Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

The gold thing looks much worse in the previous beta footage... And the other thing (weapon holder?) is completely gone...

The framing of this shot is interesting. It's as if they wanted to make sure all five of the stations with the big lever and a screen were in the frame:

http://www.bungie.net/images/Games/Reach/images/screenshots/090410/Reach_MPBeta_Powerhouse02.jpg

The room is wide open - no real cover, no weapons on display. I'm wondering of the levers actually work, and if so, what they'd do.
They all have cables leading to the genrator thingy in the middle, which looks to be providing power to something on the roof?

MAC uplink control confirmed?

That was some nice Jurky, Urk!:D The most interesting bits were the section about the textures and how the warning is implemented when you go beyond the barrier.

Certainly is. I'm hoping to get some games tonight. Won't be up late though.

On a side note, Montage is pretty much done so I'll be looking for somewhere to host it (for downlaod and/or for streaming). Any suggestions?
I'll probably stick it on Youtube too but its just over 16 minutes long, not sure they'll let me do it without splitting it in two.

dammit guys it's fun to explore in Halo campaigns but barriers are there for a reason. "BUT ITZ MOAR FUN TO BREAK TEH LEVELS" isn't a good reason not to control what the player sees or does. The campaign is created to give a general experience with specific direction and plot points. If you can break out of it and walk around, the designer has failed to deliver those points. I'm not saying that they should put a soft ceiling on everything, far from it. But there will be barriers of the kill and invisible variety and you should start accepting it now. Ultimately, the Halo games are always Sandbox-y enough to allow escapades, but the maps are not built to allow it.

Ive never understood the facination with exploring outside the boundrys considering most of the time it sucks out there - but I also dont see the problem with people doing this? It probably adds hours of fun to the game for certain people, and what does it hurt Bungie?

P.S. Im really looking forward to it Bladed!

There won't be barriers of the "kill variety", in campaign. It sets up a scenario that is worse than the player is actually breaking or getting out of the level.

As soon as a player sees a vista or piece of scenery that catches there eye and they go to explore it and then all of a sudden they get a warning on screen stating that they are leaving the battlefield is something that completely takes the player out of that world and reminds them they are playing a video game. It ends up breaking the story rather than letting the player explore. They work for MP but not for SP and that is why they will not be there. It really makes no sense to have them in SP.

OOH theres a countdown to when the Oxbox servers go down on Major Nelsons blog now, this will definatly help us plan for when to get into the final game.

Xbox Live on original Xbox ends:
4 days, 17 hours, 28 minutes, 12 seconds

Thats roughly 9:30 am for me - im planning to wake up early and play.
thanks, that's going to help a lot for timing getting into the final game :D

No problem with the heads up about timings. Now anyone care to team up with me? Im planning to be on most of Wednesday to play against Bungie, sleep and then wake up half n hour before shut off time and carry on playing. A team to to play with would be awesome. I may already have 1 person but I doubt any of my friends will actually be that up for it, help me Neogaf!

Wow are those pics of the new maps so disappointing. Why can't bungie figure out that they are missing a step in level production - the clutter/polish part. There's not a single crack or piece of mud on the floor - it's just one giant uninteresting tiling texture. Not a single mark on the wall or in a corner...not single thing found on the table or on the floor - like the maps were professionally cleaned before you arrived. It doesn't match the context of the game and it doesn't fit the tone of multiplayer either. Simply put - it looks like proof of concept, not what would actually be acceptable to release.
You look at the major differences in graphics between last gen and current gen and it's mostly due to resolution and the revelations in the clutter/polish pass. Why does Gears of War look so much better than Epic's previous outings? - A butt load of alpha decals on every surface. Attention to detail, too. There's not a plain tiling texture without something to help break it up to be found in the entire game. The same goes for all the big hitters this gen, gears is just one example.

1998 is over, bungie. You gotta step your shit up. Might as well make outdoor maps with no grass alphas. Paint the ground with 1 green and brown 512 and call it a day.

I can maybe possibly understand the lack of polish in order to reach 60fps, but that's not the case is it? But it appears to me that (once again) bungie is sacrificing polish for nothing. Games like Dead Rising have the same lack of polish, but dead rising had an obvious reason for that. Dead rising also came out a long time ago (in video game years) and to be fair to bungie so did halo 3...what is bungie's excuse today?

Why would an ONI building have mud on the floor? wat

Ghost Town has a lot of "clutter" and it's one of the worst maps to play on because of it. Oh look there's a random chain link fence laying down in this building, *throws grenade and watches it come back to my face*...awesome.

Joke post?

Its Pre-Alpha...

I for one hope that there ISNT too much clutter, shit on the map just gets in the way of the combat.

