Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

My fellow brothers using the OG 20gig are cringing at this beta size talk.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to delete some stuff to make room for the beta. :(

Get yourselves a cheap USB memory stick/hard drive. The new update that brought USB storage support is lovely.

I'm also rocking a "20GB" (AKA 12GB) but I've hooked up an old external Hard Drive and for the first time in a while I have all my DLC and all my XBLA games downloaded. And I've got enough room to install a couple of games!

Well there's nothing else to talk about, is there? We have to wait until Thursday for the gametypes reveal (or is it Friday w/ GTTV) and then the update Friday evening.
Well, there is this little gem that Wu posted about at HBO. Author Richard Morgan talks about why his Crysis 2 is so awesome, and calls the Halo characters "bullshit archetypes". My favorite part:

How can you argue with that logic?

It will be just big enough that you have to make some painful deletions. Or, move stuff to a USB drive.

Also, new post at Nobel Actual that I assume has been posted but that I missed. It's a tradition.

Edit: on tap this week:

Gametypes, sans Invasion: Thursday (likely)
Weekly Update (Friday evening)
Invasion and Boneyard reveal on G4 late Friday night

We should also get "action shots" of the maps this week.

Gametrailers TV comes on Spike, not G4. :p

FRANKLY.
Damn, I thought folks would take a higher-minded approach to this argument. :(

Morgan is a very good writer - I've listed him in my top 3 SF writers for a few years now. Yeah, his opinion about Halo characters seems a bit superficial - but why not look at the meat of what he has to say (stripped from the inflammatory words he chose to use), and argue with THAT?

Bleh.

Wu, you must realize that I am quite amenable to the idea of having intelligent, "high-minded" discussions about the plot, characters, etc. of the Halo universe.

But sometimes I just like to type swears on the Internet.

Edit: and I am genuinely interested to see what he does with Crysis 2, because the first game did not raise any bars for storytelling in games.

Here's some more :lol
The reason that its fiction doesn’t work has nothing to do with the fact that you don’t get to see Master Chief’s face, it’s because of lines like ‘Okay … I’m gonna get up there and kill those guys’.

I don't even know what to say. At least have some sort of example.

Fair enough. (Sorry - I was responding to not just your post, but the entire thread at HBO, where folks are all "oh, he dissed Halo! HE SUCKS!" Seems like an idiotic attitude to me.)

Well, he does do what I think his job was for that interview: get me interested in playing Crysis 2. Now I have to see how his archetypal characters stack up against Bungie's. :D

Also, I do actually agree with him! From NLU:

[T]he members of the squad often struggle to defy their set archetypes (and much of their dialogue is trite) ...

Bonus edit: I guess I am just a little tired of big- or even medium-sized authors (usually authors of genre fiction... without diminishing genre fiction) getting hitched to videogame projects, bragging widely about how superior their story is gonna be, and then delivering much of a muchness only after realizing the challenges of writing for games are very new and very real.

Lttp but amazing work bladed. Thanks for including my play.

Og 12 here, hopefully I have a few demos I can kill.

Also looks like I'm flying home from the west coast on the third late to the beta I will be.

I like his writing.

And to argue the opposing view you'd have to say, "Halo's story is perfect." Which obviously it isn't. I do think he's being a little unfair to the craft of the game entire and the amazing universe building that's a necessary part of the experience. Bungie created an amazing universe and a story that I enjoy. But story is a lone component and you could remove it all and still have a fun game. On the flipside, the cost for a great animated story is between 15 and 20 bucks. On DVD. If you remove all the game from a $60 story... it better be a REALLY good story.

Anyhoo, I hope he makes an amazing story for Crysis 2 and creates compelling action game characters that defy those stereotypes and I hope he enjoys making stories for games and learns that it's a lot more than the sum of its parts.

Poor way to set the table if he wants to inspire some dialog about dialog. He could have easily used Crysis to make his point. But he's not looking for a high-minded approach. He's looking for hits.

"You won't be mouthing off when I have my supersuit! I'll go ninja on your ass!"

Yeah.

I haven't actually read the guy (I read very little science fiction or genre fiction generally, not because I don't like it, but because there is so much great "literary" fiction to get through, and I only have one lifetime), but I could pick out two or three sentences -- starting with the very first one! -- that make me inclined to believe he is not a particularly pleasant person, whatever about his credentials as a writer.

