I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure you drop your gun when sprinting.

There's a circle with a bar running around the outside. So you have a set amount of time you can sprint for each "charge" of your upgrade.

Stepping into the middle of this map-rage with a map related question.

Did we ever hear if the Halo 2 DLC was going back up? Because I'd really like to get in some Halo 2 before it closes forever but I don't have the DLC on my hard drive. Am I just screwed out of ever playing Turf and Sanctuary again?

Also: Boo to MP maps ripped from SP :( Doesn't seem right.

Haha, yeah. I'm really surprised they showed off a MP map without giving the necessary context for such a map will play. They haven't said anything about the structure of MP, if there are loadouts, how armor abilities will be acquired, if they're sticking to the quake style weapon layouts, etc.

Anyways, if you get the chance to sit down with someone from Bungie I'd love it if you could pop any of these (relatively) simple and quick questions on them:
  • Are the grenade tosses similar to CE/2/3, more like ODST's, or something new? Any description would be nice.
  • Speaking of grenades, any changes to their radius or damage from 3 to Reach?
  • Has the basic (non-assassination) melee system changed from 3? Lunge range, damage, etc.
  • Beyond the new gameplay features added in Reach like health (yuck), equipment, and anything yet to be revealed; are there any other changes players can expect to feel when playing as a spartan II? For example is the movement speed and jump height of the spartan IIIs any different from the spartan IIs and elites we played in Halo 3.
  • Is the FOV increased from Halo 3 to look more like CE and ODST?

I like how most of you are content with quoting a post that is later clarified in another post. Yet, for some reason, you guys choose to quote this. Whatever.

Hype for Reach has just dropped quite a bit.
Jesus, stfu already.

We had screens, names, and impressions for three Halo 3 maps over five months before the Beta.

This time around, we finally got one name and a concept shot, and we're just over two months away from the Beta. Hopefully the floodgates will burst open soon

I'm personally glad that all the stuff released so far has been Campaign and story. You multiplayer fans can get your fill come beta.

Thanks Dax, I'll make sure to hop on sometime soon and get em. Make sure to keep em too in case they go offline for good.

Excite for the Reach vidoc tomorrow, even with the new about mp maps.

Really wish they allowed filming on the show floor.

Seriously.. my train's in five hours, after that, no more internet (my backup phone can't even load GAF, wish my N95 screen's hadn't died..). Release the vidoc guys, it's already Friday February 12th, 2 AM
well, here at least it is..

"MP maps are taken from campaign" has to mean Firefight maps. Bungie isn't dumb enough to directly rehash campaign environments for MP.

Why must you pull a CoD and have maps that are only ripped from campaign. Boooo...

Though there may be more to this story than we know.
Re-read the quote.

They most likely aren't rehashed maps, but who knows.

Much like Rats Nest is the predecessor of the Campaign level Crows nest. Just because a map is in the same environmental similarities to one in the campaign perse does not make the map in any form "rehashed".

Maybe I just missed the wording, but I figure they just mean the different environments in the campaign will all have their multiplayer counterparts.

I know people may kill me for this but as long as that tired unrealistic Halo animation is gone - flailing arms - or dialed WAY back then day one for me.

I mean who flails their arms after they die?

edit: actually I hardly remember it in H3 lol

Speaking of the gore, the Flood were handy in the trilogy for introducing a very different enemy type later in the game. Since they're (I'm assuming) not in Reach, I'm curious how Bungie will phase in to enemies and combat situations to keep them fresh from end to end.

What I like about this chap is that he appreciates design decisions that most gamers can't or won't understand. A full game of flood-fighting would have sucked, but in modest doses they provided an excellent change of pace.

I particularly enjoyed sequences where every enemy variant was thrown into the mix, often fighting tooth-and-nail against each other (this was just about the coolest thing in Halo 2).

Yeah, I said "chap."

Which enemy does that? Spartans don't flail their arms about. They 'rag doll' like they have a gigantic metal suit of armor on.

I hope the DMR causes people to do backflips when you kill them with a headshot. Snipe should've done that more in H3. Imagine pinging someone while they jump in the air and the force from the bullet flings them back a few feet. Maybe their body bends around the point of impact. That would be amazing.

That sounds very strange, considering the way they handled that in previous Halo games. Bungie has always used campaign assets for MP maps, but they never used exactly the same geometry from Campaign to create MP maps. An obvious example is Construct, clearly inspired by the end of The Ark level, but still quite different. I suppose that's what they meant when they were explaining it.

Anyway, if they really are using the same geometry for Campaign and MP (hope not) the only way I think they can make it work is creating the MP maps first, then addind them as sections of the Campaign. The other way around would be just silly.

Bye ;)

Today has been a good day. I am worried about this whole ripping MP maps from SP business though. I want remakes and maps that are designed around environments that aren't in the campaign. I want variety.

Many of the initial batch of maps for both Halo 2 and 3 came directly from the campaign, albeit tweaked. We don't know enough at this point about the Reach MP maps to claim that the situation will be any worse.

Bungie makes some of the most creative multiplayer maps in the business. They're not stupid. You don't have to worry.

Why are people

a) Complaining the compass is gone from the AR?
b) Even SAYING it's gone from the AR?

Doesn't the screen with the Skirmishers have the AR in it?

I figured the other screen had the new BR or DMR in it.

If the player was holding a BR/DMR in any of the screens you'd know because there wouldn't be any covies left standing.

Yeah, there definitively has to be more to it, hopefully it is just the environments that are copied and not model by model maps.
