Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Oh God :lol

By the way, glad to hear that in the 4p co-op everyone will be using his personal and customized Noble 6: so four noble 6 plus five spartans, if I get that correctly.

Talk about fire power xD

1st day back to Halo in a while, decided to stream. I give a whooping on a team so bad, I get a hilarious hate message. I'm going to start clipping out all of the hate messages I get when I'm streaming, they're awesome. Here's one from a very butthurt person.

Hate starts at :42

Is that a new MLG term, "warrior?" At first I though he was throwing a
homo-erotic
compliment your way, but people try to bash others for trying now? :lol

Warrior is the new sponge. Gets bandied about and I'm pretty sure half the kids screaming it have no idea what it means. I think its xbox live, people with good (or bad) connections that you just cant kill because of the current connection, are "warriors".

Never change MLG community!

That is all fine and dandy, but Bungie PLEASE scale the co op difficulty to how many people are playing. CO OP is no doubt a blast in Halo, but it is also a cake walk even on Legendary with a group of 3 or 4. I want 4 player co op that is actually a challenge without having to turn on skulls that make the game not fun. Borderlands does a phenominal job of scaling the difficulty of the enemies by how many people are playing.

This x100. If I have 4 people in my game on legendary I want it to be hard.

Eh, not sure if I'd like that. There's something to keeping the amount of damage dealt/received the same in each difficulty regardless of the number of players that provides a healthy amount of consistency. Scaling the amount of enemies thrown at the squad could work though. What do you have against the way skulls ramp up the difficulty?

I would like them to continue making the vs. AI modes customizable with more in depth skulls and even wilder ones.

Yes sir. Like, for instance, having a skull that replaces all the grunts with elites.

Which by the way would be sort of an upgrade to one of the existing skull.

If anyone's looking to pass the time til the beta, might I suggest Darksiders or the Battlefield 2 demo, both are so good.

Also, got Legends and Bioshock 2 for my birthday, my wife>you.

If my 6th grade level math skills, and a bit of internet detectivery are correct, then I could host nearly 45 players on my connection.

Halo PC (shitty, shitty netcode) requires at least 768k up in order to host 16 players. A couple of random posts on the internet suggest that Halo 2 is in the 300-400k neighborhood, and Halo 3 is 400-500k. So, worst case scenario, 21mb / 768kb * 16 = 44.8.

The 360 probably runs out of computing power long before hitting 40 players, if it also has to render the game (listen server). Hay Bungle! Let us run our own dedicated servers for Reach. I would buy another 360, and host a 45 player server. :D

Bladed said it right. "Warrior" is thrown around in the MLG community all the fucking time but in reality everyone who plays Xbl is an online warrior. I love getting these hate messages though because I always reply with "<3" Hahahaha, they must get so mad.

It's nice considering speed is an attribute of a Spartan. (At least in the books.) It only took 9 years to implemented in the games.

Interesting picture... 100 to 0... Hmmm, I'm curious as to what happened there. What could it be? Hmmm...
The red team was good and the blue team was terrible and had a shitload of guests. Typical team-stacking terrible social matchmaking.

Has Bungie said anything on whether the player charachter, Noble Six, will be an actual voiced person with backstory etc... or will we have another boring mute charachter who doesn't react to anything a la ODST?

Judging by the fact that he literally says nothing in the trailers, I'm going to go with more of the same. The voiceless person we play as may be relatable, but boy is it getting stale.

Also, "try hard" is a hilarious phrase created by the MLG community. My theory is that it was created by the top MLG players when they lost to "lesser" players. If you beat them, you're a try hard. It's so fucking dumb :lol

As I thought. God damnit, does any one here actually think this is a good thing? This is one of the major reasons the ODST campaign was so forgettable, the main charachter was unrelatable and as a result his teammates became unrelatable as well as they hardly ever acknowledged him.

Seeing as Bungie has stated that this is a "charachter driven story" they're really doing their best to mess this up as a non existant main charachter pretty much ensures that the impact the story has will be lessened.

Bungie, if you're listening you still have time to change this, write up some quick lines and hire someone to act them out. This could be your big E3 announcement, would probably net you some more sales as well.