Haha, yup. Update hit all the right spots:
- Invisible barriers around the map reduced in favor of a death countdown. Nother concern though, I hope it's not in campaign, I'd rather them have ridiculous invisible walls that people can glitch out off than have a mechanic that'll insure no one can explore the outside of maps.
- Invisible surfaces to smooth out the playing field... :D
- Went in depth description of both the needler and needle rifle (need to find a quick nickname for this one BTW GAF)

They mentioned the grenades were more powerful but less plentiful. I'm concerned that it won't to be the case because most of the loadouts on the loadout screen showed 2 grenades at start and the maps have a similar grenade count as the Halo 3 maps. Would be cool if one of the custom gametype settings changed grenade damage seperat from the rest of the damage. Actually, it'd be neat if they could do something like that with all the elements of the sandbox (vehicle damage, AR damage, etc.).

Didn't even see that until you pointed it out. Next week should be interesting.
Nerfle for sure.

Seems like a generator of some kind. Very odd that any of that would be sitting in the a water feature inside a building.

Yup. If there's one thing everybody wants in Halo multiplayer, it's more clutter. Rooms filled with chairs and tables and teacups to knock over and get caught up on. Would be sweet!

;)

Jokes aside, our environment artists and 3D teams are putting a lot of love into all the fine details and we're a long ways from ship (ever wonder why developers are leery about putting unfinished/early media out these days?). That said, the lack of visual noise in our multiplayer is, in part, a design decision.

Edit, whoops you were talking about the Sword Base one. Below I'm talking about the Powerhouse shot.

I was thinking it looked like a massive pipe to control the flow of water through the system. There's three smaller pipes connecting to the big one, and three big cords coming from each pair of consoles. My thought was, it's a pumping station and the switches control the level of flow through the system. I think it's probably cosmetic only, but it would be neat if throwing the switches would increase (or perhaps cut off) the flow of water through each of those three smaller pipes, which feed into the main water stream through the map, which in turn would open up new routes as if it were a gate.

Again, it's probably cosmetic, but that looks like the idea behind it.

Speaking of fat pipes, I hear Wu has one. He might be able to host the montage; I'd shoot him a PM.

It's one of the design philosophies I've always liked about Bungie's MP. The maps are detailed, but not cluttered. Visibility and clarity of surroundings is paramount.

I agree with Mr. B to an extent.

His point wasn't about mud and clutter; thats not what he was getting at. It's the sense of a virtual space, feeling lived in or worked in or occupied. Feeling like someone or something really has been there, whether it be nature or human.

Its completely possible to make a game with more objects/textures to express a real sense of being occupied without sacrificing gameplay mechanics, much like they are now doing with the nades and geometry. I'm not saying that the solution is the same - but there's always a solution. Some games do it successfully and some not so much: Uncharted 2, Gears of War, MW2, Stranglehold, BF2:BC, and Assassins Creed come to mind. (which ones work and which don't you can decide but in that list there's at least one that does)

It's just that at this point and time Bungie really doesn't care for it, and so in effect neither does the fans (or is it the other way around). I think they probably don't want to spend the time trying to add that extra visual flair and make it work gameplay-wise when they feel that time could be spent elsewhere.

Agreed. At this early stage, I really doubt they are thinking about little details. The Beta is very much for testing abilities, weapons etc, not for decorating the levels.

I think we all ought to take a step back and look at where urk said that it's partially art direction, not just there are better things to spend time on. When I see those screenshots of Sword Base, I get a sense of sterility and strength. Kinda reminds be of Kamino from Star Wars Episode II. We know exactly dick about how ONI operates, and they seem to be super secretive about everything they do. They wouldn't just leave papers hanging out on the desks or overflowing litter bins. It's most likely meant to be impressively sterile, so we shouldn't be surprised that their janitorial staff is top notch.

The clinical style I've seen on Sword base reminds me of Halo 1's basic but effectively eye-pleasing human interior design.

The less traffic cones and inanimate objects that I can possibly be humiliated by in matchmaking, the better. GAF can hate me for that, but I don't give a damn.

Leave the clutter and ability to add assets to Forge. I like my multiplayer play space clinical, details on top are welcome though.

Oh I definitely get it. I thought of Mass Effect when I saw that. It works for that stage. Although not every stage is like that. I don't think Mr. B was confining his argument (or partly mine) to that particular stage - or even the 4 stages but the whole series perhaps?

For me it's a minor issue. It would be nice, but if they can't do it and make it work then fine. I'm more than satisfied with what I've seen for just the beta mind you! I will say though, if there isn't more extreme weather like the rain soaked stage of overlook I will be massively disappointed.
I wonder if I keep pressing the issue will it be addressed by the Bungie Overlords?

Seems to me the extent of the "cleanness" is a decision specific to the Sword Base map.

Hey says this:

There's not a single crack or piece of mud on the floor - it's just one giant uninteresting tiling texture. Not a single mark on the wall or in a corner...not single thing found on the table or on the floor - like the maps were professionally cleaned before you arrived.

And we have screens like this and this and this on other maps. Crumbling concrete, scattered dirt and mud, cables strewn about, rust and water stains. If they wanted to dirty up Sword Base, that's easy enough. But that's not the intended look of that specific map.

And urk seems to be hinting the visual pass stage isn't done yet (nor was it for Halo 3's beta).

I am downloading the blastacular map pack now. I'll be playing for a bit if anyone wants to hook up once they are done. Gamertag is Hydranockz :p
