Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

I would say it's a typical cutscene, with improved models, lighting, textures, etc. Remember they "premiered Halo 3 gameplay" with a CG.

I would prefer a more epic trailer, but doesn't matter. I look forward for this game.

That .25 will be way more evolution than the majority of FPS's achieve during multiple generations when it comes to gameplay. Therefore, I don't give shit if the game looks bad, it will still be my favorite game.
It is just that people forget so easily. It is freaking annoying to see how little it takes to convince you guys after the previous dissapointment.
The video clearly confirms a huge evolution in terms of gameplay

The avatar on GAF shows up as 90 x 120.. and I increased the brightness and colors of that scene.. since the original was hard to see at that resolution.
Well the compression looks like shit. It's making Halo Reach look like shit, you asshole.

Aww, reminds me of the KZ thread. 4 MB gifs. 4 MB of game-boner inducing giffage.

uhg ... Im sure that hurts you beyond belief.

At 120x90 it look perfectly alright. More so than your shitty avatar.

For a Halo/Bungie game, that's one hellava understatement.

So what you're saying they did look especially great for a Halo game?
I'll give it that, easily the best looking Halo game, and the graphics are nice. When I say they didn't look especially great I mean to say that the graphics weren't beautiful enough to make up for the very boring teaser.

I wasn't expecting an action packed trailer, and I did expect it would be a bunch of Spartans prepping to go to war. I was just hoping that while the Spartans were prepping we'd get a couple of little easter eggs to get the fans speculating (maybe a glimpse at some new weapons or vehicles, some talk of new abilities, anything really that would suggest something new gameplay wise). I know we got the 'no more lone wolf' line but everyone already new you'd be fighting alongside other Spartans this time!
Also when they were lying off into the distance and the camera panned back I was fully expecting the camera to reveal an epic battle in progress which would have really pumped me up! Instead we got a nice sky box and a bit of lightening/electric shit in the air. Just felt very anti-climatic to me :(

Hey freeloaders and internet smegheads, if you haven't noticed by now, in the TOS (you know the document we ask you to read when you register) it clearly states the max avatar size is 90x120x150kb.

Avatars over the limit may lead to a ban, or permanently gimped avatar privileges.

Just saying.

I got bored. Here's some potential avatars if anyone wants to use them.

Edit: Taking these down one by one when someone claims one.

Holy shit trasher, you did not go to sleep tonight did you?

I can finally re-enter the thread again!

I liked the trailer in parts, but its obvious elements of the game aren't going to resemble this trailer at all. For a start the entire thing is completely anti-aliased. They did that with the Halo 3 'cinematic', and thats the give away that it wont be this clean in-game.

I like the muted colour palette, sets it apart and the Halo series was getting a bit ridiculous with the 'coloured plastics', which would've held the series visual evolution back (Ninja Gaiden's character models for instance, forever doomed to lack texture detail on skin). Hoping they dont have an artistic change of heart like with Halo 3 and changed this hardened-metal armour turn back into chintzy looking action figure green again.

Obviously no in-game footage shown at all, so impossible to judge the animations. The cutscene ones weren't exactly exceptional, so I expect that to be the games main failing once again.

Ultimately I am interested again, if the in-game stuff doesn't look massively different and worse than this cinematic, then I'll be on-board. I thought they could have covered a lot more of this area in more interesting smoke effects though with things lifting off and an early windy morning. The generic smoke that was there sort of made the whole 'lifting off' affair feel boring rather than epic.

Painted Skull-head spartan looked awesome though. Dialogue was kinda cheesey but oh well, so is 99% of all other videogames so won't hold that against it :lol Interested to see how the beta is going to look. Hoping its going to look close to the final calibur or Bungie is going to catch super-shit for pulling the same shenanigans three times in a row.

I think it's a little unfair comparing this to the Halo 3 cinematic that turned out to be way beyond anything in Halo 3. At that point Halo 3 was about 2 years (I can't remember exactly) or more away, Halo:Reach is a year away and in playable form already, so the situation is a lot different.

Having said that, gameplay will definately look different. I'd just be happy with less jaggies in the end.

trailer looked rather great, but mostly, due to reasons that can't be replicated ingame.
Graphics are nice in motion but screengrabs show some poor geometry in places.
Basically, this trailer says very little about how the game will look, but i like the style

Had chance to see it in HD this morning, after getting some sleep. I'm more impressed now, but I'm still worried by a few of the non-graphical aspects.

Good:
  • Draw distance
  • Human faces
  • New aircraft
  • Image quality - yes even given it's a cutscene

Bad:
  • Dialogue
  • Music - literally the first time I've not been wowed by a Marty track

Ugly:
  • DemoMan.png
    - Seriously, this character is worst thing I've ever seen in a Halo game.

oh man what is wrong with you!

That guy looks like a crazy motherfucker. And on top of that, its pretty realistic for him to carry that much ammo, especially if he is heading somewhere where there are only covenant.

On a side note i hope this means in the introduction of a grenade launcher :D

Good point. There is no excuse for the smoke and dust effects to be the way they were in a cut scene. It's just lazy and very last generation.

I don't care if we lose the fancy post-processing effects and perfect self-shadowing and some of the texture quality and yadda yadda, just please, please, please retain something approaching this cutscene's clarity and crispness in real gameplay. ANTI-ALIASING. PLEASE. LOVE OF GOD. FLIP THE SWITCH.

