There's so many amazing vocaloid songs with Miku singing, why they picked that English one I have no idea (unless it was the poor audio quality on the video I watched, I couldn't understand a word she was understanding if it was Japanese so that's what makes me think it's one of her newer English songs since I'm too used to Miku's Japanese at this point to not understand it).

I don't understand any of this. First of all, that song was atrocious. Why would Letterman allow that on his show? Secondly, that was the most lifeless looking "performer" I've ever seen, and I've seen Slash play drunk. Finally, do people truly like this, or is it one of those Internet "Snakes on a Plane" jokes? I can't understand how any of this can be enjoyable.

Vocaloid is a music software possessing voicebanks. These voicebanks are given personalities such as the character you see in the performances and are based off of real people's voice recordings of base syllables and such.
It's popular due to that anyone wanting to purchase the software can create their own songs/music of their own volition not restricted by the common barriers of personal vocal talent, instrumental knowledge/talent, etc.
And while I personally don't like Miku (the character shown in the Letterman show) I enjoy Vocaloid for what it is and what it enables for many to do: create music. Plus, there are some actual good songs made from the Vocaloid software, such as the one below.

Yeah Vocaloids are just one those things I can't really understand the appeal of.
It's basically music, and it goes down to music taste (each person has one).
The fact that they make holograms and stuff for japanese fans so they can have a waifu is pretty much irrelevant because the main focus of the program vocaloid is creating music, fan service is fan service.
Vocaloids are in simple terms a "Digital singer", in which you decide what it has to sing, how to sing it, you tune it according to your taste and things like that. You can take instrumentals and add voice to that without having to sing yourself. IT IS NOT AN ANIME, the fact that fans decided to animate the character and that some people worked on the animation so they could sell more (you know, marketing stuff $$) doesn't make it an anime, vocaloid is a voice synthesizer program and Hatsune Miku was the character in the cover of an early version of the program, and it was only made like that so it could caught japanese market easier. You know... to caught the attention of japanese market you just throw a bunch of little kawaiiiii anime girls and BOOM: $_$
The quality of the music that results from using the program depends on the ability of the user, it can vary from Justin Bieber lvl (really bad) to Mozart and such... it just depends on the person using the program. Anyway, about the english song used on Letterman show I find it really bad, so it's not a good start. Actually I don't like vocaloids in english yet, I prefer them in japanese, the English versions have to improve a lot yet. I'm not a big fan of English vocaloids atm.
Here are some nice examples (IMO) of nice vocaloid/utaloid songs: (utaloid is same type of program than vocaloid, which are voice synthesizer programs, but is free, lower quality tho). The songs listed are mostly covers made by the youtuber Kyaami (which is one of my favs tuners).
At least listen until the chorus, if you really can't find any potential appeal a person may have to it then you just dont enjoy music lol

About Hatsune Miku in particular (which is one of the first vocaloids released and one of the first that made it so popular in japan - if not the first that popularized it "massively"-, there are a lot more and there are different versions of each which have their own particular tones) I find miku goes better with electronic music, but there are other good songs of different genres, it's just that it depends on the person tuning the voice.

Thing is, after you get over the fact that it sounds really different to anything that you have heard and that it can sound very robotical (depending on the way the creator of the song wanted it to be) you can find really nice songs, of any genre, and also you can create your own songs without having any vocal ability yourself, so IMO it's a good step made by technology.

Just a correction, Miku is not the first Vocaloid released, that would be Leon and Lola, they were released in 2004 and they were English Vocaloids but they were never popular, the first Japanese Vocaloid released was Meiko also in 2004 then Kaito followed 2 years later in 2006, Miku wasn't released until 2007.

Well it's a new "technology", in some future we should have robots walking around, how would they talk? well with improved/adapted versions of current vocaloid idea they could talk. Right now it doesn't mimic humans so well but it is better than nothing, it sure will improve over time making it more and more complex and similar to humans.
All things start somewhere, new technology always start being "not so polished" but it improves. Years ago the new musical thing was that you could make an orchestra with a computer program, now there's this concept that you can add vocals to anything that you want (music mostly for now, but it will add more layers in the future for sure).
The appeal right now IMO is entertainment mostly, the fact that you can create your own stuff without having the vocal skills for it can be fun for some people, also there's the fact that there is so many different tunes and effects that you can use and can result in a fun thing idk, just need to make ur imagination run. And well some people is really good at it and can create good music with it so is a nice thing imo.
About the holograms, well it's fun to watch them, they also don't stick to law of physics so they could do lot of fun things. I suppose in the future television, movies and more will be all holograms, sounds nice to me.

Just want to share my experience when attending Miku Expo in Indonesia.
The expo in Indonesia is not really taking much space. There's stand for buying vocaloid merchandise like CD, shirt, or glow stick. Gallery showing fan art and official art. Demonstration of Miku new game in iOS (card game), Hatsune Miku statue, vocaloid introduction/tutorial video and Oculus rift demonstration.
There also seminar detailing vocaloid and piapro. I meet Hiroyuki Itoh, Crypton president there. Didn;t say hi though, since he look busy talking with staff.
The concert is solid. It feature song created by Indonesian vocaloid producer, and tuned so damn good considering Indonesia is not supported in current database AFAIK. For song list, it feature mainstream vocaloid music that is featured in Project Diva series.
The band member is great. Their solo during song is really good. Special mention to the guitarist, since he also a member of Demetori (yes, that demetori who release some of the best touhou dojin music)
I'd say, it's a very entertaining experience for me. I sure hope you guys in N.A enjoy this as well.

Hells yeah, that's my personal favorite vocaloid track. The performance of Miku was pretty bad, it didn't seem tuned right and way too high pitch. I'd have much rather seen them go with a Japanese song - "World Is Mine" was my first step down the rabbit-hole.
I'm going to the concert in NY next Friday and I'm really psyched. Really hope the other vocaloids (well, namely Luka) will be there.
