Harmonix announces new RB DLC: Arctic Monkeys, Avenged Sevenfold and Foo Fighters

I never understood why GH had the spastic DLC schedule it did.

I just don't think Activision realized how important it was until Rock Band had too much of a stranglehold on that audience for them to chip away at it to any successful degree. Their community support also didn't really happen until too late, and well after Harmonix made it a Friday morning ritual for a lot of people to hit up the RB forums for the DLC announcement.

Seems like the perfect time to ask - I'll be having a party in the next few weeks and wanted to try 7 player RB3 for the first time. I have the following gear:

GH: World Tour guitar (with 2 USB ports on the dongle)
GH2 guitar
GH:WT drums
RB3 keyboard
GH:WT microphone

What else do I need to get some 7 player action going on my PS3? I only have 2 USB ports so I'm guessing I'll need a 4 port dongle? Will any type work or do I need a specific one?

-You "may" want to plug the GH mic in, and go into your PS3's Settings > Accessories > Audio Devices menu and check the sensitivity for the microphone a bit. RB3 is a bit flaky about reading pitches off them otherwise.

-Not sure how the PS3 works, but since the GH:WT guitar, drums, and the RB3 keyboard are wireless that leaves your dongle ports open for at least the GH2 guitar, and a microphone. If the PS3 has any USB ports on the system itself spare then just plug those in, otherwise you may need to invest in a bigger dongle. Is the dongle you currently own officially licensed for RB or third party? Also, the wireless PS3 controller is used to change the mics setting and navigation so that won't take up a port.

- Up to 3 mics can be used at once in RB3, so yeah, bigger dongle may be required depending on if the PS3 has numerous USB ports on it.

I'm a 360 user so I got this baby bundled in with my original Rock Band "band in a box" bundle...

Well, this is weird. And awesome. For a moment I can pretend the genre never died and I'm still in my early 20s. Heartwarming stuff. :)

I might just buy one of those songs to bring back some memories. Hell, maybe I'll organize a Rock Band night with some friends. A couple of them actually expressed interest in playing Rock Band again recently.

Also: next-gen Rock Band please (compatible with old guitars and songs, of course)!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Activision/Neversoft actually also made their DLC take longer to make.

Guitar Hero DLC after 3 had custom animation, for example, while every Rock Band just has a premade palette of animations each song can use, and they could actually autogenerate all the animation for a song, while Neversoft had to animate each song.

So while this gave Guitar Hero an advantage in having the actual choreo for certain songs, the downside is they had to have more people and time involved in song creation. If Rock Band wanted to do callbacks to the actual music video for a song, they had to do hacks using their ability to focus the camera and use filters, like this.

This is incredible. When all remnants of other music games have been seemingly wiped from digital existence, Rock Band rises from the ashes with new content. I lamented how Guitar Hero and DJ Hero died, along with their music stores. How Lips not only removed their store, but also their leaderboards. And how the Karaoke app existed for a mere two years before disappearing. I gotta thank Harmonix for continuing to support their best franchise. And part of me wants to thank the Foo Fighters because it seems like they can't release an album without having at least a song in Rock Band for it.

It's so weird to see the singer do the custom animation, and then it keeps cutting back to that horribad drummer animation. I'm glad they finally got their shit together for GH5 for the drummers, but yeesh.

I wish my guitar controller still worked. Rockband was my go-to drunk game for a long time, I miss it. I would still play it, but buying a controller now is too expensive with them all being discontinued.

My body is so ready for a RB4, so ready.

Speaking of animations, I remember back when "What You Want" by Evanescense came out for RB3 it had this humorous glitch that caused the female singer model to wrench her arm back and do the windmill over and over each and every time the in-game camera cut back to her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzzAxVkUjwU

Satch Boogie used to be glitched out in RB3 too

It just keeps escalating

I also found a bug that still exists where you can force the game to always load a female singer, regardless if the song is flagged as being sung by a male singer. I obviously kept my band glitched that way after I figured it out.

I'm so hyped for this!
Granted, not the songs I'd choose, but more or less psyched that it means Current Gen RB!!!

I dont own as many songs as some of you, only 300+, but spent a lot of time playing RB1,2 and 3.

Cant wait for some more news!!

Be thankful you didn't lose yourself to the void! 1,300 songs so far, and with the new DLC, that number may keep rising!

