You don't like a that because it is a Sniper on wheels, but you're cool with a "anti-vehicle" weapon that acts like a Sniper on many maps? The Gauss is limited, or even sparingly used, anyways. It was used often in Halo 2 because it, combined with lock-on Rockets, balanced each other out. Bungie made Halo 2's chaingun quite weak.
Man, I'll champion a Spartan Laser because I believe it has balance. The Gauss Hog has infinite ammunition that can fire at a quick cadence with no charge time or visual cue of when it will next fire. Additionally, it is on wheels as I previously stated and it is part of a vehicle, making it much harder to kill because of the inherent armour of the Warthog and the ability to escape across a map much, much quicker.

Hell, Gauss beats Laser most times because it doesn't have to charge. If you think the Laser is imbalanced, Gauss must be the goddamned Scarab Gun.

One thing about the splaser, the rest of the sandbox is evolving around it in a way that looks to minimize it's effectiveness. Having reliable mid-long range weapons will make contesting or supressing the laser guy much easier than it was in H3.

My worry with all these anti vehicle tools is that somehow vehicles are going to be beefed up since there are about a hundred ways to counter them but what if you spawn withouut a counter ten you are fucked?

One huge difference, you can dodge a locked-on rocket but you can't dodge a laser.

Dont you technically have all of the laser's charge time to take the laser out (gunner, or getting your infantry teammates to target him), or get out of dodge (structures in sandtrap, or the differences in elevation in Valhalla)?

I agree the Spartan Laser is overpowered. Not as much as others, I think a larger charge time or a lower clip would be fine, I just hate lock-on weapons. I think any kill you get, you should have to have the reticule over the target at the time you fire (and very near the time the projectile hits).

I wish Bungie would chime in on what they meant with that "Plasma Repeater not breaking campaign" talk.

IS THE PLASMA REPEATER GOING TO BE IN CAMPAIGN?

ARE THERE GOING TO BE DIFFERENT WEAPONS IN CAMPAIGN AND MULTIPLAYER?

No one stands on the top of a mountain charging the laser for world to see. They run around with the laser constantly charging it so whenever a vehicle pops up they'll blow it away instantly. Either that or they'll sit around a corner or behind some cover, charge it, and jump out just before it blows. The laser instantly travels from gun to target with a laughably large radius that eliminates the need for aiming. Any weapon that fired slower moving projectiles wouldn't compare to Halo 3's laser; lock-on or otherwise.

I think the point was that a Plasma Repeater would be overly powerful as the standard weapon in campaign (similar to the WHO GAVE THE FLOOD ROCKETS frustration), so the Plasma Rifle will be standard for Elites in Campaign. However, it's a pansy little baby rifle compared to the Deemer, so Bungie is giving the Plasma Repeater an expanded role in Multiplayer for cross-Sandbox balance reasons.

Basically, it's more fun to fight with a plasma repeater but more fun to fight against a plasma rifle.

Also, IF YOU CAN DODGE A LASER, YOU CAN DODGE A ROCKET.

IF YOU CAN DODGE A WARTHOG, YOU CAN DODGE A BALL.

I think they said that the Plasma Repeater is Multiplayer only (or both), while the Plasma Rifle replaces it in Campaign. Kinda does away with their whole "what you can use in campaign you can use in multiplayer" phrase. :/

C'mon guys, let's not start using the Splaser as an excuse to why every other shitty thing must also be included on Halo Reach. :)

No one has mentioned anything about the AR yet.

No. It's awesome. Not very flexible but amazingly easy to use.

PROTIP: It can deal with AVI, WMVs and almost nothing else.

Yup. It's what I was using back in the day. Even has a setting specifically for 360 capture.

Good to know. Don't really need a social life at this age, anyway. :lol

True. Of course, the Laser paints a giant target on the back of whoever is using it. That's one of the reason I liked it, actually, particularly in large-scale objective-based games. In order to counter it, you had to communicate and coordinate, in the same way you've always had to with vehicles.

'Banshee's up', 'they're rolling their warthogs', were joined by 'who's got laser?'. If they had it, you identified him, converged on his position and fought for it. If the other team wanted to keep the laser, they had to coordinate - provide support fire and cover, which really never happened outside of clan matches in Halo: CE or Halo 2 (in my experience). Taking map design into account though, I felt a lot more vulnerable in vehicles in Halo 2 than I do in Halo 3. I've seen and earned too many running riots in hogs to feel as though they're victimized by the laser.

Man, that AR really does look like its doing laughably minor damage. Its like the spiritual successor to the Halo 2 needler....without the option for dual-wielding.

I was actually downloading it to my new laptop right now. I'm no good with editing videos anyways so I figure it won't matter what the program is. Example (which I may have to update now that Luke killed Flight)

S'wat I used to make my map videos back in the day. You can't do anything super fancy, but it's pretty intuitive.

Wow... GAF love for Widows Movie Maker, I love it.

