Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Streamlined Party-Up - After a Halo 3 match, players were presented with the option to "Party Up" and merge lobbies with all willing players. In Reach, it will be an opt-out system. After a match, players will be kept together and it will automatically roll into looking for the next match.
This is literally the only thing I wanted Bungie to borrow from CoD. Nicely done.

Edit: Hmm... I think I misread this feature. Is it a rematch feature, or just a party-up feature? Will all players, both teams, stay be default?

Edit 2: I shoulda kept reading.

The system is flexible enough to allow Bungie to determine, per playlist, whether to keep a team together and find a new set of opponents or keep an entire game together and move onto the next map.
Excited again!

Man, they've taken some great steps to improve matchmaking - I do need more info on the Ranked and Social becoming one and splitting parties and so on, it wasn't as deeply explained as I'd like it to be...

Queue-joining, I'm liking that, very intuitive, so now when you get home you just set that and do whatever until you see that you're in the lobby, nice...

Arena sounds like it'll keep things hot in the competition, and could really get rid of the new Live accounts thing with the way the ranking is in there...

Bungie is looking to set the bar way up high yet again man, this beta is going to be crazy addictive...

New Features:
Active Roster - This is a throwback to Halo 2. When you boot up Reach, right at the main menu or lobby, you'll see a list of what your Xbox Live friends are doing within Reach.

Queue-Joining - In Halo 3, it was difficult to join friends that were already playing in a match. You had to wait until they were finished. If you started a game while you waited, they would then have to wait for you. Instead of going back and forth, Reach will support queue-joining. Simply put, Reach will automatically join up as soon as your friends are joinable.
Arena Playlists - Possibly the largest change coming in Halo: Reach is the Arena. This is a Slayer and Team Slayer set of playlists entirely geared toward the hardcore. If that wasn't enough, players will be rated and placed into skill divisions in month-long seasons.
The rating system is smart enough to realize that kills aren't the other determining factor behind skill. This is especially true for team games where assists play a huge roll. Similarly, players that have a greater kill/death ratio (had more kills than deaths) will rank higher than players that die as much as they kill.
Ranked and Social Combined - Since the hardcore will be in the Arena, Bungie doesn't want to further splinter the community. In Halo 3, Ranked and Social playlists served two different purposes. Ranked games were generally of a higher quality, while social games were more casual.
There's is more but Shack deserves this clickz.

UI screens always subject to change. But the background/color scheme is heads above Halo 2/3.

Active Roster sounds pretty damn cool. Sounds similar to the Friends Feature in BC2.

Veto system giving players more options is always good. Wish the numbers were hidden until the timer ran out.

About time.

Guessing Arena is our typical Team Slayer, Team Skirmish, et all gametypes? Excellent.

Overall, sounds promising. Hoping this potential fix to alt-accounts holds true.

Arena is just the name of the playlist that will be seasonal if Im reading it right, could be a group of hoppers or just one gametype, who knows.

Everything sounds good, except this part right here.....

What is means is that if you party up with 6 players and enter into a 4v4 playlist, it should split your party into 3v3 and add 2 pubbies.

If you join that playlist with a full 8 players, your game will be entirely your party. Not sure if you can then juggle teams after that.

Yeah but that's only if you bring in more people than you should. One unlucky bastard is always going to get split if you bring 5 people into a 4v4 playlist.

The article states that it's just slayer and teamslayer, I really hope that's a misprint.

I also wonder, can I enter that as a team, or will it be only for lone guys getting paired up.

Im really excited, however can see flaws with the system already. Trolls will delibratly choose 'polite' just to screw nice people! I like the idea and hope implimentation works out, but I will miss being put into matches with rowdy people, if it happens rarely, its actually quite funny.

Either way Exp/Credit based ranking system confirmed? Seems like the only element of ranked left is the monthly leaderboard thing?

From my talk with Bungie, it's only Slayer gametypes.

Speculation: They will add more gametypes as the game goes on. The infrastructure allows Bungie to set any playlist hopper to Arena.

Bungie has thought of this already. The social features will not be weighted in any way that is exploitable. They won't have another "everyone set your language to Portuguese" in Reach.

So let me make sure I understand. Say you've got 11 in your party, and you get into a 10v10 playlist. Halo 3 just slaps one guy on the other team and calls it good. So would Reach divide it up as 5v6 (party) + randoms to fill the teams?

