No tension in the movie (Superman battles a real estate scam?/island?). Superman is made out to be a Christ figure, he has a super baby. He stalks Lois, Lois is 12...

The jet rescue was the only interesting part of the whole film.

A lot of people disliked it for the following reasons:
1. It tied in with the original series. In the age of reboots, a lot of people were confused at how and why this entry tied in with the original. I mean, you can't take the movie so seriously if you know that Superman was on the verge of teaming up with Richard Pryor and throwing all the nukes into space.

2. It was weird. Superman has a baby? So he just banged Lois Lane one night? Imagining that is the most awkward thing ever. Was his suit just crumpled on the floor while she forgot to ask "hey, do you have a condom?" Also was this movie supposed to be modern or retro or what? And fucking Kumar just beats the shit out of Superman? God I was cringing in the theatre.

3. Sucky villains. The master plan is to make an island to sell off land. Oh, but making the island might kill some people. A lot of people really disliked Hackman's hokey portrayal of Luthor, but for some reason they decided to revive that dated idea of Luthor being a wig-wearing jokester. Ruthless businessthug Luthor that we saw in the animated series was much more interesting and relevant.

4. Nothing happened. What were the action scenes again? He saves a plane, ok cool. And then he gets shot in the eye. I forget the rest. But seriously this movie was so boring.

Yeah I also heard Hulk going toe-to-toe with somebody else similar in strength would be good but that boring fight scene still didn't top the tank smasha in Lee's Hulk.

It's not really the content, it's the scene that matters. I got nothing against a really insane fight which this new film has the potential to bring, but it's gotta be filmed well.

And Snyder better go easy on the slow-mo.

Critically it was well received. The general public didn't enjoy it so much. A lot of the complaints are pretty stupid really (like Superman stalking Lois. It's a very short scene and not as bad as they make it out to be). The biggest problem was it was tied so heavily to the Donnerverse.

It did a lot right and when it got those things right it was great. Unfortunetly there were more highs than lows. The biggest problem was Superman leaving Earth for 5 years and the whole Superkid thing.

People can complain all they want but in the end it was the Superman movie we needed to get WB to finally let go of the old films.
 
Superman Returns was a giant pile of horseshit. Hey guys, we've got this character, he is super strong, super fast, can fly, is nearly indestructible, can shoot motherfucking laser beams out of his eyes, and is an american icon that is guaranteed to draw an audience. What should we do with him? Make a movie filled with awesome fight scenes where other super strong bad guys get thrown through buildings and they have fights in space and explode things with laser beam eyes? Naw lets make him a emo bitch who acts like a giant vagina the entire movie, got his ex girlfriend knocked up and then gets beat up by a real estate agent with the worst evil plan ever concocted.

I'll be honest here, I didn't totally hate the Kryptonite Island. I just think they went about it the wrong way. The ideas they had for the Returns sequel sounded pretty solid.

I am looking forward to a newer, modern take on superman. People need to drop this "Realistic" stuff just because Nolan is producing. Superman is Sci-FI. They need to embrace that.

And yes, I liked Returns. I didn't mind the lack of action, I just wish the entire scene with the yacht and the superkid wasn't there.

That teaser deserved an award! I still remember thinking that a superman movie "in this age would look stupid" and flipping the fuck out after this teaser. Showed it to my cousin and his jaw was open the whole time.

There was an article early last year over on superherohype. From what I remember the plot was the island had settled in orbit around the earth, causing lots of trouble as far as damage goes. Then Doomsday turns up to make things even worse.

Did you also know that the original treatment for Superman Returns had Doomsday as the Bad guy? For reasons not known to me he was removed shortly after WB signed off on the project.

I don't mind the realistic angle... From a certain angle.

For example, one of my favorite scenes in a superhero movie is from Spiderman 2 when Spidey's chasing down some crooks in a car. The scene wasn't about Spidey, it was about the thugs reacting to Spidey that made it so great.

It helped make Spiderman seem more a part of the world in that sense.

I've never really understood/appreciated these ideas by some fans, ideas that are becoming increasing prevalent, for scenes showing him punching people through buildings or some kind of apoplectic battle, usually involving buildings coming down. Maybe it's purely reactionary to the criticism of Returns that there were not enough action scenes, but a Superman movie has to be more about him punching or blowing things up.

Take note at the above teaser. Universally acclaimed by fans and neutrals, but there is hardly any action in it. Why does it, then, give people goosebumps? I'll tell you why: it is the romanticism of flight, the unveiling of him as powerful by emphasising his humble beginnings and contrasting them to how the people stand and gaze at the skies in awe of him. It's this silent yet powerful portrayal of a hero that encompasses all our idealism and naivety, that people get goosebumps for. That last scene in the teaser where he literally watches us beyond the clouds (ok enough of the biblical symbolism Warner Bros) and accelerates down captures everything Superman is in just a few seconds. And no buildings came down, no explosions and no 'action'.

Remember the airplane scene? What were the two components in that scene? 1) A falling airplane and 2) Superman's flight. That desperate flight scene oozed heroism and power. The audience were willing him to save the plane in time, and his response was to chase it and grab it. The wing would break. Chase it and try to grab it again. Chase it again.

I'm hoping this reboot doesn't resemble that alleged script leaking around in the late 90's involving him being shot by Kryptonite missiles from jets and a battle involving the military or some nonsense. Superman movies have to be different to Iron Man.

Re: the 70s/80s series, Reeve looked the part and the music was good. Beyond that, you're looking at a schlocky trainwreck that starts bad and gets worse with each film.

Returns borrowing heavily from that series was not a good thing.

The Animated Series => Justice League incarnation of the character was pretty great, though. Superman can demonstrably be enjoyable, have internal consistency, credibly menacing villains, etc.
 
Superman Returns sucked because Bryan Singer doesn't get Superman. He screwed it up from frame 1, when he based it on the idea that Superman left Earth for 5 years. Then he spent the rest of the movie doing a sequel that plays more like a rewrite of the first movie. It was a waste of everyone's time.

Eh, just felt the characters were more realistic, and had more chemistry, and liked the version's smug, sexual, supermogul Luthor more than any other.

How does it possibly make him look like a dick? He doesn't know the guy. It's not like he even should - Cavill works the TV circuit, Bale is films. There's crossover, but for the most part they're very different communities.

While this may be true, if he starts grunting "SWEAR TO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", I'm outta there.
 
The thing I like about the Snyder hire is that we don't really know what we're going to get other than some great visuals and more action than Returns. Some people would say that Snyder was TOO respectful of the Watchmen source material, so in that aspect I don't see any reason to panic about this being a movie just about action, especially with Nolan involved.

The thing about Supes is that he is such a symbol. His power is at such a level that certain themes beg to be explored, and if they aren't, then you're left with something that feels cheap.

I like the fact that Returns explored the emotional aspects of the character but it was taken too far and there were some fairly egregious liberties taken that weren't effective in improving the product.

300 and Watchmen were standalone graphic novel stories.

With Supes he's been retconned and rewritten and alternate reality'd so many times that it's hard to make a high-fidelity adaptation; there's a lot of incompatible information out there stretching back for nearly 80 years.

I don't even know how one would try to make a faithful adaptation of that sort of thing. You just have to kind of pick a thematic and stylistic tack, incorporate the elements you like - and marginalize / eliminate those you don't (I'm looking at you, Krypto) - and run with it.