I guess my biggest issue with the skulls is that they seem like a cheap way to ramp up difficulty. I want Halo Reach to be difficult on Legendary with 4 player co op because of awesome AI and amount of enemies, not because I have to melee an enemy to get my shields back or play without my hud. Famine is also the worst skull in the game. Nothing like picking up a brute shot with 3 shots left in it. Catch, Tough Luck, Cowbell, and Mythic I have no problem with.

I don't think it would be a huge announcement. So far I've eaten a portion of my words in my early critique of Reach. Yes, they're using an old engine and improving it, but man, it really does look great when actually played (screens are so-so so far).

Character development seems to be a focus, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt this time around, and you should too. ODST was paltry as the Rookie, but I liked playing as Nathan Fillion and listening to him talk while playing. Sure, other shooters have a way of integrating this well, but who's to say Bungie can't pull it off in a better way?

The one think I hope for is actual dialogue between the LWG and the other Spartans. Sure he's a lone wolf, but he's not a social deviant. Even the girl Spartan III who didn't talk still communicated effectively to her fellow soldiers, and actually wound up speaking too. It could work out for Reach, you never know.

I'm just dreading the:

*The team are given a sarky response to a question by a superior officer*
Teamate: "Hey Six, he's such a Jackass right?"
Noble Six: *silence*
Same Teamate: *Douchebag snigger in response*

Honestly, one sided conversations add zero to the game. I'd prefer it if the other charachters simply never addressed him at all and you were more of an outside observer of the rest of the team. This would be a much superior way of presenting the story. Lets face it, ODST was by far the weakest game story and presentation wise in the franchise, and yes I'm also including Halo Wars.

I'm currently playing Halo CE on PC and I'm loving every bit of it, but now I reach the library level and I hate it goddam. Are they any cheats available so I could basically do this level in god mod ?

Play it and enjoy it mate. I guarantee you'll enjoy the rest of the game more if you pass this level by yourself.

I'm with you there. I though the line Bungie walked with the Chief was about right, with minimal but necessary dialog. The mute ODST in that game was pretty dumb, and did result in some really awkward scenes. (It's something I hated when I played Half-Life 2 as well, which reduced the idea of a mute player-character to an inside joke.)

If you want the player to be able to identify with or in any way picture themselves in the role of the character they're playing, don't limit that character in arbitrary ways that makes him harder to relate to. I want to feel like I'm part of the team in Reach, not some mute wheel number five.

Note: I'm not assuming the player is mute in Reach, and I'm hoping he's not. It wouldn't make sense and would run counter to the entire idea of a closely knit group of soldiers.

Never played HaloCE on a comp., so i have no idea.

If Bungie is trying to give REACH a view into the human side of spartans, I think having the character you play actually speak, would be important. I'm not too worried about it.

Your math, sir, is truly awful.

First off: if 768Kbit up can host 16 players, 21Mbit (which is 21504Kbit) can host 28 times as many (or 448 players).

Second off: some ISPs give you extra speed at the start of an upload connection - which totally skews bandwidth tests. (For example: I have a Comcast connection on some machines here. If I run a bandwidth test, I consistently see a 2+Mbit upload speed - but if I upload a 100mb file, I find that my upload speed caps out at 128k/sec after the first 8 mb.) I have no idea what Verizon does, but it's possible that your 21Mbit upload is not accurate for longer uses (like, say, LIVE play).

Wow heavies on sandtrap, my least favorite level and my least favorite gametype. I use the rocket launcher on someone in a tank point blank range, doesn't even scratch the person in it, meanwhile i get destroyed. Great...

Listen to this man Bungie, you still have several months till release.

It's a valid concern, but we've only seen a limited portion of any of the game. Doesn't exactly mean that the character we play doesn't speak.

This test starts out slow, and really picks up the pace near the end. Also, I've had no problems saturating my upload for hours on end with multi-threaded connections. VZ truly is the bomb.

P.S. I promise to shut down my pr0n torrents when hosting!

If I recall correctly, there's four floors in all. All of them are basically identical. Save shotgun ammo and run past everything that can be avoided, and find corners and semi-concealed spots to retreat to if you get overwhelmed.