This new info seems pretty great! The chattiness/motivation preferences looks a bit silly in the context of the picture, but I trust in Bungie. I am particularly excited for the queue system.

Until it is said from Bungie, I won't speculate too hard. That will be a massive disappointment. It would only show they are drifting further away from competitive, non-MLG variants for CTF, Bomb, KotH, Oddball, and other possibilities.

InvincibleAgent said:
Anyone else not excited for the options? I think most people will just keep voting for the same levels (ie Valhalla), and there will be less variety.
Hopefully there's more variety in maps and they use the expanded gametypes. Halo 3 was all about a certain about of maps and primarily CTF and Slayer. Not much variety at all.

For a Skirmish option, they could have, for instance:

1 CTF @ Lockout, Multi-CTF @ Sanctuary, 1 Bomb @ Terminal, None

Arena should be the death of new accounts, it sucks that it's only slayer though, when did Bungie become anti objective? :(

I hope this is just a miscommunication, if you get points for helping the team out more in objective gametypes, why go through the trouble of that if you're still only going to have slayer in Arena?

If that is what its for then no complaints from me.

If its like how it is in Halo 3.. where you bring 5 people in a 6v6 playlist, and you get 3 randoms.. the game splits you 4v4. [then no thank you]

Thanks Bleahy, that's actually fine with it being like that, as long as it's not hard capped as only slayer types.

Nice work on the article, and descriptions!

When the stinging drones got what they wanted by turning the objective players against those in charge, thereby crippling the balance of power and allowing a fellow drone who lacks all understanding of what is right to control society. The head drone obeys no man. He promotes the simplest of pleasures and destroys the proliferation of enlightened activity. This man is a tyrant.

This man is Shishka.

I'm curious to see how far I can stretch a metaphor before it breaks.

Random observations:

Slick UI evolution. Halo 3's is the best interface I've run into, this looks to build on it.

Veto options: thank you, Flying Spaghetti Monster. Thank you. My only requests: stop the veto countdown once an option has a majority (or plurality) and just load the match, and don't show the votes until the end.

Digging the concept around The Arena, and the subsequent intelligent selection of social vs. ranked play. The constant monthly refresh of Arena ranks sounds like something to discourage alt accounts; I'm curious what kind of carry-over there is from each monthly round.

The play style preferences are interesting, curious how they'll get used. You know people are going to select the quiet option and then blast speakers with noise.

New map name: Sword Base. The pic kinda reminds me of Colossus.

Credit system officially teased: "104Cr" at the bottom of one screen.

Active Roster and party up features are sick, and working that directly into the UI rather than the guide makes me happy in special places.

Lovely stuff. Is it May yet?

So uh, in that first screen up there, where it says Bungie on the map... Is this space reserved for the map author, perhaps?

First off thanks for the info, im very jealous about your chat with Bungie!

I meant more in terms of trolling, someone could quite easily set it up so that they get to play with polite people and scream abuse down the mic at them. I guess muting will be required a lot less often though :lol

Im glad to know Bungie are taking extra care with the system this time though.

I like that the veto system has been changed. I don't like that the same map can be repeated but with a different objective. It should all be different maps. Also, how about hiding the timer? In Halo 3 is people wait until the very last second to vote.

Sword base is a weird name for a map. development name maybe? It actually sounds like a callout more than a map name. (speculation alert!) Maybe sword base is a chunk out of a larger map being used for smaller games like PD:zero did (an effect that actually worked fairly well)

I was going to say it's just their logo, but it's not: it's the same font as the map and gametype. That would make sense: map and gametype together, author down in the corner. *gets excited*

Also, it's nice to have an article written by someone familiar with Halo. It's clear the author wasn't just regurgitating bullet points, but had a solid frame of reference for what was changing and why. I don't read a lot of games journalism because frankly half the time the people writing don't know what the fuck they're talking about. This was a well done piece.

That was a nice little bit of information from Shacknews. Still no gameplay details though. Hopefully this is a pre cursor to the bombshell of MP info Urk is going to drop on us in the update tomorrow. Im DYING to find out more about invasion mode. Everytime I play Rush in Bad Company 2 all I can think of how Epic that mode would be set in the Halo universe with Spartans vs. Elites.

Oh my god @ the new info. The beta cannot come soon enough. I already feel like this will be the only game I play for a long long time.
