That's probably a sign that we need to do a better job of dealing with mental health in this country (which we definitely do).

Now if a stable teenager plays this and goes on a real killing spree then we have a problem.

I think you're giving far more power to this game than it deserves. It's a very niche game that isn't going to be released on any console or any major digital distributions platform on the PC. It's release won't have any impact on gaming. Do you remember the Super Columbine Massacre game? Probably not as most people don't, and that's if they've even heard of it in the first place. But that was released in 2005, and it didn't cause any negative impact on the industry.
 
This game looks a lot like Postal 1. Even the main character is similar to Postal Dude. At least in Postal 1, the majority of the people were shooting at you, not just being "sitting ducks".
 
Shazam! Love games like this. Can't stand the main character - he comes off worse than Kratos - but I'm totally into the gore. Hope this comes out on a system I own at some point.
 
it's not worth it, devs. really not worth it. hurting video games more than helping. no matter how insignificantly.

That being said, I'm kind of glad someone has the balls to go this far. I do not believe there should be limits in the world of gaming, and exploring the concept of an unapologetic spree killer (albeit an over the top one) that isn't totally tongue-in-cheek like Postal is definitely not something I was expecting.

Might play it just for the novelty, but I'm not a huge fan of the genre, so we'll see.

The first game was most definitely not tongue-in-check, you play as a dude trying to cleanse a city believing they've all gone insane.

Conversely, what if an unstable teenager plays this and it manages to work as an outlet, preventing an actual killing spree that he/she may have done otherwise? That's something that needs more research, and even then it's going to be a case by case thing.

Edit: Though IIRC, there are more studies showing aggression in games raises aggression for said unstable people. Still, I think many games before this one would be the breaking point for them.

That is a pretty solid argument. Did it get the same treatment by the games media, as we may start seeing them pick up this story to get the shock value and viewers to their article. Polygon has already made an article on it, so others may do the same.

Does the fact that Zombies would "kill off society" provide enough reason to enjoy a twin stick shooter like Dead Nation or Nation Red? Of course it doesn't. Zombies offer different mechanics that make a game more challenging, but that has nothing to do with the moral background.
Hatred looks like it's going to be boring after two minutes, but nobody's making that point for some reason. It's too important to point out that you're shooting innocent polygons.

Here you are pretty much killing innocent people who are trying to run away, and if you can't recognize the moral difference in choosing to shoot people versus shooting zombies I pity you.

I felt really bad after I drove over that guy in GTA V. But it only happened once.

You aren't offering an argument even, you are just saying that everyone that opposes this game on moral grounds is spouting bullshit. I can see why you might enjoy this game, and I hope it relieves you of something, because your arguments reflex this game. They are both completely senseless.

Why was this brought back into a new page, it was already confirmed tat the shirt was not neo nazi and is about a group that was against the spread of communism into Poland. This was found within like 2 posts of the picture of the tweet.

Hope you're right. It would be amusing if it lampooned narcissistic misanthropy. I can't imagine it's supposed to be taken seriously. I'd have less puckish, roguish fun with this game if that character is being played straight.
 
Another way to put this, othering the victims of player violence in video games is important to people. Just like in real life. And the lack of reflection of that phenomenon is also just like in real life.

Confirms my initial thought that this will be primarily marketed to teenage "I hate all humans alike" edgemasters.

Game looks great from gameplay perspective - I really like isometric shooters - but also looks way too hard to stomach for me and the main character doesn't do anything for me. Gotta agree to the Polygon article on him, regarding his trailer monologue.

Instead Ill be looking forward to The Hongkong Massacre.
 
Wow, that looks terrible. It almost seems to be a straw man set up so that people can trot it in front of humanity after the next tragedy and say "look what kids are playing!" Disgusting.

I can't object to this violence when I have previously enjoyed games like Hitman and Mortal Kombat. It is personally a little too extreme for me, but it would be hypocritical of me to condemn its existence or any individual that does find enjoyment from this game.
 
I have zero faith in the devs, but what this really needs is a twist: the player character is not the killer, but one of the unarmed victims.

Man, Source Filmmaker is used for a LOT of porn. I somehow doubt Epic can or will stop people from using it for that.

(Also... there's already porn games using UE4, believe it or not.)

The only studies showing an increase in aggression only show it for a short time after playing... which can easily be explained by heightened adrenaline levels from playing an action-heavy game. There is otherwise no real effect on a person's temperament outside of the game.

It was a bit different with that game because it was just a freeware title that someone made and put on the net. It wasn't until a year after its release that the gaming press found out about it and started writing articles about the game. It went from having 10k downloads in the entire year to more than 30k in less than a month once the press were talking about it. But it received a lot of negative press and it was also dropped from a gaming festival.

Personally, I feel like the industry could use this game. The controversies that unwind after its release could move us to a more interesting and, ultimately, better place. Especially if it sells.

I wasn't expecting much when I clicked on that link in the OP... but the video left me legit shook. A disturbance I haven't felt since Mortal Kombat in the 90's... and I was a kid back then. People's responses to that game were just as guttural back then as many are being now in regards to this game, but I don't think anyone can deny that Mortal Kombat ultimately helped grow this industry.

I really hope this doesn't get canned.
 
Thinking about it, these guys might be genius. They made an ultraviolet game for the only sake of violence. As you see by most of the people in this thread even (including me)- most people that enjoy violent games find this too extreme for them.

By creating something that the media believes that games represent in its purest form, these guys inadvertently are showing that gamers and the people that enjoy games are not massmurdering psychopaths.

Maybe I am looking too much into it.

But personally, killing anything in a game doesn't bother me. It may hit me emotionally, but it does not get to me morally. I am old enough and adult enough to be able to differentiate between pixels on a screen and real people. For the people that mention teenagers may play this- teenagers SHOULD not be playing this game. But that is different issue entirely.
 
I don't see a problem with this video game existing, and I don't understand the hate.

At the same time, i personally feel kind of disgusted with the trailer, and it doesn't really make want the game.

But, why shouldn't it exist?

I would say more, even if it's made by a psycho, a neonazi or fucking hitler himself; I think there is still value in it.
