Has any recent Anime surpassed Trigun/Cowboy Bebop?

All I see is moe everything now, and am constantly reminded of how awesome the late 90s were for anime.

We got Trigun, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, etc.

Has anything in recent years matched or surpassed these gems? Ive been out of the loop for a while.

Edit: I get it, Im the only one who liked Trigun in the whole world.

Samurai 7? It's 2004, so ymmv on it being 'recent.' Also, Death Note until
L dies
.

Also, Evangelion is overrated and not that great.

Is Trigun supposed to be good? I'm a huge Bebop fan but Trigun never seemed like it would be something I'd like (at face value at least).

Edit: nm, thread answered this question. Thanks GAF.

In all seriousness, nah.

Slam Dunk surpassed those two and then a few years into the 2000s, Major did the same thing. I really want to watch Princess Nine...

Lain is garbage. Nowhere near the level of Bebop.

Can't think of any other anime that has reached the level of success of Cowboy Bebop as a gateway anime.

There have been a few anime in recent years that have surpassed them, sure. I personally would put The Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong a few rungs above Trigun, at least.

Hunter x Hunter 2011 for me, my favorite anime series in recent memory. I am a Shonen buff though, so it hit all the right spots.

The first half of the show is completely awful, when a certain character shows up around the halfway point and it gets a lot better (You'll know instantly because the entire tone of the show does a complete 180). The last 5 or so episode in particular are really good. There is one particular moment in the 3rd-to-last episode that is amazing and probably my favorite scene in any work of fiction ever. But then the terrible ending sorta sours you on the whole show.

Everybody at my job keeps talking about One Punch Man. So since Trigun isn't all that good imo, that one likely fits your description.

Trigun came out that same time as Cowboy Bebop and has similar western themes, but that's all I would compare lol.

There are so many anime that have surpassed Bebop (never saw Trigun so I cant say), but Id easily have

Guilty Crown
BLast of Tempest
Seraph of the End
M3
Free!

as anime that easily surpassed the inferior storytelling and drama that one finds in Bebop. All five are much better stories, more visually and musically pleasing (no bland instrumental OP's here), and flawless character designs and development.

SEL and CB are leagues ahead of Trigun...

But anyway, I really like Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong for recent anime. For something more shonen, Hunter x Hunter is good.

Thanks! I might check it out at some point. I'm somewhat of an anime noob so there are too many shows I haven't watched yet.

If we are taking super recent, One Punch, Flowers of Evil and School Live are great
(First 19min of School Live is a huge struggle to get through, but it's soooo worth it)

Though I feel the one that had broken into the mainstream like TriGun and Bebop would have to be One Punch

Trigun is thoroughly mediocre. It barely even qualifies as interesting until the backstory episode.

Even Bebop is overrated. It takes a hell of a long time to become anything more than a decent episodic anime with an unusually excellent soundtrack.

To actually answer your question OP, I think Ping Pong is an excellent recent anime. Probably one of my favorites.

Monster is a little older (newer than the timeframe you're talking about), but also very good.

Monster is a great suggestion. +1 to that.

Trigun >>>>>>>>>>> Bebop

Did u just underrate yoko kanno

Ping Pong The Animation was probably the BEST series I've watched in years though. I enjoy stuff like Hunter x Hunter more, but Ping Pong simply had quality character development, drama, and story telling, with a great art style to boot. Was so worth watching. Shit made me never look at Ping Pong the same way again, it is a true athletic sport.

Planetes and Ghost in the Shell aren't recent, but just in case they aren't covered by your "etc", you should check those out.

EL OH EL. Guilty Crown was straight garbage. It's only redeeming qualities were looking and sounding nice

Attack on Titan. People are going to seeth at me saying so, but I could talk to people who barely understood what anime was about that show. Absolutely insane popularity.
