Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Something I noticed similar to the first halo, the auto aim assist is much lower here. This is awesome, and is probably the reason they are able to add more precision to something like the AR. In Halo 3 since aiming was so easy they had to dumb down precision, but no more, no more.

The best signifier of this is when he is using the AR against the elite closer to the beginning (it doesn't take 5 clips from that distance to take their shield down anymore).

Edit: Oh hey, I didn't even realize the connection to my avatar.

I've noticed in some pics, the sky seems to have a grainy filter on it, does this only happy when your shield is low in Reach? It seemed ODST had grainy sky all the time which kinda annoyed me since the skyboxes were great otherwise.

There is an overall grain effect. Not as much as ME2, but its noticable on brighter parts, yep. Nice touch I think.

How can you possibly tell?

There's auto aim where it moves the reticle automatically as your target moves, then there's the sandpaper effect, where your reticle moves more slowly when it's over a target, and then there's the "any part of the reticle" assist such that the center of the reticle doesn't have to be on the enemy, just any part of the reticle to register a hit. Pretty hard to tell most of those assists from a video.

Personally when watching the DMR shots on the Skirmishers I thought to myself "he didn't even hit that one" when it died.

I thought the film-grain effect was part of the night vision. Seemed a bit in the ViDoc where it was really obvious and reminded me of ODST VISR mode.

Looks fantastic. The snippets of single player maps looked great, I especially liked the night time one along the cliffside that had a very Truth and Reconcilation vibe. Can't wait for the Beta and a chance to try the new weapons out.

Old pics are old. News at 11.
You don't say. Bungie have some of the best skyboxes, just wondering why they added grain over them. Unless it's only when your character is hurt or whatnot, then I'm fine with that over a big red screen.

Why am I not surprised... not as bad as halo 3 thankfully which cut the horizontal lines down to 640p

I take it all with a pinch of salt as it's from a video rip, it could be totally off scale.

I think its close enough to 720p that it won't make a huge difference to be 1152x720 instead of 1280x720 IMO. As long as your TV's sharpness isn't too sharp it should be fine.

Yeah it's rather plenty, a shame it's not full "720p" but it's better then halo 3's by a mile.

I would forgive H3 more if they had some more lighting and effects but it felt very bare bones rather soon after release.

The ViDoc was awesome (and this is coming from a new fan).

Was it this thread that had the "HATERS GONNA HATE" picture with the bird wearing a hat and a monocle? It was epic. :lol

it seems weird that it would be standard HD resolution vertically, but not horizontally. Wouldn't that stretch everything out when the xbox scaled it fit the screen? IMO, sounds like it's some editing effects in the video causing it.

Stills of the sticky note filled white boards (click 'em for 1280x720):

In a few of the sticky notes, the term "non-linear" is used. I quite enjoy that phrase when connected to video games.

Stills of a storyboard shown off in the video:

I think that's the grenade launcher that's seen earlier in the vidoc. The weird laser sight thingy gives it away.
I think you're right. It looks so small in 3rd person though, relative to its functionality at least...

If you look at the side view of the weapon in the upper right hand corner it looks almost like a giant flintlock pistol to me. Literally a big'ole hand cannon.

You know, I thought it turned on the grain effect due the shields being down. Hence, it even reads Warning on the shield indicator.

Why would they ever use a non 16:9 resolution?

1152 pixels at a 16:9 ratio is 640p, like Halo 3

As someone else suggested, they could be using something similar to an anamorphic technique.

Basically you'd render a horizontally squashed image at 1152x720 and scale it to 1280x720 using the 360s internal scaler which would unsquash the image back to its proper perspective.

Er... Might want to find a non-pr0n host.

Since when does XS serve pr0n ads? Or has my Ad Blocker (disabled for GAF of course) kept me blissfully unaware? Either way, fixed the links to point directly to the image, which I hope is OK.

Some choice bits from the stickies:

"Special badass Elite."
"1st ground mission vs. Covenant" (Implying first mission not on ground?)
"Non linear mission"
"First vehicle (new)"
"Ammo crate"
"Plasma carbine"
"Anti Air Wraith" (I demand the ability to pilot it without glitching)
"Send feedback to ONI"
"Comms down"
"Get the hell out of the city!" (Escape from a city under attack? Yes please!)
"Jetpack Elite" (I hope you can still ride them)
"Non linear mission"
"Covenant artillery piece"
"Limited non linear 'patrol encounter'"

Lovely particle effects. The way the shield gets blown away by the explosion looks amazing.

Hmm... I just noticed there's 3 plasma grenades in that gif but the Elite doesn't seem to be throwing one and the other one just appears out of no where.

Or am I blind?

Much meatier ViDoc than the earlier Halo 3 ones, and god damn the game looks amazing in motion. O_O

This strongly hints at several open world hubs in the campaign with patrols and everything. I guess that the non linear missions are somewhere between ODST's New Mombasa and the Silent Cartographer island in size and complexity.

definitely looks like two plasma nades, but they go straight ahead, no arc or anything. maybe he was firing a plasma rifle?

Two shots from the elite's plasma rifle, then your (well, urk's) plasma grenade.

Looks more like plasma fire to me, possibly from a plasma rifle or a turret.
