Has anyone here had experience with relocation assistance with a job?

I'm still doing some research mind you, but out of curiosity, have you ever deliberately applied for a job that was completely out of your area but your employer was willing to help or compensate you in the process?

I understand it usually makes more sense to move to a desired area with your own money, but because of the current pandemic, it's impossible to just pick one preferable location when you want to keep the options open to all of them.

I did get an offer to move to a major US city with my then current employer. I checked the company policy on payments and relocation support and it was just not realistic and way out of date. It was something like, we'll pay for your hotel for two weeks up to $X value per night.

However I have stayed in companies that have brought a company apartment to save on hotel costs for visiting staff and they will let relocating employees stay there which was a workable solution. When I stayed in on it was a lot of fun to chill with colleagues after hours, kinda like a student house.

What I would do now is buy a van and turn it into a stealth camper, and Gym membership for shower facilities. You'd save a ton and have a mobile home for weekends. Obviously you'd need to have a home base somewhere to keep all your actual stuff like your parents home.

I asked for mobility from my old job and just went through the whole ordeal.
My company had different packages depending on the level of seniority the person has.

I got put in touch with a relocation agency that took a AirBnb with a professional account (yes this exist)
THey held virtual visit of the flats they found for me following the requirement i had given them.
Got a whole month at my new location in a flly furnished Flat to wait for my furniture to move over.

They payed for the flight tickets, the 20m3 move with all the professional packing, everything.

The downside of all these goodies is that i had expected to start working the week end after i left the previous country.
Hit the round running.

This happened during the window of opportunity we had after the country reopened but i got very lucky.
The whole thing is really annoying no matter what. Always a pain to leave the safety of the cocoon you've built over the past years

Yep when I was looking to leave the UK and work overseas.

Had offers in Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong. All were offering relocation assistance which included a flight for me and my mrs, personal goods shipping and accommodation ranging from 1 month to 3 months.

Granted, that was 8 years ago now and not in the midst of a pandemic, but that's what you should expect as long as you're experienced and the company you're applying to is decent.

Bear in mind that most of the time when they offer assistance there is usually a clause in the contract that states you might owe the relocation expenses back to them should you resign within a certain time period (usually 6-12 months). So if you are going to make the move and accept the assistance make sure its something you want to stick with.

Idk US.

japan I got relocated, they pay the flight tickets, if you have a house and paying loan they help you pay the loan (so you don’t need to pay 2 “rents”).
air tickets to visits your family once a month.
The first year rent is payed by the company. Children education allowance if move together.

I got same offer from Singapore, China and Uk.

mostly China offers are very good. Now I’m kinda glad I never accept those Tencent offers haha

Btw I have an ex coworker who travel a lot, he always apply to other countries jobs, Australia, japan (where we met) , Thai, Vietnam, Uk.
Mostly the same. Flight tickets and apartment, also when things don’t work (6 months test) they pay air ticket back.

I had a relocation assistance package when I started my most recent job. I was only moving within the state and my family stayed put so for me it only really amounted to reimbursement for renting a truck and other travel costs. They would have arranged a moving truck to move an entire house of stuff if I had needed it though. I also got 3 days of extra vacation time to be used within the first month for setting up, but I think I only used one of them when getting a couch delivered.

I worked for a company that closed their office where I was living at the time and paid us money to move to another state. It was pretty generous and I think we had to work for 2-3 years after and not have to pay it back.
