So TouchBar reviews are finally coming out? Awesome!

TBH, battery life is never the big factor for me. So I wouldn't care, but still I like to have it last a few hours at least.

That said, hopefully I can get a whole year or two out of this machine I have now before I have to decide what to replace it with. Knock on wood but hopefully the only things that go wrong with it are the keyboard dying, the rubber bumper at the edge of the screen beginning to fall off because of constant gripping, two of the feet falling off and its inability to shut down without me having to force it even during an installation. Fingers crossed! For once I have a machine that didn't start to feel like it was outdated after a year or two.

So my MBP w/ Touch Bar just arrived and I'm trying to figure out the best way to transfer over my data from my Mac Pro. I've decided to start with a clean install rather than restoring from TM/clone, because my Mac Pro tower has years of built-up cruft. It's going to be painful, but probably the best idea.

I have an old tower Mac Pro, so there's no Tbolt. Apparently target disk only works on the new MBP when you have the same port on the other side, so I guess I'll need to transfer over the local net? Or can I hook up ethernet <-> ethernet directly?

Another question: the keychain. I guess my options are exporting my MP keychain and copying over, or turning on iCloud Keychain. I've been considering the latter so I have website passwords on my iOS devices, but I feel kind of nervous about it. Have y'all had good experiences with it?

iCloud Keychain is great, especially for syncing wifi passwords among your portable devices. The main flaw with it is that it can't propagate passwords into apps, just into Safari.

Tried out the non touchbar MBP.

I quite like it actually. The images are misleading to how thin it really is. I have no problem with the keyboard imo.

Regarding the 13" tbMBP vs non-tbMBP benchmark reviews, the performance gap is much smaller than I expected.

So iCloud Keychain doesn't mirror the whole local keychain (apps, certs), but just website passwords and wifi config? (i.e. I can't sign into iCloud from a new Mac and get a mirror of keychain on my old Mac) That won't be a good solution for this then..

My new MBP delivery estimate went from Thurs to Friday, feels bad man.

My 2010 is clinging to life. Crashing once a day is common. This new one can't come soon enough.

Sorry, I should have clarified: it does support apps on macOS (AirPort Utility's a good example) but not apps on iOS (again, AirPort Utility's a good example).

You can sign into iCloud from a new Mac and get a mirror of your keychain from your old Mac, yes. Though it'll take a little bit of time to sync over in the background.

Get a password manager, like 1Password. You can setup wifi sync that will allow you to synchronize your database between devices without putting that info online.

I am just really struggling with that low-end 460 GPU in a ~$3,000 laptop.

Like - everything else is great. Build quality. Screen. Keyboard and trackpad.

But the truth is, my buddy has the new 2016 Razer Blade - and it's seriously 90% there.

The keyboard is better. The trackpad is close. The 1080p screen is definitely a step down - but it's WAY better than any other 1080p panel I've seen. It has a plethora of ports (including USB-C and Thunderbolt). It has eGPU expansion. But it also has a 1060 GPU that can play every game on the market right now... and it comes in a thousand dollars cheaper.

I've owned many laptops from Apple since they switched to Intel:

the original coreduo whitebook
17" High-res
15" unibody
13" Retina
15" Retina (current)

... they've always been leaps and bounds better than the competition. Drastically better build quality. Drastically faster. Slimmer. Lighter.

But the industry has really caught up. And all the while, Apple is asking MORE for their newest device.

Yeah, yeah... MacOS. But a lot of us with 1st-and-2nd year retina macbook Pros were really anxious for new devices. We're ready to upgrade. But I really don't see myself gaining much capability here upgrading, even though I've had my laptop for more than three years.

I wonder how the PS4 Pro will look on the LG Ultrafine 5K, and if it will transfer sound if I buy a USB-C to HDMI adapter.

The only thing holding me back is that I will have to switch the cable from mac to ps4 every time, since you can only connect it to one main device.

The price (after Apple's reduction) is very good though. Also, I don't understand why so many say these screens look ugly.. looks fine to me?

I hope NEC starts adding USB-C as a standard to their displays soon.

I'm wondering the exact same thing.... will I be able to run a PS4 pro through the ultra fine 4K monitor? My plan is to buy the new MacBook, monitor and PS4 before the new year.....

The LG 5K display uses Thunderbolt 3 for the interface, which is not supported on a PS4 Pro. However, the LG 4K display does not use TB3, so that may potentially work... but I'm not sure.

I'm surprised to see no reactions from people getting their Touch Bar MBP today. I'm still trying to set mine up, but man that keyboard, I am not into it.

When do we reckon the LG 5K will be available to order? I'm hanging out for one!!

I believe the website says December. I don't believe you'll be able to use it with anything but the new MBP though, as TB3 only supports DisplayPort 1.2 and so the MBP uses 2 DP streams to display at that res.

Arstechnica's review rated the battery to be higher

Wait, so these latest MBP's run for 16 freaking hours just browsing the web? Or am I missing something?

If I'm remembering things correctly, this browsing test is extremely light. Something about refreshing a website every 15 seconds and doing nothing else.

Teardown of the new 15 inch MBP. The SSD is not removable and battery cells look very small. Pretty disappointing design decisions but can't say I'm surprised.

