Halo needs more time in the oven not less. They really need to spend a lot of time prototyping and seeing what is fun.

There is no way MS will let them have that time - MS's handling of its exclusives is partly what's pushing me to ps4 next gen

Off the top of my head:
Fable
Gears
Halo

Have all been whored to the point that they are no longer attractive.

Is Sony as bad? I honestly don't know?

Either way - Microsoft does not show restraint and let its exclusives have the time they need to be good - the quick cash grab approach is ruining the games and I hope ultimately costs ms a lot of money so they learn their lesson.

Between that and the 14 day buy and play and family plan bullshit Microsoft try and spew I really think I am getting sick of them. Bungie got out at the right time.

Sony's not as bad. 2-3 year dev cycles mostly. Most of their major devs are split into 2 teams that work on separate games.

WAIT A SECOND.

Let's do yearly Halo releases right.

Year 1: Mainline Halo title by 343. Solid narrative and competitive arena gameplay. Releases every 2, 2.5, or 3 years. Gametypes are things like CTF and Assault.
Year 2: A new HALO: Infinity title. It has an episodic campaign focusing on Spartan Ops. Features next-gen, Battlefield-scale Infinity multiplayer. Maps are ported over to the mainline halo title as well. Developed by Certain Affinity. Features Halo 4-style gametypes like Flood and Dominion.
Year 3: Wildcard side game to hold us over until next mainline title. Has feature parity with Halo and HALO: Infinity.

People who think Uncharted 3 is better than Uncharted 2 are damn wrong.

#Truthfact

Neil Druckmann is the mothafuckin man! The dude helped lead in the creation of TWO 96 metacritic scoring games this generation. His lack of involvement with Uncharted 3 showed. Seriously excited to see what he and Naughty Dog do next.

Nah, I think they should just release one game for the entire lifespan of the Xbox One, with modding and capable of handling hundreds of players on a single server. Then they could release downloadable Campaign packs through the Xbox Marketplace, and maybe even have the ability to make custom Campaign missions. Then, they could have teams dedicated to making Campaign packs, working with the competitive community to create competitive gametypes, creating armour packs that fit in with the Halo universe (available on the Xbox Marketplace), fixing bugs, etc, etc. They could have in-depth customisation of Spartans and Elites, and several models to choose from for other playable species. The customisation system could be global, unless the owner of a server chooses to use custom models. People are able to donate to fund future projects of creators (with a small percentage going towards 343 and Microsoft). This way, 343/MS could give gamers an enjoyable experience that can last for years and years, at a low cost to the consumer and still profit from it.

If Halo is annualized, that means multiple devs right? Maybe CA will finally get their own game.

More like their make own campaign

I dont think MS will allow so many devs for Halo, Maybe 343i for the main trilogy and a second one for spinoffs

I replay the trench run sometimes. Thought it was fun.

Also made me realize something about the art direction of Halo 4. Everything got so bland. Lots of iconic Halo images were traded off for something that looks more "practical"

The shotgun, for instance. Lost its traditional shape.

But I was mainly talking about the UNSC frigates. Get to the end of the trench run where you have to disable the guns, and look into the sky. A bunch of frigates jump in and they look like slabs of gray. Like long cigars.
From this

To this.

I like the new shotgun, actually. Bungie ruined the classic look with Reach. I like the new frigates too, but they suffer from having less good camera angles. I'm more bothered y retconning the Dawn into the cigar Frigate than I am with frigates as new ships in the future.

Man that thread is nuts. Rumour that Xbox One will work with Kinect unplugged....people assume a $399 SKU without a Kinect.

Microsoft should give consumers the option to buy a cheaper sku that doesn't include kinect.

I disagree with excluding the Kinect from certain sku's. There's a lot of potential with that thing now that it'll have a 1:1 attachment rate with the xbone, not to mention there could be more Kinect apps (what they would be best at IMO instead of full retail games) on XBLA in the future.

crosspost:
The next Halo will simply be titled Halo, this way it will pull people in thinking it's a reboot when instead it's just going to be balls out 343 envisioned Halo. believe dat

The other reason to title it Halo instead of Halo 5 is probably because they don't want players thinking they have to play H1-4 to get the story.

I dunno how I feel about the required Kinect.

I think the Xbone should be able to function without it. There is NO reason you shouldn't be able to unplug it and keep playing.

However... I think they should bundle it with every SKU. Kinect has a lot of potential that wasn't realized last gen because no one had it and it wasn't as good.

Kinect means EVERYONE is capable of gamechat for one, and with everyone having one, dev's can build cool features that utilize the Kinect. Everything from something superficial like being able to video chat while playing (like those HUD popups in Halo/Titanfall) or something like in Burnout Paradise where you could send someone a picture of yourself after you take someone out, or a picture of your victim the moment he gets taken out to see his reaction.

