IIRC, you didn't play Halo CE campaign when it came out. Back then when everyone was blown away by the game, before there was even a competitive scene. That's why you don't get it. Also, the sound it made back then when fired was godly.

I remember the first time I fired it, the original Duke controller shook so hard I thought it was going to blow up or something. Great stuff.

Disagreed Halo 2 didn't have the AR and that game was fucking awesome. Probably because it didn't have the AR. Hell I didn't even know about the AR until Halo 3, and it fucked that game up big time (being the default weapon was such a stupid idea, if anything it would be a secondary, MC would rock the BR)

I agree that it shouldn't have been the Default weapon (or just have it be AR/BR all of the time).

For what I was saying about it being the "iconic Halo weapon", those were Bungie's words. I have to agree with them, since whenever I think of Master Chief/Halo (the games/weapons), I think of him using a AR (mostly due to Halo 1 and Halo 3, but when I think of actually playing Halo, I think about wasting 5 minutes every game searching for a BR. :lol )

I dunno it looks like an add-on attachment to the needler?
I was thinking the exact same thing. The way the second gun looks it appears to have a needler shoved into it from the front. Maybe its a sort of weapon magnifier for the Covenant?

The latest GameInformer will be hitting subscribers (such as myself) on about January 10th and someone asked Andy from GI if Halo: Reach would be the cover story and he said:

what an interesting question. Shame I can't answer it. But I will say that is an excellent question.

We're almost there! :D

(Can Heretic CTF be first to five? This is one of those questions I hope we won't have to ask in H:R MM..)

Yeah, it seems that should've been an the option/setting in Team Classic (but really, in every CTF game on Heretic). Hopefully Reach's Multiplayer team/Optimatch team tweaks the gametypes and settings in Reach.

I always thought it might be a "beta" Carbine that the Covenant just put the Needler in the casing to test their idea for a Carbine.

(Is it just me, or does the Needler picture look like Kat's arm? Hmm...)

You may be on to something.... ;)

Maybe there's a ODST like system in Reach for missions. I hope we play a level as Buck so we can miss everything besides the broad side of a barn (but we'll still miss that 90% of the time). Wonder if Bungie added the Duck Hunt dog in that level...or a Grunt that does the same thing.

EDIT:
or a level as DARE where we use our chin as a melee weapon. Who needs a Hammer when you have that?

Just noticed I've passed 10,000 total BR kills, 4,000 Ranked Sniper kills, and even 1,000 total Sword kills tonight :lol

As big as its flaws (netcode, hit detection, weapon balance, playlist management, etc etc) are, I just keep on playing. If Reach is an improvement MP-wise (as it better be!) I don't know if I'll ever play something else on XBL :lol

Pshh I probably have around 20k BR kills.

i ended up getting mythic early through HBO (thanks again Wu!) and those couple of days were a total blast and some of the best times I've had playing with randoms.

what i really wish is that xboxlive could implement some sort of group function where you could get randomly matched up with people from a group you could join, lets say like a gaf group...wait, no, maybe that's not the best idea.

Hey have you guys talked about the latest Bungie podcast? I'm too lazy to look back and see but I heard something pretty interesting.

Starts at about 1:27:28

It's from the segment with Mat Noguchi

Sketch says, "And what you are working on is not Halo related, we can say that"

Noguch says, "Oh we can? sweet"

Sketch says, "Yea we can say that"

Urk says, "Yea, it's new"

Sketch says, "We've been saying that for years now" (this seems like it's not directed to what Urk said)

Then, the most important part, Noguch says "Well it's not Halo"

Then laughter, "Jesus Christ" and Sketch trying to move along and change the subject.

Sorry if this was talked about already and please make fun me if it has. To me it seems as though Noguchi saying, "Well it's not Halo" to Urk's "Yea, it's new" means that it's not new, as in a new original IP, it's just not Halo. Anyone else pick up on this? I haven't played a Bungie game other than Halo so I don't really know what is the most likely old school Bungie IP that could be revived or something alone those lines. Does that make sense, or am I just trying to find something from nothing?

Podcast is pretty great so far by the way. Hilarious as always.

Yep, noticed this exactly. It seems to heavily imply that its not actually a new IP. Which is...interesting. But I don't want to speculate.

Gnop 2 XBLA! Someone make a hype thread.

I really hope the next game isn't a shooter. I'm excited to see Bungie dudes try something completely different. Maybe a new take on Myth?

MS gives Bungie the greenlight to merge Oni and Perfect Dark to reboot both series.

Believe.

A bit off the Reach topic, but I watched District 9 last night. Man, what a brilliant movie. Microsoft really, really, really dropped the ball when they passed on Neill Blomkamp to direct a Halo movie. Holy shit, what an epic movie that could have been...

From what I know the two producing studio's assign to the project kept bickering about merchandising.

