Got hype after seeing their presentation at Wondercon last weekend. I'll be interested to see more of the overt fairy tale themes played out on screen.

Fairy tale themes?

I didn't see anything like that, personally. She read a Brother's Grimm storybook in one scene, but that's it.

Huh? They've already released one of the best films of the year so far with Jane Eyre. Plus, The American, A Serious Man and Sin Nombre were some of my favorite films of their respective years.

Hanna is also getting great reviews, not sure what your beef is.

They've been releasing quality films these days like The Expendables just pointed out. And this one looks no different.

All dem bitches got so excited for Kick Ass, when the real true Hit Girl film (that's actually good) is out today.

I talked with the producer of the film and she said she HATES the comparisions to Kick-Ass heh. I think they are somewhat warranted.

Haha it was just made in humor. I doubt they're anything alike aside from a young girl wrecking shit. I think Saoirse Ronan has the more promising future of the two to be honest though.

Didn't the Dust Brothers do the soundtrack to Fight Club? I know the Chems used that name back in the day, but I think they changed it.

Oh yeah. I learned about the strange history of that name just a couple of years ago.

Edit: This movie also has the creepiest Germans I've seen in decades in a film.

Yeah great movie. Will definitely end up in my top 10 by year's end. It's so stylishly made as well, quite a few good shots.

Loved all the fairytale imagery in here. Cate Blanchett was kinda hot in this film but also really creepy. And she reminded me a lot of the Big Bad Wolf.

Eric Bana rocked the shit in his fight scenes, but damn Saoirse Ronan. She's da future...the future. And that soundtrack.

It was awesome, but it unfortunately ran out of steam late in the game. The movie had some freaking badass sequences in it, so it's too bad they didn't save one for the end. Thought it could have used some more of one main thread at the end as well.
Considering the amount of time spent on Hanna getting to know that family and the outside world - some of my favorite parts of the movie - it's strange that they didn't pay off any of that at the end. They didn't even resolve her feelings about her "father." She gained information but we never saw her actually react to any of it.
I'm fine with everything that ultimately happened, but it felt like it ended a scene or two early.

I was loving it, it's always a bummer when something you're incredibly into kind of fizzles out a bit at the end. Still great, though, definitely worth seeing.

Good film, but not great. The action scenes are well choreographed and the score is very good (especially during the action), but I wish there would have been a little more to the plot (like, anything). Overall, though, I can't complain. I went in expecting a fun action flick, and that's exactly what I got. Not bad at all.

Saw it yesterday and absolutely loved it. Definitely going to be in my personal top 10 for the year.

Perfect soundtrack too.

A little less action then I'd hoped. But the few action scenes in there were fantastic.
I agree that the storyline involving the family and the father/daughter relationship did not have satisfying conclusions. No epic encounter at the end either
. Still liked it though, and dat score

I wanted to do a take on this someday. :(

With my non-existent production company and my lack of any film experience whatsoever.

'Adapt or Die' just sounds so lame and cheesy. But I'll check this out only because I think Ronan has some really good potential as an actress.

Seen it last night and thought some parts were pretty stupid and laid out just to move the story.

When Anna tells the girl she met where she was really meeting her Dad, and at the end where Cate Blanchett is running around in high heels...

I disagree with your assessment, actually.
Cate Blanchett's shoes are planted from the beginning. She's a badass spy who runs around in heels, despite that being a seemingly bad idea. It's a deliberate choice that says something about who she is, how much she cares about personal presentation, and how meticulous and calculated she can be. We first learn about her shoe preference very early on and there are multiple callbacks. You can not like the choice, but it's pretty clearly about character building, not plot.

Similarly Hanna telling the other girl about Berlin obviously advances the plot but is also intended to show that she has developed feelings of affection and trust for this near stranger even though she was supposed to be genetically engineered not to. It advances the plot but is also a character beat that helps the audience know where Hanna is at emotionally.

This was a good film, but it had the potential to be a really great one.

It's pretty much an average chase film elevated by some great performances (Blanchett's and Ronan's especially) and a cool soundtrack.

It tried to be super stylized, but I found it to be kind of bland.

OK GAF, tell me is this Leon level of awesome or just Long Kiss Goodnight/Red level of Hollywood awesome?

Pretty amazing movie that started off god-like but ended only decently. The excellent first half was let down by an average ending but still a great movie. Some really great performances in this which are enforced with great visuals and music.

You can help me with my Dune remaster.

Liked the movie overall, but when the character that was dumbfounded by a fluorescent light was Googling like a champ a day later, they lost me.

Yea there were some strange logical gaps in the movie, kinda have to give it a thumbs down for being a bit of a jumbled mess, but barely

The whole
Hanna is a walking encyclopedia
shtick got old really quickly.

