When they gonna bring back the goddamn pulse rifle?
Its the type of fan service that doesn't detract from a movie and if anything helps make a better interconnected, coherent universe.
It was revealed during the
Alien Facebook page's silly death bracket-thing that the head security person of Covenant, Lope, served the Colonial Marines (with dates that break continuity, heh), but that might just be some extended universe easter egg type shit (like the Blade Runner reference in the Prometheus Blu-ray) if it's not referenced in the film. Even if we do hear "Colonial Marines" muttered or some signifier in the film proper, it might just be the lightest homage w/ no Pulse Rifle. We'll find out soon.
But Scott's got a grip on the series right now and I don't think he cares for an interconnected, coherent universe (cue Prometheus jokes!) with the joints he didn't make. For example, it's very clear he doesn't give a fuck about jelling well with AvP going by this
Lindelof anecdote.

You said nothing is an accidental reference, so is there a possible intentional Alien Vs. Predator reference in that the Weylands are always seeking eternal life?
You mean in terms of Charles Bishop Weyland? Look, as to what's canon and what's not canon, for me as a screenwriter it's transcended by Ridley as a director. Here's the thing. Ridley invented this. He created this Alien universe. He birthed it out of his own heart and soul. So he gets to do whatever it is he wants to do and he wanted to use Weyland as a conduit in the story, and was not interested at all when I said to him, ”You know, Weyland was a character in one of the Alien Vs. Predator movies," he just sort of looked at me like I had just slapped him in the face. That was the beginning, middle and end of all Alien Vs. Predator references in our story process.
That's just the obviously non-canon AvP, but still. I truly think that Scott is making a point to not significantly acknowledge Alien films he didn't work on in his prequel films, while
at least not retconning Aliens out of respect of its status (and money-making opportunities, like by some chance the Blomkamp's Aliens flick Scott's producing happens). I think it's unlikely we'll ever get something as explicit as having Aliens' Queen in a Scott directed film. Scott will return to his and his previous teams' old ideas and create his own new thing, almost exclusively.
But I don't work with Scott and haven't seen Covenant, so this is just my interpretation and I could be wrong. The return to the Alien branding and Scott bringing back the beast after adamantly stating that it was cooked threw me off. So yeah. There might be that big ol' Shaw Queen waiting for me in Covenant, as people like to speculate, and future Scott prequels could gravitate more towards the popular Aliens.