9to5mac: Touch Bar MacBook Pro models have non-upgradeable SSDs, seemingly under-sized batteries

Owners who have opened them up are finding that the SSD chips in the Touch Bar machines are permanently soldered to the logic board.

Owners have also been noticing something odd about the innards of the new machines: the multiple battery cells all appear to have quite large gaps around them. One Imgur user drew particular attention to this in a series of open-case photos, speculating that Apple may have limited their size to hit a weight target.

It does. Just virtually no developers have taken advantage of it.

Does iCloud Keychain work with third-party apps?

Yes. Developers can update their apps to work with iCloud Keychain. Passwords saved by those apps are kept up to date on all devices that use the app and are using iOS 7.0.3 and later or OS X Mavericks 10.9 and later.

goddamnit, apple.
The sad being not removable is potentially a huge issue.

During repairs a removable, even if proprietary, SSD means your data is transferable. Say you have a bent machine or it's water damaged and power won't turn on. There's a chance the data is safe. Transfer the ssd to an enclosure or another machine and check the data. If it's soldered on, that chance greatly diminishes. It could actually be fine but with no way to remove it it may as well be toast in those circumstances.

The MacBook is like this too.

It’s pretty sad for upgradeability and hardware salvageability as well. I mean an Apple SSD blade is worth good money, not to mention it’s cool if you buy a large storage MBP and it breaks you can get another one with the smallest storage and transfer the SSD, without paying the Apple storage upgrade markup twice.

Data-wise it doesn’t worry me so much in the sense that it just reinforces the importance of backing up. Everyone needs to backup, but with this MacBook Pro, it’s vital to have any sort of wifi backup setup from the get-go. Time Machine or cloud backup or whatever.

Actually don't mind the keyboard. And I really like the clicks.

It's the non-mechanical touchpad that feels odd to me. Also not sure how much I'm going to like the TouchBar.

Also, the OLED screen looks disgusting next to the LCD display.

Watching some video reviews of the Touchbar MacBook I did notice the refresh rate was slower than the camera. I didn't know flat displays could have low refresh rates these days. I'm sure it'll get better in time. How high is the resolution on it? Is it Retina enough? I swear I saw pixels in the reviews.

That said I'm glad to see reviews starting to Come in. I want to see a Developer do a video on what the touchbar can and cannot do.

Displays function keys as default is my assumption.
That's what I'd assume. They wouldn't replace them without having a default fall back mode.

What does it look like in apps that don't recognize it at all?

My only concern is that they leave that large space on the left side so the buttons are symmetrical because of the TouchID taking up the right end so is the Escape shifted? Or are they lined up like they should be?

On unsupported apps it just has the Control Strip on the right side, and I think the ESC key on the left.

One weird thing with Touch ID is that it doesn't seem to work with all auth prompts. Maybe the apps have to be updated to support it? My experience has been inconsistent with that. I wish it worked with sudo commands too.

Day 2, still hating the keyboard. It is looouuuud, and really never not loud.

So the speaker grilles on the 13" model are purely cosmetic.

LOL.

With that, the skimping on on batteries even after making it as thin as possible, and the compromises on internals while being insanely priced, this is definitely a "v1.0" product.

I'm now on the bandwagon that 2016 is Apple's off year. Even Sierra has been hot garbage for me. I hope they figure out what they're doing in 2017

Ick.

Nonetheless, I couldn't be happier to have my 13-inch with Touch Bar. Coming from a mid-2011 Air, it's a night and day difference in just getting basic tasks done (opening large PDFs, where I suppose the faster flash memory helps, and streaming 1080p+ videos). And that's not even touching upon the massive jump to this crazy retina screen.

Other minor improvements include non-wobbly hinge (a constant flaw with the 11-inch) and (even though the battery indicator keeps saying I only have 3 hours left at 98% when I'm only using Safari, which is worrisome) I assume the increased battery life will be transformative for someone like me who was always on the hunt for an outlet.

Flaws are few, but still annoying. The keys are loud, and the keys are shallow. Nothing can prepare you for how little travel they get. The touchpad is comically large and frequently results in accidental inputs when typing (even worse since I have it set to "Tap to Click"). I'm not sold on the Touch Bar, and mostly bought into it for future-proofing. Webcam is garbage. I wish the headphone jack were on the left side of the chassis. Sierra is oddly laggy when it comes to animations, and coming from El Capitan on my Air, the Mission Control animation is horrifically slow (seems the only fix is to enable "Reduce Motion" in accessibility, but that options has too many secondary effects I don't want).

I don't think I'll be particularly peeved if Apple refreshes this V1 product earlier than expected (like in March or something) because I really, truly needed it now. But if they magically find a way to fit a decent-sized battery without pockets of nothing between the cells in a few months, I'll be pissed. Battery life is the only thing I feel was shortchanged here, and I'm not about that BS.

OK, in the time it took for me to post this, I went from 98% to 88%. Should I be worried? I'm at mid-level brightness, literally nothing going on but Safari and Mail in the background. I think it should be done indexing by now...what is going on?

Just heard about this myself. What a joke and complete waste of space.
