So awesome. I was still never able to score the Halo Legends poster of this one :(

So now there is absolutely no way to instant kill someone with a shotgun? You have to first pop shields, then kill them? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that make the AR a better close range weapon than the Shotgun, as you'll get4 shields down really fast and then not have to wait before shooting again?

Gametype settings? Elite health characteristics? I believe the Game Informer article said the shotgun now has a bit tighter spread/more damage per pellet and likened it to other typical loadout weapons.

I'm hoping the quote was only referring to bullet weapons. Imagine not getting an insta-kill with a rocket, grenade, sword, flag, etc

You think a lock on rocket launcher would be bad but the laser is fine...
Just cause I like dumb-firing the rocket. Love leading targets in CE and 3, hated how it got noobified in 2. Manually targeting vehicles puts hair on your chest.

Besides, doesn't look like they're budging on the Laser, so do we need even more A/V weapons?

EMP:
Plasma Pistol
Grenade Launcher
Armor Lock

Boom:
Grenade Launcher (We don't quite know about damage)
Rocket Launcher
Plasma Launcher
Spartan Laser
Frag/Plasma Grenades

Nah, man. :lol

Edit: I wonder if the Focus Rifle's humongous beam is any good against vehicles?

Aye, and longer range as a result. Not being able to one-shot someone with the shotty is going to change the gameplay a bit, especially combined with the shorter mêlée lunge. You'll have to be point blank and land a mêlée right after.

The shield pop delimiter probably also informed the decision to make the DMR single-shot instead of burst fire as with the BR. With the latter, one of the bullets could pop the shield, and another bullet land the headshot, so you would be able to do both in a single trigger pull. Now it's two discrete shots.

Definately only applies to projectile weapons, though. We've seen plenty of people get blown up with rockets, etc.

It's going to change it for the better, especially close range combat, I think.

The extent of the shield/health separation and what weapons impact it, as well as the role of the laser in MP, would be a great topic of clarification in the Update, Urk.

I don't know, that shotgun doesn't seem close enough to kill the person.

That was my initial thought also. In Halo 3, at that range, you wouldn't be killing the other dude from that distance. Seems fairly similar actually.

Oh, I agree about the rocket. I'd rather have to anticipate and lead the target to land a rocket but if a lock-on rocket means they can put air vehicles on maps without throwing a laser on the map I'm all for it. A lock-on rocket is more balanced than the laser.

Yeah, he was too far away for a one shot kill there.

And the speculation on rocket lock-on being back is worrying.. please don't be true. :/ One of the greatest Halo satisfactory feelings to me is nailing a moving vehicle by calculating the perfect rocket shot.

I hope Bungie starts talking about the improved netcode they're using for Halo: Reach. I know it's a stretch for them to discuss something like that in detail, but they did that exact thing for Halo 3 in February 2008 when they had Luke Timmins on the Bungie podcast.

He went into great detail about how the netcode changed and improved from Halo 2 to Halo 3 so I hope he comes on the latest podcast to do the same.

How? You have to 'charge' both (the lock-on on the RL takes time), they both destroy vehicles (except tanks) in a single shot, and they're both versatile enough to be used on infantry as well.

You're basically exchanging a lock-on for a zoom. I'd take the zoom, as it still takes a modicum of skill to use. Vehicles were more of a deathtrap in Halo 2 than they were in Halo 3 IMO, possibly more-so the weapon respawn system actually improved so that the first team to rush the power-weapon wasnt guaranteed it for the rest of the round.

I'd think if the sword is still one shot kill then the shotgun has to be. Since the shotty is basically the counter-sword amirite? So yea, I'd say he needs to be closer. Hugshot = win.

And for flying vehicles, it would most likely take 2 rockets, giving the pilot time to find the target, unlike the laser that is a one-hit kill

I'm thinking the same thing.

One thing really bothers me about this. It happens in...pretty much every game that I know of. When two things are see-through to some degree, it always fucks things up if they pass in front of eachother. It looks like that's happening here. There's some shield effect that scales out from the Elite when its shields go down, then scales back in. And while it's coming back in to fit the Elite, the sword completely disappears while that effect is passing by.

It's not a big deal at all, but that would look terrible in screenshots.

