Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

I really hope the Arena has objective. I honestly can't see how Bungie would ignore the fact that their hardcore player base enjoys objective games (see MLG playlist). This must be a miscommunication imo.

I was going to say it's just their logo, but it's not: it's the same font as the map and gametype. That would make sense: map and gametype together, author down in the corner. *gets excited*

Also, it's nice to have an article written by someone familiar with Halo. It's clear the author wasn't just regurgitating bullet points, but had a solid frame of reference for what was changing and why. I don't read a lot of games journalism because frankly half the time the people writing don't know what the fuck they're talking about. This was a well done piece.

You're good people.

So true, and right after I was bitching about the quality of Halo related jouranlism I get proven wrong.

Thank you, sir. This is why I am put on covering games like Halo, Call of Duty, Street Fighter, and StarCraft ;) Cause I play them... a lot.

About God damned time. That's about the only thing I'm good at in Halo 3, not dying.

Bless your heart!

Also, UI is fucking HOT. Holy shit. Also, if I understood this correctly, there's no persistent level or rank that I get? It's just how I do after each "season" Did I read that right?

Also! Players rank up individually now and not based on Teams' performance???

Really digging the new matchmaking interface screens. Looks slick. Glad they are improving what was already the best form of matchmaking out there. Kudos, Bungie.

Holy hell, I hope so. That would fix the biggest complaint I have when I play.

And it would help those I play with when I suck ass :)

Holy hell I hope not.

Matches will degrade into fighting over power ups and power weapons and camping.

I just read it again and it seems as though players will be rewarded extra for their better performance.

for example if my team wins, we all get exp to rank up, but if I do extremely well and carry, I get extra exp towards my rank. This is system I'm in favor of, not strictly individual based ranking like CoD. Fuuuuuuuck that.

I'm curious, and maybe I missed it in the article as I skimmed.

Halo 3's veto system is active after the original map is loaded. So if you vetoed that map, you would have to wait for a new map to be loaded.

Has that been changed in Halo Reach? Will the veto period be active before any map is loaded?

Wow... so great and beautiful looking. And bungie pretty much leaving everyone else in the dust when it comes to online features, again.

This new system seems to be similar to CoD though - In Halo 3 I would let my mate have Sniper if I know hes better than me and will get 1/2 more kills with it than I would. In Reach im gonna be a greedy bastard just to rank up myself.

I dont like it.

Bleahy, when can we expect the next batch of info? I want to stay here continously f5'ing but I have work to do :( - Really appreciate all the info!

Exactly, its a mix between Cod and the Halo we know and love. It works in CoD because of the classes. Unless the "load outs" from the trailer is a class system, which if you stop and think about the terminology sounds like it is (as in, picked before matches start (however in the trailer it was presented to be synonymous with the armor abilities)). I'm still on a wait and see basis but it sounds like going into matchmaking without a full party will be an even worse experience. We'll see though.

Also, Sword Base was shown in the trailer. The guy with the DMR lifts up to the guy on the bridge.

edit also: Max player 16...don't know if it was mentioned already

double edit: Layering matchmaking preferences. 1 screen has good connection AND language set.

Random observations:

Slick UI evolution. Halo 3's is the best interface I've run into, this looks to build on it.

Veto options: thank you, Flying Spaghetti Monster. Thank you. My only requests: stop the veto countdown once an option has a majority (or plurality) and just load the match, and don't show the votes until the end.

Digging the concept around The Arena, and the subsequent intelligent selection of social vs. ranked play. The constant monthly refresh of Arena ranks sounds like something to discourage alt accounts; I'm curious what kind of carry-over there is from each monthly round.

The play style preferences are interesting, curious how they'll get used. You know people are going to select the quiet option and then blast speakers with noise.

New map name: Sword Base. The pic kinda reminds me of Colossus.

Credit system officially teased: "104Cr" at the bottom of one screen.

Active Roster and party up features are sick, and working that directly into the UI rather than the guide makes me happy in special places.

