It was fine. My biggest problem with it is the retcon. Apparently, modern star wars wants us to pretend Jedi didn't happen.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Episode 6 happened and it has not been retconned at all.

I don't understand why people take issue with the First Order. If people complain about that than they should complain about Empire Strikes Back.

They blew up the Death Star and beat Darth Vader in A New Hope. Empire destroyed.
Aahh no son, still heaps of the Empire left and they gonna kill the rebels on Hoth.

The Empire controlled thousands of planets, why would you think they were defeated after destroying 2 Death Stars and killing Palpatine? There are probably 100 other people under Palpatine who believe what he believes and under each of them thousands of soldiers.

I'd love a movie set between ep 6 and 7 because that's most likely where you'll get some incredible full scale battles. The battle of Endor was just the start, it showed the Galaxy that they can fight back.

The Empire still existing as the First Order is just a lazy, boring way to approach the sequel to ROTJ. Could it have happened? Sure. Should they have made a sequel that makes the climax of the original trilogy to be mostly inconsequential? Nope. God forbid someone comes up with some original ideas instead of doubling down on the same shit over and over again.

Why is Empire Strikes Back not considered lazy then? They clearly defeated the empire at the end of A New Hope.

Vader survives, so does the Empire. The Empire should have fallen to pieces with the loss of Vader and Palpatine.

The Empire isn't something that fizzles away overnight. Billions of people were propagandized, and droids reprogrammed, across thousands of star systems.
But the sequel trilogy blew it. Viewers didn't need to see the obviousness of Imperial remnants trying to take over the galaxy again. The crumbling Empire belonged in the background, not the main conflict.

What theclaw135 theclaw135 said. The Empire is billions of people, not just 2 men.
The sequel trilogy definitely could have jumped 60 years ahead in time and not deal with the Empire at all. But you need to understand how "toxic" some of the community was about the prequel trilogy, the prequel trilogy was hated and people hated Lucas for making them. Disney wanted to avoid making original things and wanted to stick to nostaligia feels so they kept the sequel trilogy looking and feeling very similar to the original trilogy.
And as great as Mando is, it still relies very heavily on member-beries.

I say again, if Disney can make a movie or a trilogy set between episode 6 and 7, it could retroactively make the sequel trilogy better. One of the biggest complaints, Luke, seeing him change from the Luke in episode 6/Mando to the Luke in episode 8 would be amazing.

I agree, it would have been a cool idea to have some remnant cells of Empire loyalists appear in the sequel movies, rather than have the focus of the movie be the Empire 2.0. Maybe even show those cells in a sympathetic light and have them be the new Rebels who team up with the heroes to do some shit.

Missed opportunity for the sequel trilogy but Mando is starting to touch on this idea. Not so much the "sympathetic" light but we are getting glimpses of the remnant cells. Mando takes place after all the bigger battles between the Rebels and Empire though. I think the final battle was on Jakku, a year and a half after Endor.

In Star Wars Legends it took 3 years to take back Corruscant. At least 6 or 7 years after Endor the Empire calls itself the Dark Empire in Star Wars Legends.

So whether it's the old "cannon" or new cannon the Empire stuck around for a long time and both cannons "shit" all over whatever Lucas did with the original trilogy.
If Lucas made his own sequel films he also probably would have shitted all over himself and kept the Empire around.