Damn bungie, why did you have to do this. Now no matter how awesome Reach may be, I will be disappointed because it doesn't have chess.

Netcode has always fascinated me, even though the technical specifics are way over my head. I'd love to hear the things they have changed or tweaked, especially if the player count has increased.

I have wondered, if the max player count has increased, then the code and the flow of information must have been refined so that the same broadband pipe can accommodate more unique contacts (players) or is the broadband pipe for the average player, do they assume that people's connections have gotten better so the connection requirements increase?

Also, would this mean that games with fewer players would benefit?

One thing specifically that I find interesting is the latency compensation and how the system makes games flow smoothly in real-time over a network with a variety of latencies involved.

Like I said, I'm no technical expert or anything but some of the explanations, particularly for modern games, is really astonishing stuff.

Eh, I'm indifferent to rocket locks. They make the weapon more viable on vehicle based maps, but if the move speed is similar to Halo 3's they won't be much more effective on the very largest of maps. A map like Sandtrap needs a quickly travelling projectile to have a chance of engaging vehicles at the longer distances. The laser does this well. But on an only moderately large map, like Valhalla, a lock-on weapon delivering a high payload gives vehicles an expanded role. Ultimately, the anti-vehicle weaponry on a map is only part of the puzzle though. For instance, a map like Standoff has a lot of cover a Warthog can use to evade a slow tracking projectile. It's therefore a balance between the vehicles, their counters, and the geometry.

Yeah a janky version of chess is definitely going to be sorely missed.
I really was hoping for the chance to play chess while being called a 'faggot' by a twelve year old on live. Leave chess to mobile phones and flash games where they belong.

I think I just blew my own mind...

We haven't described our evolution of the Double EXP weekend, but rest assured, it's evolving in step with Player Investment in Reach. This post, btw, is not an April Fool's joke.

Yeah, on a map as large as Sandtrap a lock-on rocket traveling at Halo 3 rocket speed wouldn't be able to take out a vehicle from the other side of the map unless the driver was careless but then again the vehicle wouldn't even be posing a threat when its beyond this range. Only poorly balanced vehicles like the tank and guass hog (which can snipe across the map) need to be countered by a weapon as ridiculous as the laser.

I miss the days when you could snipe the driver out of a Scorpion with a single bullet. LOL rollcage.

I just saw a blog post bitching about how Bungie wasn't answering a forum thread about this same topic.

http://www.gamesradar.com/f/bungie-ignoring-fans-over-halo-reach-issue/a-2010040115471846048

I don't really see the big deal. Never had trouble with Halo 2 or 3, but that might be because I live in the continental US :)

EDIT: And I could care less about custom game browsing.
Holy shit that was a stupid-ass post. BUNGIE IS IGNORING FANS QUESTIONS. God dammit, they are making a GAME, you know. They don't have infinite time to answer questions. It's not like this is some unprecedented event of people asking things in the forums and not immediately getting answers. Hell, Gamesradar must be in a slow news cycle to post garbage yellow e-journalism like that.

And @ Easy: Fuck the gauss hog. It is a tool for greifers. Hopefully the covenant all blowed up the Gauss Hog Garage with their first orbital bombardment so there is no way on Reach that we'll get the sniper on wheels.

Double cR weekends confirmed.

Would be interesting if they had a high tier armor or special armor for double xp weekend that you can earn credits that only go towards unlocking that special armor.

Like a separate tier of cR to earn? Could be interesting.

Honestly what interests me is what Bungie could do to keep the earning of credits interesting say a year after launch. What happens when it becomes trivial to get all the armor unlocks? Come out with new crazy expensive armor as DLC or something?

What about Overtime? It pays time-and-a-half. Seems much more feasible under current economic conditions.

Yeah a separate tier, so people couldn't just play double xp constant the whole weekend to unlock tons of pieces. Just put one pretty awesome exclusive piece to double xp weekends that you work towards.

One huge difference, you can dodge a locked-on rocket but you can't dodge a laser.

You don't like a that because it is a Sniper on wheels, but you're cool with a "anti-vehicle" weapon that acts like a Sniper on many maps? The Gauss is limited, or even sparingly used, anyways. It was used often in Halo 2 because it, combined with lock-on Rockets, balanced each other out. Bungie made Halo 2's chaingun quite weak.