MS has now taken back the movie rights.

Microsoft didn't "pass" on it.

T'was the studios that refused to fund the Halo movie budget, which was estimated to be over $300 million, and when the studios decided to pass, the movie was canned due to money issues. Neil Blomkamp was attached.

Now that Neil has walked away due to the studios deciding not to fund it, it was presumed dead until a rumour surfaced that Steven Spielberg had gotten a copy of a script, specifically Halo - The Fall of Reach (sound familar). Apparently Mr Spielberg is now in process of getting the movie back on the tracks, which, if true, he may have more success in doing so than the former attached director, maybe something to do with Mr Spielberg having more weight with studios than Blomkamp.

I skimmed over that Halo Reach message that was in Halo 3. It said something about the beta verison's availability and mentioned the Xbox Live Marketplace. Is it going to be available there, too? Or can you only play it via ODST?

Only ODST, as far as we have been told. It's the only way.

Marathon (and with that, Pathways) is the only IP that Bungie owns themselves (Bungie also owns the Superintendent icon, so maybe we'll be seeing that Superintendent platformer that was always joked about :lol). Take 2 owns Myth and Oni, and Microsoft owns Halo.

I doubt Bungie is going to make Marathon Four, especially since the storyline has been over since Marathon: Infinity. And to be honest, the only way to bring Marathon into the current market was already done with Halo. Halo was the next evolution of Marathon gameplay wise.

Finally got a chance to listen to the podcast. Fun stuff, and good to hear that Reach is further along than Halo 3 at this point in development.

I was tickled to hear the shout out to Miner Dig Deep, which is hands-down the best one dollar I've spent on gaming. It's seriously awesome.

Also, Avatar. Holy fuck. Still haven't recovered. Hauling the kid to see it Saturday.

Yeah, its a pretty amazing movie. I just came back from watching it a second time and I'm really happy. I knew that I probably wouldn't get a chance to watch the movie in 3D again (for at least 4-5 years) so I had to watch it a second time. James Cameron truly succeeded in creating a movie which the audience wants to watch in the theatre and feel like they're getting a special experience.

Gah, I really want to see it in 3D. I was supposed to on Saturday, but even though I bought tickets online, they oversold and we had to go to the 2D. Bullshit, if you ask me. It was so damn immersive in 2D, can't imagine how it would feel in 3D.

This site Halo: Reach will have been in development for only 1 year. They call this news? Get your facts strait. They think whenever a game is announced that that's when development starts... apparently.

http://www.split-screen.com/2009/12/23/rumour-halo-reach-development-finishing-by-july-2010/

That said, it looks like the game is set to release in September.
Such a dumb article. Didn't they also have that stupid analysis of Reach graphics?
Anyway, September would keep with Halo 3 and ODST, so I wouldn't be surprised. Unless there's something else coming in September.

That sucks man. If I was you, I'd complain and get a free voucher for the 3D screening. Or just pay to watch it in 3D again. Seriously, you have to experience it at least once.

It most likely will be in September, but I wish it would launch in November.

1) To relive the memories of buying Halo 1 and 2 in November. My birthday is November 11, and I got both Halo 1 & 2 on launch. So I had really amazing weeks in 2001 and 2004.

2) To have a bigger launch and destroy MW2 numbers. November sales are much higher than September...always.

Its too bad that it will probably be in September, lately Microsoft wants to get Halo out of the way first.

The girlfriend convinced me to go see Avatar and we had a blast with. And yeah, everytime I see Miller on he's digging holes. Speaking of certain people playing XBLA games instead of real games:
Defense Grid is $2.50 on Steam for the holidays. Great tower defense game.

Tashi's podcast quotes reminded me of something that stuck out to me:

Sketch - "You might come back to find that Atlas is overrun and in shambles"

Shishka - "Oh man Atlas... the group's been locked and it's still hard to keep track of. I've got testers that look at the place and even then we're overwhelmed by the amount of stuff, that we to sort through."

I really hope he's talking about another Atlas because the one I know of, the one that has about 7 or 8 posts a week and a new thread/submission twice a month is moving at a snail's pace. I sure hope Reach has some sort of pipeline that can process a whole lot more user content without them getting overwhelmed.

Neither of those reasons stack up against getting Reach two months earlier. Hope this was a joke post.

It's nice to see Bungie's internal deadline. Seems like Reach will have the smoother development cycle that Halo 3 enjoyed instead of Halo 2's bumpy road.

That reminds me, that Miner Dig Deep game, I downloaded the demo ages back and forget to actually purchase it. Should complement Peggle Nights and Worms 2.

While we're on the subject of Indie games I recommend Avatar Golf. It's made by one of our very own GAFers. It also has a Golf Course editor, currently I am working on a Middle Earth themed course.

There's no way Halo Reach will sell 6 Million copies at launch no matter what month it's released in.
