Has any recent Anime surpassed Trigun/Cowboy Bebop?

I never find Trigun or Cowboy Bebop to be some pinnacle of animations. They are just another anime entries, like Doraemon, Evagelion, Dragonball Z, Haruhi. It's like claiming LOTR is the greatest book ever published.

Cowboy Bebop is the pinnacle of serialized anime, and yeah it's no Citizen Kane, but that's anime for you.

Why is the Big O rarely brought up when talking about these best oldies debate. Sure it got weird at the end but it was a hell of a lot better than w.e the f evangelions ending was.

Such beautiful and wonderful garbage though

Nah, I mean, I get people try and act like they appreciate it for how awful it is when in reality they actually enjoy it, but Sword Art Online is, like, the Steve Harvey's GAF account making threads of reddit reposts of anime.

I had issues with Ultimate. Yes, the original REALLY dropped the ball badly with its own ending....but watching Ultimate with its toned down colour scheme, and without the awesome soundtrack just made me a bit sad.

There are things in the other show that would be missed, especially the less rushed pacing, but overall it isn't as good.

Trigun is thoroughly mediocre. It barely even qualifies as interesting until the backstory episode.

Even Bebop is overrated. It takes a hell of a long time to become anything more than a decent episodic anime with an unusually excellent soundtrack.

Ok, since one of the best anime series ever is overrated to you, then which other is?

In just the last few years, Mushishi, Flowers of Evil, Ping Pong, and Princess Kaguya are all shows that can stand tall with Cowboy Bebop as all-time classics of the medium.

Right on the first page, people with anime avatars are poo-pooing Cowboy Bebop.

That's the last straw weaboos. I am declaring a normie fatwah on Animegaf.
DTL is a radical BL extremist, and does not represent what AnimeGAF stands for.

Samurai Champloo is a good compliment to Cowboy Bebop.

Intead of jazz & space its Hip Hop & Edo Period Japan.

Death Note has its moments as well.

Kids on the Slope was pretty good...

And I think Yakitate!! Japan was also released after Bebop :P
I love that dumb show!

Thanks guys for the suggestions !

I've seen a lot of anime but i also haven't seen some good series. I often think about subscribing to Crunchy Roll for some of the goodies.

I personally don't consider Bebops character progression lacking, the episodic stories decent to good and the overarching story rather weak. As such I don't hold it in nearly as high regards even though the OST really is phenomenal.

In part it's also because I prefer a continuing story over the episodic structure. However, Mushishi demonstrated to me that I can enjoy that too, if exceedingly well done.

To list some shows I personally put above Cowboy Bebop:

Shin Sekai Yori
Hyouka
Dennou Coil
KareKano
Evangelion
Kyousougiga
Mawaru Penguindrum

They're all vastly different types of anime so a direct comparison would be rather pointless.

Steins;Gate
Code Geass
Ghost in the Shell
Monogatari Series
Haruhi Suzumiya
Clannad
Anohana
Fate/Zero

It's a short OVA series with great animation, like clips from this show look like the intros of other shows.
Problem is that it took forever to release, and it never had a proper ending.

...And why isn't Big O being talked about? The Adult Swim co-produced season 2, that's why.

All I see is moe everything now, and am constantly reminded of how awesome the late 90s were for anime.

We got Trigun, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, etc.

Has anything in recent years matched or surpassed these gems? Ive been out of the loop for a while.

Edit: I get it, Im the only one who liked Trigun in the whole world.

Shinsekai Yori (From the New World, 2012-2013) is up there with some of those shows, imo.

It doesn't have nostalgia or anything like that to fall back on because it is pretty recent.

Steins;Gate is great too.

I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop because there's absolutely no way that the anime can surpass the track Space Lion.

I'm just afraid to watch it and the show won't be nearly as good as that track. It's that good.

Hard to say whether or not it's been surpassed as Bebop is so amazing, but there have been some damn good animes since then, most have already been mentioned, some great lists. I'd reiterate Space Brothers, Mushishi, Monster, Gintama, FMAB & HXH though, All amazing and post-noughties.

That song plays in one of my favorite eps in Bebop (Jupiter Jazz Part 2). You should really watch the full series sometime, won't be disappointed. Bebop is one of those series that has aged and will age really well.

IMO, Cowboy Bebop was the best anime from 1998-2006. Baccano surpassed it and is still on top. Shinsekai Yori and Steins;Gate both came close though..

Plenty.

Samurai Champloo
FLCL
Shirobako
Hunter X Hunter 2011
FMA Brotherhood
Ping Pong
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure 2012 / Stardust Crusaders
One Punch Man
Hyouka
Madoka Magica
Gintama
Baccano
Steins;Gate
Chihayafuru
Gurren Lagann
Monogatari series
etc.

Great job animeGAF. Shut Trigun down. It is nowhere near the levels of CB. I think at the time a lot of people were just getting into anime and this so happened to be their first real experience. So I think nostalgia has a lot to play on this. As for alternatives for the others, as far as I care:

One Punch Man. Seriously.

It's that good. Don't deny yourself. The pacing of the show, the beauty of the animation, the subtlety of the movement and the voice acting.

Untouchable.

Have any recent songs surpassed Blitzkrieg Bop/Bohemian Rhapsody?
Have any recent movies surpassed An Extremely goofy Movie/Spirited Away?
have any recent games surpassed Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights/COD4?

One of these things is not like the other OP, trigun holds a special place in my heart too but it isn't even fit to eat the scraps falling off of the tables at the Banquet that is Cowboy Bebop

I think there are two things going on here:

In terms of impact and how pervasive a series was I'd say Trigun and Cowboy Bebop were absolutely on the same level.

In terms of overall quality and cohesion though, Cowboy Bebop is leagues better. (Although I do love Trigun very much.)

Anyway, OP, I don't think we've had a breakout, anime hit like that in a long time. Closest I can think of would probably be Attack on Titan maybe.

Regading anime that match the quality of Bebop though, we've had numerous stellar titles, ranging from different genres. Depends on what you're looking for. Although it's not anything new, safest bet would be Samurai Champloo if you haven't checked that out already.

In terms of stuff that acts as great gateway shows:

Death Note
Baccano!
Attack on Titan
Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

All of them came out years after the stuff in OP, and I'd say all can be just as effective in getting people into anime. Awesome shows worth watching in their own right (and they all have fantastic English dubs, too).

Cowboy Bebop is still something very special, though. A stunning work of art with style and substance.

GitS:SAC and Eureka 7 both passed Trigun/CB IMHO... but nothing from the last couple of years

Rurouni Kenshin Kyoto Arc is still the Goat though