Or something more gameplay focused like voice commands to augment the experience. Imagine it in a game like FIFA which suffers a lot from "I DIDN'T MEAN TO PASS TO THAT GUY" you can call out passes by calling out the player you wanna pass to. Or Horror games that read your heartrate. Not sure if the Kinect can read where you are looking, but it can certainly track your head, meaning stuff like this.

halo 4 destroyed the last bit of bungie's canon

so Halo by 343 will just be 343's halo canon

I can sorta see something like this happening.

Have a prologue: After humanity won the war and prevented their extinction, the were left with the Mantle, the responsibility of guardians of all life in the galaxy (lol forerunners u know nothing of humans way to go gg) The forerunners left behind powerful artifacts all across the galaxy... unfortunately there are those who wish not to see humans ascend to their rightful place. Covenant, Didact etc.

It's basically a clean slate.

In terms of presenting story to newcomers, it's not a bad idea. Just drop a shorter version of the crawl that you saw in ODST. All you really need to know is we fought a war with these guys, we won, but there's still more threats out there. The rest you have to do with smart storytelling during the actual game, that's the hard part.

Also, since this is an OT thread I don't feel bad about posting this brilliant facepalm piece of game criticism:

I definitely agree. It's a shame they pushed out Kinect last gen, because it's tainted the name for all the hardcore gamers who spout the "it's all gimmicky bullshit" nonsense. The tech seems to be there this time. While I understand Microsoft wanted to appeal to hardcore gamers at E3, they should also be pushing great games that make use of this functionality.

Yup.

Then Master Chief takes his giant space bird robot machine and traverses the galaxy, assembling a team of the galaxies best to reclaim lost forerunner weaponry, vehicles and technology. The team is to prepare for the return of the precursors. Dossiers will be available to be tackled in any order you choose. An open galaxy, free to explore.

Your team will consist of various species across the galaxy.

The Hunter - the teams heavy weapon specialist. Can breach doors and wreak havoc with his canon.

The Honor Guard Elite - the ninja. A master in stealth and hand to hand combat.

The Jackal/ Watcher duo - the squad support. Can be used offensively for suppression and additional shielding.

The Skirmisher - the master in guerrilla warfare. Uses his advanced speed and swiftness to get behind enemy lines and flank, throwing enemies a curveball in battle.

The Drone - the team scout. Can fly high above the battle and offer intel of the battlefield.

The Promthean sniper - equipped with a Binary rifle, this friendly can remove distanced foes from the equation in a heartbeat.

The Armored Crawler - the rusher. Get up front and personal with the enemies. Can disarm them if the opportunity arises.

The Grunt - has control of various ordnance caches. Can drop supplies into battle for you.

With this team, you'll be unstoppable. But choose wisely, not every member can squad up at once. Pick and choose based on the assignment. It's your fight now spartan.

OH AND YOU CANT MAKE THE LEADER OF THE REBELS BLACK THATS RACIST.

Not to mention some of her points would be ameliorated if she actually paid attention to the story. There's no "this rebellion wouldn't have happened without the white man" theme at all.

There is an issue with both sides being completely unsympathetic, but that's just Ken Levine's "all philosophies are evil" schtick that's been present since Bioshock and before. At worst, it's poor writing, and it's bizarre how people want to jump from bad writing to "this is racist/sexist/etc".

It's like saying 343 is sexist because Palmer is a weak character. No, she's just a weak character.

EDIT: Slty you better watch yourself. I read that post and immediately thought it was Wahrer.

I was a bit disappointed that the themes of racism didn't really go anywhere either, but that's nothing more than my own expectation since the plot of the game isn't really about Columbia at all. It's about Booker, Elizabeth, Comstock and the Lutece twins.

I do agree that the giant info dump at the end could have been handled better. If the information was spread throughout the game, I feel like more people would have understood what it all meant right off the bat instead of scratching their heads and piecing it all together after the fact (or reading a summary on the internet).

She's wrong about this part though:
OH WAIT I GUESS THAT DIDN’T FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IN ANOTHER UNIVERSE YOU’RE STILL ALIVE
. I won't go into detail because the information is out there if you want it, but I don't blame her for not realizing it, it's not obvious at all to the player.

Well, info dumps are always an issue, as is not having enough time for things to feel "right", which is definitely an issue I had with Bioshock; I think if it had been less combat-oriented that would have helped.

I think Halo 4 actually handled this issue better than, say, Halo 3 did (although on the downside, not really explaining the Didact thing was a critical weakness. I've always given players crap for not understanding the story of the first three games, but Halo 4 does require a lot of extra reading to work properly.)

Bioshock does suffer from what I felt was on-the-nose dialogue and hand-holding towards the end (where I really just was close to yelling at my screen
"STOP MAKING ME OPEN THE SAME FOUR DAMN DOORS!
), but the people peering in and seeing racism everywhere are mostly just holding a mirror up to themselves.

