The production ruins Moth Into Flame. The song's 50% butt rock, 50% cool but the cool parts are dulled by the bland sound.

+ Awful lead guitar work. I think if Kirk left the band and wasn't replaced, nobody would notice at this point.

I think any other song on Ride the Lighting is more quintessential than Fade to Black outside of maybe Call of Ktulu if we're really going to start going on about whos the bigger fan or whatever it is you're trying to argue. Most of my Metallica listening time is consumed by the first four albums and Live Shit: Binge and Purge 89'
I do not and have never cared for Fade to Black and if I was going to pick a song that represents the band it sure wouldn't be that

If you're listing Ride songs the least quintessential Metallica song on there is escape. Not even the band like it. It was their first attempt at something mainstream.

The title's bugging me. It's so on the nose. I feel like their idea of restraint is not adding "...if you know what I mean ;)" at the end.

I think both the title and the cover occupy the same "why are you still doing this?", really naff space that moder Metallica seems to have such a great handle on. I think it's increasingly difficult to take them seriously with stuff like that.

But I do like Hardwired quite a bit, and excited to give Moth Into Flame a go. Cautiously optomistic for the album.

Blasphemer!

You guys are so mean to Kirk. He already looks sad and fragile all the time, don't ruin his self-esteem.

He probably wouldn't be as hated if he didn't take Dave's place, but it's not like he tricked ave into leaving the band. Dude was a major ass couldn't even hold his own band together between albums.

Fucking love Dave to death, but he does got some anger issues. If he has them now imagine back then where he (and everybody else tbf) was drunk 24/7.

And although I agree Moth into Flame's solo is not that good, I like Hardwired's. Kirk is very hit or miss imo

Yeah, I was pretty meh on Hardwired, but Moth Into Flame sounds like something right off of And Justice For All. Not the biggest Metallica fan, but this could go down as one of their classic albums when all is said and done.

Blackened is the end
Winter it will send
Throwing all you see
Into obscurity

Death of Mother Earth
Never a rebirth
Evolution’s end
Never will it mend

Never

Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Color our world blackened

Blistering of earth
Terminate its worth
Deadly nicotine
Kills what might have been

Callous frigid chill
Nothing left to kill
Never seen before
Breathing nevermore

Never

Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Color our world blackened

Blackened

Opposition...contradiction...premonition...compromise
Agitation...violation...mutilation...planet dies

Darkest color
Blistered earth
True death of life

Termination...expiration...cancellation...human race
Expectation...liberation...population...lay to waste

See our mother
Put to death
See our mother die

Smoldering decay
Take her breath away
Millions of our years
In minutes disappears

Darkening in vain
Decadence remains
All is said and done
Never is the sun

Never

Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
Fire
Is the outcome of hypocrisy
Darkest potency
In the exit of humanity
Color our world blackened

Blackened

Mustaine did some great shit after Metallica.

Moth Into Flame is exactly what I want from Metallica. Combine the heavy and thrashy roots with some melodic sections and add vocal harmonies to the mix (which were missing from Death Magnetic). I'm super excited for this album.

Mustaine is also a terrible lead player. He skills lie in Riffage and song structure much like Hetfield.

I don't bare Kirk any malice because he replaced Mave. I just think he's lazy and can't really be bothered anymore.

If I had a time machine, the first place I would go is back to see the Seattle '89 show. The speed and intensity they played at that show is unmatched.

You know I didn't feel Hardwired the first time I listened to it but the more I listen to it the more I like it. The riff is infectious.

It would be clever of Metallica to go full circle and have this album contain timed DRM that will make it unplayable for legitimate buyers in ~18 months.

I didn't know you can hate Kirk. He is amazing. Looks a bit like Mr. Miyagi now.

He used to be so good but now he mostly plays the exact same pentatonic filler licks saturated by wah in new solos with some exceptions, and sometimes over great melodic areas in old ones lives. He's best when he has to sit down and make a solo instead of improvising.

I don't know how he got worse in the past 2 decades. Arthritis maybe, but it shouldn't affect his compositions.

I think he just doesn't care all that much. I follow him on Facebook and the vast majority of his posts are either about surfing or old horror movies. I don't think he has ever been included too much in the songwriting process; if you listen to demos, most of them have some sort of guitar solo that James does and then Kirk comes in later and adds a touch up.

I saw them on that tour and they were pretty phenomenal. It was their first big US headlining tour so I think they felt they had a lot to prove with the loss of Cliff and being called sellouts for the One video.

There were some good solos on Death Magnetic. I can see where you're coming from though. Maybe it has something to do with songwriting. It seems like the new album is mostly written by Hetfield/ Ulrich which is a good sign. Everyone was involved in the writing process on St. Anger and Death Magnetic. Metallica is at it's best when Hetfield and Ulrich are responsible for the songs.

Edit: My opinion of course

I think everyone wrote on this album but Kirk, because of Kirk's phone conundrum

Heh.

This may seem strange but I miss the old cool song names. The new names are so...strange.

Master of Puppets, Fade to black, Blackened, One, Enter Sandman, Fuel, Bleeding me, Wherever I may roam, Welcome home..., ..and Justice for all. Man, they have so many great names. Am I the only one?

Oh and why the hell is everyone forgetting Struggle within? I love this song, the intro is killer.

Absolutely terrible. It's just generic thrash. Do these guys not get bored making the same records and songs over and over?

Is this sarcasm? Metallica is probably one of the most creative bands out there. They make music they love...not music for the fans. And this is why I love them. I like every album. Sure, some are better than others but still...Metallica isn't trying to copy the old days like so many old bands. They always try something new.

Is *this* sarcasm? You've got to be fucking kidding me with this post. They're a musically insular band who just write boring metal riffs and splurge out corny butt-rock vocals. They're way past their prime and just regurgitate cookie-cutter thrash metal time and time again. How is this creative? Heavy music has evolved - it's not the 1980's anymore.

What in the ....well, opinions I guess.
