Was there a lot of combat on the ground at Reach? How many teams of spartans were actually on the surface?

If I recall correctly, all of the Spartan IIs were down on Reach with the exception of John, Linda and James.

Watched the trailer today, enjoyed it. Facial animations being the one thing that really stuck out. Such an improvement.

I really like the bleak look, Reach is a grim tale after all.

One minor annoyance though. Heavy Spartan "Tough Guy", skull helmet, knife sharpening. Talk about cliche. If the knife is actually in the game then I'll eat my words but knife sharpening, really!? It's about as cliche as cigar chewing military men.

You know, I really want Bungie to do one thing regarding the game play in Reach. Since both Spartan IIs and apparently Spartan IIIs have an improved eye sight and can see in the dark, I want to have the option of not using a flash light. Just have the screen switch to some sort of low light vision mode or some thing.

It didn't bother me during Halo CE, 2 or 3 since I haven't read any of the books at the time but after reading the Fall of Reach, I started wondering why the hell is John using a flash light in the games.

Halo has always been full of space marine cliches, robbing Aliens' style whole cloth, even more than other shooters. I don't understand why they wouldn't continue in this tradition, especially as Reach is a very militarized world.

Bungie has laughed at us each time we requested the H1 pistol, giving us inferior versions each time. I don't have any hopes for the particular pistol in the trailer, just that they'll include the real M6D in the map files to place in Forge 2.0, or that we'll be able to make it ourselves (weapon editor, do it Bungie!)

Aww man, I love flashlights in games. Give me a good, realtime lighting engine, a flashlight, and I'm sure to enjoy your game. Don't care for night vision, thermal vision, or the ODST VISR mode; I just want more flashlights.

Agreed. Just let us, in some way, put it into the MP game. Even if it only shows up in customs.

Could be either:

Very true. Which is why I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned it. Maybe it's because the M6D has always been a very polarizing part of HCE for people. There are those that loved it, and feel it encapsulated everything that was good about HCE. Then there are those that felt that it was imbalanced and made HCE's MP aspect single faceted.

I was just expecting a bigger reaction to someone carrying both an M6 class pistol and a BR. I'm probably just too used to the B.net arguments that have been raging for 5 years now.

Maybe people have just moved past the M6D fascination after how Bungie trumpeted the Automag as the return of the M6D and it was no where close.

I'd love to see a pistol return in Reach that's the love-child of the M6D from HCE and the M6G from Halo 3.

The second picture from the VGA trailer that's overlayed with 'Haters gonna Hate' is in response to an internet meme. A rather bad one IMO.

Speaking of "so good" the whole "haters gonna hate" picture in the OP is funny as hell. Best play on a terrible internet meme I've seen in a long time. So cheers to whoever did that one.
What is this even supposed to mean?

Isn't there something inherently stupid about painting a "cool" skull design over the external layer of your HUD/visor with a white marker? I don't see how it would even work with a lexan face plate in todays world, let alone a super advanced electronic hud system from teh futar. Admittedly it is a timelessly immature canon exclusive motif :lol

Other than that patter, I'm getting a distinct Halo Of The Rings feel here, similar to the direction Epic went with Gears 2. Curious to see gameplay and any changes to mechanics, if any, as well as the map scale. They hint at larger areas in that short video, but some of the very linear single player levels from H3 were substantially larger than the MP maps to the point of it being kind of ludicrous, so who knows if they will even exercise that benefit.

It may be cliche but the real military is full of cliche tough guys.

I see, thanks. So there should be around 30 Spartans on the ground I guess? Are the Spartans in the trailer part of Red Team or are they a seperate unit?

I wonder if you come across any other Spartan teams during the game, would this be possible according to canon?

Edit: Didn't mean to single you out there Pete. As I did lol'l at your post. Just saying in general. :D

Why are people acting as if they have never heard of war paint? Come on the guy isn't painting that skull to be cool it is to strike fear in his foes and it is a bad ass and really great form of psychological warfare. Things like that give soldiers an extra edge over their enemies, even if it is only in their head.

The problem I see is that it could possibly be hinting at the ability to do that in MP (weakly update talked about picking apart this trailer for MP goodness). If it is stock emblems that Bungie gives us then thats fine but if there is any kind of player design then it could be a problem. I really don't want to fight an entire team of dickheads (even though that usually happens in halo :lol ).

