Have to create my first website - Advice needed

My first ever post on GAF from work! Always found it strange how so many GAFers post/read from work, thinking about "lost productivity" or getting paid to waste time, etc... Looks like I joined the club :\

Well, at least this is work related. One of my responsibilities here is "maintaining an up-to-date" website for the company, it's a new place and we don't have a homepage yet, so I gotta start from scratch, and here's the kicker, I've never done this before.

I practically don't know any HTML, so I'm thinking of starting with a "web-building" application (ala FrontPage), and maybe learn HTML along the way, or when the need arises. I do have experience with real programming languages and some graphic design, so I figure it shouldn't be too hard. The site doesn't have to be flashy or technically impressive or anything, something basic and elegant for a start would do the job... So I would really appreciate any advice; which application would be best to start with? How useful would knowing HTML be? Maybe recommend a good book? Any other words for a newbie?

Thanks a bunch, you guys rock.

Dreamweaver MX > Front Page

Hell, AOL Press > Front Page

(And I used AOL Press for all my sites for 5 years or so, pretty damn good and free)

You should be able to learn HTML on your own, honestly. Hit up some basic sites.

http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/

http://www.htmlgoodies.com/

http://www.echoecho.com/html.htm

http://www.w3schools.com

You could stick with Dreamweaver, that seems popular nowadays for a WYSIWYG editor, eventually you may ween yourself off and be leet and use just notepad.

Don't worry about all this CSS/DIV bullshit, stick with Tables or even Frames since you are new. Tables might get a little bit to get the hang of, however. Start slow, best I can offer, really. :P

I like working with web design and html and the such, so ask me questions if you'd like. I'm no master but I deal with what I can.

Oh, and a general rule of thumb: Fuck FireFox Users

That's about it! Enjoy!

They hired someone who has never used HTML to maintain their website?

Is your office in a garage?

Oh you dont want unhelpful replies?

OK. Use dreamweaver, it's easy.