I know she lacks social skills, but it doesn't make sense for her to just blurt it out like that to strangers.

I agree.

The first movie ever that made me feel like I was robbed of $13.50

Sometimes its fun to go in blind and be surprised , but I guess you sometimes risk stepping into a pile of shit like this one.

Edit: Trying to mix a drama and action might have been a good idea if it wasn't so poorly executed. All this ends up being is just a sloppy mix of out of place emotional drama and out of place cheesy action scenes.

Damn dude, you must avoid some pretty shitty films to actually feel robbed after seeing Hanna of all things. How many films do you see per year? 1 or 2?

I had to look up the list of movies for last year and it came out to about 12 movies. I think just seeing the rating on rottentomatoes at 86% set my expectations for the movie at least being ok. I went in expecting something like The Fighter I guess, an artistic and intelligent film playing on your emotions. While I didn't really enjoy the fighter I could appreciate what it was trying to do. With Hanna I just felt insulted when the movie was trying to do fast paced action or dramatic camera shots.

Edit: Maybe I just turned into some kind of a weird movie hipster because the last movies I can recall enjoying are Machete, Drive Angry and Repo The Genetic Opera. Also I totally blocked out watching Tron Legacy a month ago. Yeah that was a pretty bad movie but I guess it didn't bother me because I went in expecting mediocrity.

Did you at least like the
single camera shot action scene with Eric Bana
? I thought it was pretty intense. And Hanna's
escape scene with the Chem. Bros soundtrack
was kick-ass.

I think I appreciated the action scene on some level but the whole time I also was bothered by how out of place it was. It made me think of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qJaADSMkzY
when I saw the merry go round I thought about how entirely unnecessary it would be to the whole scene for it to start spinning but that it was going to happen anyway because action movie logic dictated it so.

The chase scene reminded me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQM6MgOx8g8&#t=0m24s

Maybe its just me and I hit a pop culture/media saturation point. Because I think there are a few other scenes in the movie where instead of watching it I was thinking about where else have I seen/experienced something similar. Or maybe I was just bored.

Edit: Reading all those reviews hailing this as some kind of brilliant infusion of intelligence into an action movies really bothers me. I could understand such praise for Inception. But Hanna does neither action or intelligence or emotional drama well.

Damn, totally agree about that Shoot 'Em Up reference. The last act is when things really fell apart for me. I think the second act was the best.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. The soundtrack was really good. The last act wasn't as good as the other two.

This. Movie kind of lost some steam towards the end. An example of a film that had all the makings of an instant classic but just seemed to miss that certain something to make it stand out despite the brilliant cast. Still wouldn't mind seeing a director's cut though that is assuming one actually exists.

I really enjoyed this movie. A few problems with it. I didn't really enjoy the escape scene although it wasn't horrible. Just didn't strike me as amazing with all the quick cuts. Also felt that the beginning of the movie after she gets outside, those very lingering desert shots I feel can only be descibed as masturbatory. It's also slow to get going but that was ok with me.

Some stuff I thought was great about the movie:

So often in these types of movies, it's the entire government is after the girl with seemingly no boundaries. I thought it was very cool that Marissa goes off book to track Hanna down and it feels much more realistic where there are things that she just can't do as a government agent. Feels like there are legit boundaries to the powers after Hanna and that is much better for me.

I also thought the action was awesome although there isn't as much as I expected. I really, really liked that the action felt more realistic than normal super agent fare. Like even though Hannah is enhanced she can't easily take on more than one guy. It makes her feel human. Same with Dad. He's good enough to take more than one guy but it's pretty challenging for him and he definitely takes some lumps. I thought that fight scene in the subway type area with the yellow poles was fucking off the hook.

Overall, I loved the movie but I can see where other people would have significant problems with it. I loved that the fairytale references, especially to Red Riding Hood, were in there but weren't over-the-top overt. I also thought the setpieces that used were absolutely great. Really good locations in that movie.

Oh, and obviously that sound design was just phenomenal. They nailed it perfectly.

Anyone else think the audio mix had too much bass? When I seen it it felt like too much of the audio was going to the subwoofer or it was overdone. Like when Anna is running on top the of the transport containers.

I didn't notice any issues like that. Maybe an issue in your theatre?

It loses some steam near the end but I definitely didn't want more exposition or backstory in there. The little amount they gave to her origins was serviceable enough for the plot it had. And they really didn't have time to have the emotional apology last that long because well...they didn't have much time. Government's on their ass.

Mostly though I like how this can pretty much be summarized as a Fairytale with guns and kung fu. It's pretty much a story about childlike innocence in an adult world. Some Hansel and Gretel shit. Except Gretel can snap a dude's neck.

Super stylized too. And also lol walkabout reference.