Lovely stuff. Is it May yet?
Yeah, everything sounds great. I'm loving the extra criteria Bungie has decided to add (winning vs. having fun). Kinda unsure about a couple of things, though. Are there still specific playlists like one for objective only, one for slayer only, and one for slayer and objective?

CBO score + MM news makes today a very good day.:D

Everything sounds great so far. As for clan support, I'm not disappointed at all. I don't see that being useful and worthy of Bungie's attention. I prefer they work on new things such as Arena. My only concern is if playlist and Arena support is going to be any better than Halo 3 cuz H3's support left much to be desired. (No offense to Shishka, I just feel that way.)

Any word on Forge or the new assets?

Sword Base is a shitty name, btw. Hopefully a placeholder, ala Purple Reign and Moonbase Alpha.

There were only 3 maps in the H3 beta right? How many different gametypes were included? I wonder if we should expect the same for Reach.

That was a fantastic article. I'm LOVING all the features Bungie's adding for Reach, soooo goood. New ranking system sounds amazing. Players being rewarded for doing things other than standing back and sniping? w00t!

The scope of the talk was about Matchmaking, UI, and social features.

If the new matchmaking options really work, Reach might finally get me to stick around the game for the long haul. With past titles, it's been difficult to get my friends to play a few months after release, and I always end up playing with randoms and quitting the game entirely after a streak of bad community experiences. I've changed my account settings to communicate with friends only, but that isn't an optimal solution either since I miss out on any team communication whatsoever. The early info had me excited enough about the game, but the potential of these new options really has me sold.

That gif couldn't be anymore perfect.

Will the Active Roster have realtime updating? That's my one complaint with the current implementation in Halo 3. You have to keep exiting out and going back to it to see updates of the game.

Well, I disagree. It is really hard for me to level up when playing with randoms, even when I am doing damn good. You are basically describing a team rank and not an individual rank, which is fine if you play with the same team all the time. Perhaps they will have a two tiered set of rewards. Credits and exp. Everyone gets credits and the winning team gets exp. As long as I get something for going 16 and 5 and still losing in a team slayer match.

I would imagine they are going to push notifications to all those who are "interested" at certain intervals.

Seriusly though, these updates are really appreciated. Cant wait for the final write up.

As far as objective goes, Dopey was spot on. Hopefully they arnt just abandoning objective with Reach.

As far as the team based nature of Halo vs the solo nature of CoD goes, Halo 3 is an amazing experiance when you play with friends and people work as a team, CoD just hasnt ever provided me with that. Jagged I agree there needs to be a reward for doing well even when you lose but I hope this doesnt come at the cost of playing as a team. I mean if going to rank up more if I whore rockets, camp and get a good spread while my team struggles, thats just going to be a negative.

I'll drop a preview quote on you fools!

Lars Bakken: (on Active Roster) "It has all the information what all your friends are doing, whether they're partied up or not, who they're partied up with, what gametype they're in whether they're searching in matchmaking [or in a lobby]. That is fed to you, realtime, in the menu at all times. It's always there."

Edit: ah calls not real time, ignore this :lol - was going to ask if you could ask about the ranking system, forget it :p

I fully understand not wanting to be punished because you had assholes team killing and doing stupid shit in a match. However, I feel as though the best solution (because you can't stop all the assholes in the world) would be a mix of the two. If your team loses because you had a guy on your team jumping off the map every time he spawned while you were out there busting your ass and going way positive, I believe that you should lose exp for the loss but that the amount should be effected by your individual performance. (Losing exp less than the normal amount) While on the other hand the shitty teammates you had would lose the normal amount of exp in addition to the exp lost because of their terrible performance. I think if you fully open it up to have ranks based exclusively on individual performance you'll see a totally different problem open up where players are playing just for K/D.

BUT. I don't think that'll happen. If ranks are indeed based on individual performance, I don't see Bungie making them based on just k/d. It looks like things like assists and some other stuff will be taken into account as well. What other things though? Shots hit percentage? Kills with weaker standard weapons rather than power weapons? Kills with normal shields vs kills with camo or overshield? Multikills? What about objective gametypes? Ball time, hill time, flag stolen and flags capped?
