Alien Isolation didn't suffer all that bad a fate. Shit sold 2mil copies, didn't it?
I remember a really fuckin dumb early review that called it a "Locker Simulator" or some such bullshit, but the game reviewed pretty well, and it sold pretty well, and is fairly well regarded now, isn't it?
Unfortunately a good chunk of the 2 million sold were from discounted copies. Sega wanted more sales, upwards to 3-4 million, as they wanted it to be a true AAA release with AAA sales numbers, and 2 million (while respectable) wasn't enough for them. It's gotten more respect now, yeah, but not enough to get another game going. Creative Assembly has doubled down on their RTS titles, and much of the staff that worked on AI left. In a perfect world, we'd be getting a follow up to Isolation alongside Covenant.
Though with that said, I do like that Isolation is considered 'canon' (like that matters), and is referenced a lot in the Alien novels and comics we've gotten since (Alien: Defiance from Dark Horse is rad), so I'm glad it's living on in some way.