I mean how he approaches the writing of Crysis 2 is his own business, and we'll all be the judges, but it can't be a good idea to piss in the waters you're about to wade into.

You have CLEARLY never spent any time in a community pool. :lol :lol

(I'll agree with the sentiment, though; you're all right that he's being a jerk about it. I'm curious to see how well he does with Crysis 2.)

I do all my swimming in five-star hotels. Where I also write my novels. The characters of which read as if they were real people, birthed entire from the fecund womb of my imagination. Daily I fashion the grand archetypes from which others will one day sketch at best a few poor likenesses, meagre and etiolated, devoid of the life and colour they once possessed.

My post probably came across wrong but I really do think it was a clever marketing move in order to drum up contraversy and get people to try out Crysis.

This is without any context on who the guy is on my part though.

P.S. Congrats Hydranockz

Will we get more information about the planet? Like about the gravitation, the different moons? yeah i'm a astronomy geek, sorry for that.

Just turned my 360 on for the first time in a month, just to make some room on my 20GB, but the display is messed up :/ It doesn't display red (so all colours are messed up), and even if I do try to launch a game, it stops displaying video, as in my tv just looses signal :(

Should I try to overheat it for RROD? Maybe if I do it quick I can get it back before beta starts.

It'll take about 3 weeks so do what you think is best. You could turn it on and leave it on so
it'll slowly nuke itself. *shrug*

I know this is a dumb question, but Is your red video cable plugged into the red audio port on accident?

Wasnt the Halo 3 beta 1.3 or so gigs? that was with 3 maps, so 4 maps and all the added stuff and higher res textures, I still stand by my 2.3 gig guess :D
The Halo 3 one was 911Mb. Just checked the file size on my xbox. Unless you Crackdown peasants got a bigger file for some reason. :p

Before you microwave your 360 :)lol) try out a different cable and tv, the problem may not actually be with the Xbox.

Just a quick note.. I played some Halo 3 last night after some time off and got to play the Prepare to Drop Double XP playlist and I gotta say.. I like it! Swat games without the BR is nice. People go and try to use other weapons like the Carbine and even the Pistol will do some damage. I'd like to see it coming back next month.

I also enjoy Prepare to Drop. Using the pistol and having it do something is fun. It can feel pretty badass to 180 and fire off a carbine shot and get a kill. An added bonus: I rarely get kills with the sniper. I normally just tag someone and fail to finish. In PtD, all I need to do is tag them! :lol

Agh... Sorry for your luck! I know the turn around time on Xbox's can really vary... I've had mine come back in less than a week and other times it has taken a few weeks....

This is my failed attempt at getting my Elite to Red Ring (It broke after a few months, stopped reading disks... But it wasn't covered under warranty)
YOkSJ.jpg

for clarification - that is the power cable to the Elite running into the huge blanket.

Grenade spam was pretty terrible for ODST Slayer (although I got a pretty awesome across-the-map frag kill on The Pit). It was incredibly difficult to push as a team when 1 grenade could take you all out. I would have liked to see no grenade starts, and use them more as a power weapon. Still, it was about as fun for the few games that I played.

EDIT: Damn, I'm gonna be outta town for Team Throwback this weekend. Bleh

Relying on MS support may not be the best idea so close to the beta, it took me well over a month to get my Xbox back.

P.S. You have the same computer as me!

Also Halo 3 beta was 911.17. According to the 117 references I change my previous guess of 7.7 gig to 1.17 gig (or 11.7 gig) for the Reach beta :D

Also pretty nice of Urk to link to the tage, nice!

The HaloGAF crew made a montage. There are so many good plays, they had to make the stinkin' thing like a million minutes long.

What books has Morgan done? I really have nothing to read and have been looking for some good sci-fi books.

Also I think the characters in the Halo series (not the games) are good, not amazing but definitely interesting. My favorite character is still Kurt 051 :D

I bet that there's a thread on Bungie.net where it's people saying that we all suck and that they could've done better and that the music isn't good, and that they're challenging us all to a 1v1.

How I miss those days at B.net so...
