Heavenly Sword - IGN review (UH OH INCOMING)

5.0 Lasting Appeal
The experience is over fairly quickly. There are a number of really good unlockables to go back and earn, though you can already get them online right now.

This doesn't make any fucking sense, if there good unlockables why would you give lasting appeal a 5.0. that just doesn't make sense.

Unlockables !=wanting to play it again, revisit levels, etc etc.

Ah, damn. That's a real shame.

There's no need to be bringing up Kung Fu Chaos, though.

Typically no, but when people start talking about Uncharted possibly seeing the same fate, I think it's reasonable to remind people of the various pedigrees here.

i've played the demo about a million times and still cant get enough. i'm getting it day one. this will look majestic on my bravia

The lasting appeal one is the only section I have a "problem" with. I mean, I've seen games with shorter campaigns and no unlockables score higher there.

I imagine replayability affects it somewhat. For example, Viewtiful Joe is one of the shortest games I've ever played. It's also, however, one of the most replayable games I've ever played.

Sure there is. That's the game the company is most notable for. For most Ninja Theory is a unknown company so there needs to be some explanation or example of their prior work.

Mine at day one :D
Moreover I don't understand how combats have really the time to get repetitive in a 6-8 hours game when you have a lot of cut-scenes, playable sections with Kai with completely different gameplay and Dinasty Warriors-like battles. I finished NG Sigma a few weeks ago and it gets really repetitive... but no one complained about.
This review seems a bit weird and there's a strong feeling that the reviewer wanted to score it higher but decided to not put IGN UK in a bad position since they received a lot of critics for the review.

Wait, you're questioning why it gets repetitive with "Dynasty Warriors" type battles, and you're saying Ninja Gaiden gets repetitive?

A 5.0 for "lasting appeal" when they don't even tell you how long the game is? God of War got a 9.0 in that category and it was an 8 hour game.

Yeah, but Ninja Theory had a lot more time and a lot more money on this one. They're a much bigger developer house now, too, with lots of new people. The disappointment with HS goes to their current development effort, not what they did way back when.

IMHO.

sony bot confirmed.

I don't think that's fair (unless you're making a joke). First of all, a 7.0 is NOT a bad score, and second if he really likes the demo (not that far-fetched), why shouldn't he look forward to the whole game?

No I'm saying that we're talking about a short game, 6-8 hours, it has a lot of cut-scenes and different types of gameplay in it, Nariko's main combat style with the Heavenly Sword, Kai with its own style, DW battles which are different from the arena combats.
How can it get really repetitive with so different things to do in a 6 hours game??
What should we say about games like Ninja Gaiden? But also GOW and DMC from my experience. It's always the same thing from the beginning to the end, you just get the occasianal upgrade or new weapon/poower, and there were no problems with it.

Ok, let´s talk about pedigrees:

The Ninja Theory who made Kung Fu Chaos is totally different of the actual Ninja Theory. Same the Naughty Dog who made Way of The Warrior is a different beast from the actual Naughty Dog. Let´s keep that argument out of here, each game is a universe at itself.

Pedigree apart. I still have faith on HS, story, presentation and aesthetics. I am one of those who enjoyed the demo too, so I will buy it to check it out.

who actually expected this game will be GOTY level?

Um, a lot of people did. A lot of people were hoping for Lair. Then the negative impressions/reviews came in. Next they're looking to Heavenly Sword to be the saviour, now that's not going to happen. And moving on, now it's all about Uncharted.

But it's only year 1. Same thing happened with the 360 during its first year (although the stakes weren't as high). PDZ didn't deliver by a mile. Prey was supposed to be awesome, then it turned out to be mediocre. Chromehounds had good buzz, then it turned out to be a niche online war sim that was OK. Hell, Lost Planet was supposed to be orgasmic but, like Heavenly Sword, a short campaign and wonky game mechanics prevented it from achieving greatness. If it weren't for Gears, the 360 would be in a different place right now (IMO).

I liked the demo, i'm definitely going to rent it. Short games i don't mind (ICO was one of my favorite games from last gen), i think some devs pad their games too much, but i want to make sure the game isn't short in the sense it makes you wanting a lot more kind of short.

You have an Xbox 360 and can't wait to get Halo 3, Xbot confirmed.

magically the review becomes useless!

I dont think Heavenly Sword will be a 10/10 game, but how can you really trust someone who insults the king of action games?

Topic over.

but it seems they took a point or two because of gameplay also. graphics and sound didn't bailed out HS (on IGN) because the reviewer didn't really liked the combat system.

but we should all remember that roper is the same guy that gave god hand a 3.0. so i will never trust him for action games.

edit: oh shit, beated to the post

It sounds like a great game but just not very long - do you ever see movie critics knock a great movie because it runs for 80 minutes only? Game reviewers should stick to evaluating games based on their gameplay, content, and other attributes...length of game and lasting appeal should not be factors in the overall rating...Should mediocre games that last for 60 hours get a bump because they give more 'bang' for the dollar?

gafers are so desperate for the validation of big review scores -- more than usual, even. maybe it's a 'beginning of a console generation' thing. looking at rstein's post, it occured to me that reviewers shortchange practically all the games i like -- ridge racer, chromehounds, dead rising, lost planet, edf, armored core, senkou no ronde, the red star, ultimate g+g, motorstorm. and what does it matter, really