I use Windows Movie Maker for all of my videos (Tricking/Glitching/Montages). While I will say it has its occasional hiccups I believe the same can be said for any movie editing program (amirite bladed).

I was honestly expecting a backlash for suggesting WMM :lol

WMM is awesome. It's like the MS Paint of movie editing. And everybody loves MS Paint.

Unrelated: My facebook was advertising GUNNAR Gaming Eyewear. I thought of Shishka.

Wish I had a capture card I opted to drop $10 on rendering points as opposed to paying hundreds of dollars for a capture card I probably wouldn't use too often. Now to see if I can get my choptag out before Bladed finishes the GAFtag and overshadows me.

The one good thing about the laser is that it is easy to spot. The bad thing is that if you're going against a good team there's not much you can do to get it back if they don't want you to.

As for the AR in that gif, you can see by looking at his ammo count that he hasn't shat that many bullets out yet so the fact that he's able to beat the other player down (and destroy their shield?) after only emptying 1/3 of his clip means the AR is definitely still a spray + beatdown beast. Hopefully getting a beatdown will be harder this time around.

Can someone gif Luke at 0:24? Lol

Just to point out. You only see emblems and names appearing over 16 players heads.
I think he starts laughing at 0:26, when he says "inventing fun." there seems to be a little hiccup there, like choking back laughter. It also cuts away from his face then.

Yeam, but the emblems are a variety of different objective symbols. I don't know what invasion is, but I doubt there is any gametype that would put up that many objectives.

True, if you have two good, evenly matched teams that actually coordinate (a rare occurrence in Halo, or any mainstream shooter actually), then the laser becomes a game-changer and often the focus of the entire match. Usually the guys I played with and I would use diversionary tactics, draw their attention with a mongoose and infantry attack, to give the Warthog and Banshee an opening to flank around.

I honestly think if they brought the shots down to 3, made the laser finer (more precise, less splash) and maybe boosted the charge time, the weapon would be perfect. Im biased though, its my favorite power weapon in terms of concept and aesthetic design. And really satisfying to use compared to the missile pod.

Good point. The shields would have been dropped by the melee, the guy would have survived to keep fighting.

I dont know what you would do at close range with no shields though...you know the other guy still has his shields, so a melee wouldnt bring him down, and it would take a lot longer for you to take down his shields and finish him off with gunfire than it would for him to finish your shield-less ass off with one or two shots....

Well, we know that you now have to completely take out someone's shields before you can start taking down the health bar, right? Even if someone was to start spraying and then melee'd - unless your shields are completely gone - it wouldn't just kill you ala Halo 3. I think this will help curve the general frustration with the AR, and to me, it seems like it's going to take a considerable more amount of skill to pull off kills with the AR now.

WTF? Did they gimp it?

I thought so, but some posters here are making a good case for why its not nerfed, it just requires more skill to use. The AR/melee combo needed to be toned down. The AR still seems to be doing good DPS, but unless shields are completely broken, the melee wont kill anymore. So it will take more skill to use, but should still make for an effective close range weapon.

Against the pistol though....we'll see what happens.

NVM, I just saw the HQ video, and that scene happens incredibly fast, it makes sense the AR would make just that little damage.

Wow, have to say I was surprised at the awesome vidoc. An april fools joke and new reach footage all in one? Amazing. :lol

But seriously, that new footage looks really nice. I love the look of the elites up close.. And some of the dying physics look so nice. Its nice to see more ragdoll less flailing arms. And some of those environments look really fun.

I need a new avatar either from the new pics or this vidoc. If anyone could help me with that I would love them forever.

Oh, also, has anyone made a separate thread for Wednesdays news and the new footage? Just curious if there were other discussions going on to follow.

A few months ago, in a spin-off news thread for a different game (don't recall which) someome made a comment to the effect of, "shit's old, check the mega thread". To which Evilore replied, that kind of stuff needs to stop, it's bad for the forum. News threads for significant news should be made, despite the presence of a mega thread.

The one I made last week about the player investment stuff got locked because this thread exists. I'm guessing any such threads before the Beta thread that m0dus and I are working on will suffer the same fate.

So I have no idea what the policy is.

Edit: it was an Olympics topic, actually, but I would think it applies here.

Ah ok, I didnt stick with that one to see it get locked. Well, I suppose that makes it more than slightly confusing on what to do, but best play it safe. Besides, this thread is more fun when it all happens in here.

I imagine BWUs don't count as big news, and only a few Vidocs as well.

New trailers are big, like the Multiplayer reveal and eventually the Campaign reveal.

Then of course there are the two huge ones, the Beta Thread, the Official Reach Thread, and the possible Reach campaign thread.

Well they seem to be doing one new reveal each week, so I suppose the next one will be in the coming weeks about the beta maps or something.

I'm guessing today's was the real deal for now, but that we'll have another before the Beta hits. I thought this week was pretty meaty in terms of new stuff, including the video. Stuff's definitely ramping up. Next week is beta map week too, so shit's really going to get real.