The scene that particularly looked boring was the warthog griving across the landscape. No wind, no dust, no mud, no nothing. Just a car driving over a textured geometry landscape. So yes, Bungie excels with their lighting engine but forgets absolutely everything else that can make cutscenes and skirmishes look energetic and 'messy'.

No, that guy looks like a twat. I'd expect that kind of character design in something brain-dead like Army of Two, but it's worrying that someone in Bungie thought it worked. Looks like the kind of thing someone in marketing would suggest to target the moron demographic. And I don't care about the ammo. Just that stupid helmet.[/bile]

EDIT: That said, I'm impressed with the female spartan. They managed to toe a fine line between making her obviously a woman, yet without going all "The Babysitter" on us and giving her long flowing locks.

This is the same company that came up with Gravemind, a large cabbage like entity with tenticles that controls the hive mind of the flood in some basement.

Uhh, I don't really think they were going for a energetic and messy tone, dude. Yeah, I don't think this was a very good scene to pick for a reveal and they should have had more action and more new shit to spill over. But this is a scene from the game, a scene that could be very appropriately set up with the context of everything else. Choosing an actual scene without spoilers or certain things they didn't want to reveal yet was probably pretty challenging.

You misunderstand. Messy doesn't mean "battle" it means making the objects and vehicles part of the environment. The tyres on a Warthog would be kicking up serious mud and dust driving across that landscape and the helicopter vehicles would also be driving a lot of wind and dust up off of the ground, that is what they do (theres a little in both instances, but its last gen smoke effects ). Instead what you get is sterile vehicle segments that are simply a 3d model moving over geometry with smoke dispensors, nothing connecting it to that scene of landscape (leaving tracks in terrain like Motorstorm would look ace for instance).

I agree with you on the point you made about the new testosterone filled character. The guy really doesn't fit in with Bungie's general aesthetic sense. Most of their characters give off a somewhat mature feeling, never going too crazy in terms of build or outlandish or unpleasing features. The Brutes looked retarded in Halo 2 but were quickly polished up for Halo 3. The Elites are a milestone design in alien aesthetics in my opinion. Very cool looking, very sleek armour. Master Chief, although descendent of a dirt biker, has awesome proportions to his mjolnir.

Gravemind though. You're a crazy motherfucker and don't you forget it.

Hurm. Hurm.
I'm not actually sure how I feel.
It looks great, and I scoff at those who say otherwise.
But what're they trying to say with this trailer. The Brute skull on that the EVA helmet.. weird. Urk says it's not paint on. It's the opening of the game, which was a weird trailer choice anyway (but it may be an attempt to address previous reveal trailers graphical back-lash).
Hurm.

The dialogue quality is masked by "good" voice acting, I'm really hoping for an improvement in the dialogue and narrative over H3. And yes, I'll keep saying this until I see this in practice.

Not ingame (AA wont be the same, maybe some special effect) but its like Halo 2. Cutscenes were much better looking (IQ, some effects like fur...) but its not CG.

I think the idea of his visor being all scratched up like that is pretty sweet. Maybe once we get to know him a little more it won't seem so overdone? I do think they went a bit overboard on all those grenade rounds though. Kinda looks a bit ridiculous.

By the way, I have come to a few conclusions of what we can probably expect at the start of the game, which I am assuming follows shortly after this cinematic. I went back and watched the first trailer, well more like listened, and figured a couple things out after now seeing the new trailer.

So here is what we
might
know:
After watching the newest trailer we have now been introduced to Noble Team. It is made up of 6 Spartans, and one of which appears to be the player's character (the Lone Wolf). Then there is the commander named Carter, Kat the female Spartan, Jorge, and two other Spartans that we don't have names for yet. At the end of the trailer the Spartans board two flying vehicles that we have never seen before. One of these vehicles is shown containing the Lone Wolf Spartan, Carter, and the sniper Spartan that we don't have a name for yet. It is probably safe to assume that the other three (Kat, Jorge, and the demolition man) are on the second aircraft. Right as both of these new birds take off we hear Kat say "Noble 2 is airborne and set for combat insertion." It is also worth it to mention that this same line is said during the E3 trailer, and kind of ties the two trailers together in a way.

This is where opinions may differ. I am starting to wonder if Noble 2 is what Kat is calling the aircraft she and the other two Spartans are on, OR the call-sign could refer to the second half of Noble Team since they are currently split up. Or the term "Noble 2" could even refer to Kat herself if she is second in command to Carter who would obviously be called "Noble 1." Either way, we know that the Spartan team is divided into these two groups.

So during the E3 trailer we know that communication is lost with what someone calls "Noble 1." Even if Noble 1 doesn't refer to the ship that Carter, Lone Wolf, and the sniper Spartan are on, we can safely assume that it at least refers to Carter or his half of Noble Team. We can then infer that Carter's aircraft ends up crashing by the lines that are said in the E3 trailer: "We're coming in hot." "We just lost our bird." It even sounds like the same voice we hear from Carter in the new trailer.

Going from all of this information I am guessing that the first mission will start after you, Carter, and the sniper Spartan crash onto the surface of Reach and are then separated from the other half of your team. From the E3 trailer we know that Carter says, "This is Sierra 2-5-9. You got Spartans on the ground, sir. We're not going anywhere." So obviously you survive this crash landing, and are now left on the surface of Reach to complete whatever mission it is that you are sent to do. It also sounds like only the one aircraft is shot down. So maybe the other half of the team will have to come rescue you at some point.

Anyways, this is what I have come to gather after watching both trailers again. Maybe I'm wrong and you fly straight for that Covenant ship we see in the sky at the end of the trailer. That would be a kickass mission for sure.