Is anyone having trouble getting the new songs? Only the Foo Fighters is showing up on EU XBL

Yup, could only download the Foo Fighters track. Got 99% on Expert Guitar (That fucking outro swell) and an easy 100% on Expert Bass. Not bad considering the 2 year hiatus, but a long time out of a game really does effect your performance, felt like I was going to fall out of rhythm multiple times!

EU too? I wonder if it's a region issue

A pay-as-you go model for this gen would be cool I think, similar to Xbox's Karaoke app: pay $5 for 2 hours of unlimited access or something.

But yes, more Rock Band please!

Is there a quick way to download all the songs purchased in rock band? Bought an Xbox 360 yesterday in part because I have been wanting to play rb and to play some games with my nephew.

I probably have 4-500 songs purchased so doing each one individually would be a pain.

Glad RB finally got some arctic monkeys.

Sadly, no. The only thing that helps if you bought a lot of the packs, but there's no mass re-download option that consoles offer, sensible as it would be.

Go through the website, and look through you transaction history and triggering it there. That's faster than going through the console.

All my good RB gear is across the country in Oregon, but it felt good to do a true blind run of a song in Blitz for the first time in 2 years

Totally aware of the Marketplace issue with only the Foo Fighters track showing. I flagged it this morning and we have our top lady on the case -- hope it's cleared up shortly!

So happy to see so much enthusiasm here for both the new content and the franchise. <3

I just realized that going off Harmonix's usual 5-year contract, any songs signed for the Rock Band 3 disc will expire in 9 months.

It generally holds up since we lost the Lego Rock Band export 5 years after the game came out. Rock Band 2's export expired as well, roughly 5 years after it's release.

Impressed Foo's song doesn't have keys, that harpsichord sounds really fun.

I understand charting pro keys is much more complex and a bit time wasting but I expected a chart for standard keys (does the game even support that?).

Does this mean Harmonix are phasing out keys?

Still buying all 3 to support the community, bring it on!

I don't believe Rock Band 3 has an option to have just a standard keys chart with no pro key chart.

The only instrument variants the game supports as being able to be shown as 'missing' are Vocal Harmonies and Pro Guitar/Bass, due to the nature of how they were implemented. The game will even assume every song has Pro Drums support. If a song doesn't have Pro Drums charting, it'll just make every note a cymbal.

We'll have to wait for them to answer it directly, but keys not being charted can happen due to the masters not having separated keys.

Yeah they mentioned in the live stream that the Foo Fighters song didn't have keys but they didn't really say why it didn't. Would be curious to know if it's because of some future plans.......

Interesting.....I wonder if that is why they are getting the ball rolling now on some DLC. Maybe they are trying to get Rock Band 4 out before the 9 months expires so they can make sure a RB3 export is offered....hmmm.....

current leaderboard stats for Something From Nothing for the 360:

Blitz leaderboard entries: 69

RB3:

Band scores: 597
Vocal scores: 69
Harmonies scores: 21
Guitar scores: 361
Bass Scores: 105
Drum scores: 90
Pro Drums: 116

Should we get a next-gen Rock Band, unless they find a way to let my old stuff import from 360 over to PS4, I will be ignoring the series. I invested far too much money and I'm happy to bust out the 360 if I ever need to play though.

But... I'd pay a -reasonable- fee to do that import.

You can definitely do it with some metadata fudging after the fact, but they never did it officially and Magma doesn't allow for it.

Yeah, I originally had it in there but thought it made the post too unwieldy - basically, bullshit it so it works, but there's no 'nice' way of doing it.

Either way, I don't think Pro Keys is that much trouble to chart that dropping keys support from a song that you can have keys for would save you much time. I believe they've always said Pro Guitar was always the most labor intensive charting, something said on stream that it took more time than charting all the other instruments combined. So they probably have a good reason for not having it here.

This is exciting news and it might give me a reason to dust off the guitar. I'm hopeful we'll see some new Metallica or Aerosmith. They did release some of the latter back towards the tailend of their DLC from back in the day. I want me some Dude Looks Like a Lady.

Both "Shepherd Of Fire" and "R U Mine?" are both finally up on the xbox dashboard to purchase now! "R U Mine?" is a blast to play on Guitar and bass. Bouncy, and plenty of movement up and down the fretboard. Nice and balanced. Better than the Foo Fighters song.

Here's hoping we get "Brianstorm" sometime in the future!