I'd love to see Extra Credits do a piece on handling plot development in sequels. On that note, does anyone really think dropping numbers from sequels makes a difference? It seems like they've certainly fallen out of favor in certain ways, but if a Halo game is impenetrable it's going to be impenetrable regardless of whether it's Halo 15 or Halo Into Darkness

I was a big hater of Kinect this gen, but next gen its looking pretty impressive.

I'm going to disagree. Even bundling Kinect for everyone still means nothing. I don't want it to use my photo for personal reactions, I don't want to speak to people through it. What is its use for?

The voice controls are nice, saying Xbox On etc. But why use motion controls when I can use a button on a controller/remote?

It can't work in other games because you'll still have people not want to use it. Is it really better to say, pass to Messi, shoot, as opposed to pressing A and then X?

It would only work bundled in if it was integral to every game. You couldn't play games without it, you know? Buy look at the wii-mote for instance. So many people chose to use gamecube controllers to play Mario kart Wii or Smash Bros. Brawl rather than the wii mote.

It's unnecessary tech that raises the price and turns off a lot of gamers. It's wishful thinking to say it'll be used by devs now because it's mandatory.

Think about it, how many of you would buy an XbOne if it came with no Kinect but was $399?

Means nothing? Having every owner of an X1 have a Kinect is huge. The Kinect for 360 sold quite well, but even at that it was 15-20% of the install base. When a developer makes a game that uses Kinect, that's 80+% of the user base than cannot use that feature in the game or cannot play the game at all if it's a Kinect only game like Dance Central.

Everyone having one really changes things for developers, and obviously it doesn't need to be stated that the actually Kinect device this time is WAY better than the last one, some pretty nice tech.

Even if everyone doesn't want one, from Microsoft's perspective it's still the absolutely the right decision to have a Kinect with every Xbox, otherwise it will always be a throwaway accessory with limited potential.

---------------------

As for the actual feasibility of X1 without Kinect, from what I've read it seems the Kinect is extremely integrated into the OS (EX: the Kinect is how the game assigns controllers to each user instead of the manual sync ups and logins with each like the 360 does).

I'm surprised they haven't really shown anything yet that uses Kinect in a game. They weren't afraid to bombard us with tablet and mobile bullshit, so I wonder why they didn't do so.

Yeah, that's a shoe I hope to drop before release/in the next year.
It would (obviously) be great if someone has come up with a great and interesting gaming use case for it.

If not, it's a €100 mandatory add-on to a less powerful system.

So, who here is a Jurassic Park fan? JP4 sounds..interesting. Some sounds awesome, other parts seem a little much.

JURASSIC PARK 4, set in present day Isla Nublar, is now an actual theme park, as originally intended by John Hammond in the first film. It garners 10 million visitors per year and is completely safe - until it's not. The park itself is described a very Sea World-esque and includes an area called the Isla Nublar Lagoon. That means underwater dino's for the first time. No indication of what kind, but there's concept art showing one of the aquatic dino's, as part of a show, jumping out of the lagoon and eating a strung up great white shark like it was a fish for a dolphin at sea world.

As part of a show, you ask? That's right, folks, this will feature "tamed" dino's. In fact, our source indicated that the usually menacing Velociraptors (which will finally be muzzled, along with the T-Rex - until they're not) will actually be used to help fight the threat, which begins in the form of a new dinosaur, not seen in any of the previous films (and not disclosed to us) shows to be much smarter than originally thought and is the main cause of havoc breaking out at the park.

So, to sum it all up, JURASSIC PARK 4 will take place back on Isla Nublar with a fully operational dinosaur theme park (I'm sure no expense was spared) that's both prosperous and safe, until a new dinosaur figures out a way to wreak havoc, causing the use of the now tamed Velociraptors (and T-Rex? Unclear) as a means to fighting the threat.

http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/exc...on-the-story-and-concept-for-jurassic-park-iv

I'm just not fond of "tamed" Dinosaurs being used to "fight" a new dinosaur "threat". Everything else sounds fucking great. For what its worth, this leak is from an older draft and it apparently has seen many changes since then. (such as new writers)

No longer just a trilogy huh. Hope this doesn't mean we'll be seeing yearly releases for the main storyline.

It was changed to a 'saga' ages ago.

I understand that, but my point being, are developers really going to take advantage of it. And forcing everyone to get it is different from forcing everyone to use it.

So if FIFA does use voice controls, it still has to account for those who don't want to use voice controls. I don't know if I'm explaining what I mean properly. Like it sounds better on paper than in theory. Now on the one hand, having everyone guaranteed to have one, means they could work in fantastic controls, voice commands and inputs, but it'll only take off, if it's mandatory to use. So you can't proceed without say telling Cortana you are 'READY' etc. But then would devs really do things like that? Isn't it unnecessary cost to do things like that, while cool, ultimately don't matter in a bottom line. Sorry if I'm rambling. It's good for those who like Kinect, but it won't take off I think, will still be a gimmick, one which adds a lot of price to the console.