As far as the epicness of the trailer goes, Halo is all about the big areas to take the fight to so I am loving this trailer. The impression I get from this trailer is that the player is really being dropped into a shitstorm. So as long as they drop those Spartans into a huge landscape that is overwhelmed with Elites, I will be happy. :D

You can have your flash light. I want my night vision mode. It's all about choice.

Visr mode was sweet. It went so perfectly with the mood of the empty rain-slick streets.

In fact, I'm looking forward to any ODST elements that they put into Reach. Hub/Open World aspects, Battle Net AI, etc.

The spartans in the trailer are all new characters called the noble team. And yes there is always a chance of possible run ins, just not with master chief because he is long gone.

Because its a clear face plate. Unless the spartan managed to somehow rig the helmet to go opaque in different colors to make that image, it would be pretty stupid to paint over the part you look through.

Edit: Ignoring any future tech, if you wanted to have warpaint it would be something around the visor of the helmet, not on it.

Wouldn't be surprised if they did somewhat of a side by side story and broke up the action on Reach by having you play as Chief and where ever he is off to (need to re-read Reach like now).

He's a super soldier, I am pretty sure he could figure out a way. :D

Edit: The visor making them appear to have no face and of course everyone is curious what is behind that mask, I think the visor if can be done to not effect sight, is a very smart place to put it. REally stands out from the others.

It's not paint. Look at the video/gif/screen caps again. He carved it using his knife I suppose. Don't ask me how he can see through it but I'm sure some one that mental will manage with a blurry view. In a way it's funny since most of us are assuming he's the demo guy so in a sense he doesn't need to aim much.

So I guess this is good news.

Reach and it's trailer look THAT good that people have to nitpick at the EVA Spartans helmet scratching?

Awesome.

This game is gonna rock.

Ok yeah the music in the trailer is pretty similar to the music from the end ODST desperate measures trailer.

Edit or I could be wrong. Ok I am wrong i guess, for some reason it sounded rather similar to me.

But now after watching the trailer so much I cant tell if its Carter or the new guy that is saying "Affirmative" after they get on their chopper/craft/flying machine.

Reading some of the posts in this thread, I can't help but ask you guys if you're even taking into account that the canon from the novel "The Fall of Reach" isn't even official Halo canon. (Well, I think I remember Bungie saying that. Correct me if I'm wrong) For all we know, Bungie could be making up their own story for Halo Reach.

Off-topic: Does anyone else think that the voice of the Commander is voiced by Brad Pitt? It sure sounds like it to me.

Yeah, Shishka even said it's not paint a few pages back.
Do you ever get to come out of time out in the avvy department or are you banished forever? It is times like this were I would be way bummed if I couldn't express me hype via avatar.
Edit: Not trying to be a jurk, I think you have had that as long as I can remember.

There has been discussion of semi-canon stuff before, but I do not think Fall of Reach was included.
As it's the basis for so much in the Spartan Universe I'd say it's 99% canon, with room for a few small changes if they wanted it, but I don't think they want to be seen changing things.

Agreed, I was just wondering about this when I saw Bladed's post.

At 1:55 in the trailer, does anyone know what that arch thing is in the background on the left side of the screen?
It's Reach's moon.

Funny you mention that. As I was catching up on the thread after work today I saw Letters' post of awesome .gif avatars and wept. Wept like a baby girl. I think I'll PM a mod and beg forgiveness.
Mine wasn't even that saucy :(

Hit me up, I've been looking for people to play L4D2 with. Though I'm a little overwhelmed by how good you guys may be having played L4D so much.

hubba hubba.

I can't believe I'm here wondering about a campaign that's probably more than 10 months away. Makes for a nice excuse to replay ODST while I wait for more details.

* Crosses fingers for 6 player co-op with matchmaking.

I like the halo series, but damn, i can not for the life of me ever remember what happend in the games story, alot of go here and shoot this. Maybe because i always did co op I didn't pay a ton of attention to whats goin on. So this game is a prequel all current halo games? Was master chief the only spartan left during these games or there are others out there?

It was taken already, a page or two ago.

It's a prequel to the Bungie Halo games yes, in a sense.
There are other Spartans but it's complicated and we don't know everything.

I was using it but when letters put up the avvy of the Spartan II I swapped it out. Feel free. I am pretty sure no one besides me has mentioned using it.

Trailer was underwhelming. It looks just like ODST - a bunch of soldiers putting ammo in their guns and calling each other cool code names...

i agree... except it wasnt a proper trailer, but a cutscene. i expect less loading of weaponry and cool code names in our first proper reach trailer (but loads more explosions)
