Hero Games announces Cryptic's MMORPG - Champions Online

The game is officially 360/PC from their website. No PS3 version.

Yes I've checked in their forums too. The game is actually at the same state on both platforms and it will have cross-platform play. That's HUGE news, it didn't get the attenction that it deserved, it seems.

My guess that this is the Marvel Universe Online MMOG, just modified for a different licence. Cryptic was working on it until yesterday, and now after the cancellation this game pops out, with full Xbox 360 support? Too much of a coincidence ;)

Yeah Manabyte pretty much confirmed this earlier on in the thread.

Cross-plat play is a HUGE plus.

This is going to be so huge.

City of Heroes/Villains was so close to getting it right and perfect. I loved that game. With all of their previous experience and now the fact that it'll run on 360 (should be very friendly to newcomers to MMOs) - we may finally have something that can chip away a bit at WoW's dominance.

WOW. That is totally Dr. Fate.

Players will create and customize their secret identity. As the game progresses, you’ll choose whether that identity will remain secret or if you’ll make it public – a decision that will dramatically affect the missions your character will encounter.

MEGATON! No superhero games really tackle having to deal with a secret identity. I loved CoH. I'm sooo all over this.

Dont think I'd pick up the pc version and play it extensively since it seems like pvp is an afterthought at best, but if the 360 version actually comes out I think I'd play that casually since I've been really intrigued at the idea of a console mmo.

Really like the graphic engine/art and COH/COV was probably one of the best "playing" MMOs ever released, but it got boring in like a week. I'm really glad they are adding real gear, token pvp, and some other longevity things, because they were really what COH was missing at launch. Leveling up to level up just wasn't enough motivation for me at all.

environments look just like CoH. This looks to be less than a sequel imo

So the new crazy level of customisation in costumes, powers, power animations, movement modes, the semi-classless structure, the creation on an your arch-nemesis and secret identity, the entirely new combat system, the new loot system that was almost completely absent from the last game, the unique cell-shaded art style, real cut scenes, voice acting, cross platform play, new setting/universe among other things are irrelevant and this is pretty much an expansion pack because there is a screenshot of a cave?

Also, I'd love to see the lava/snowfield zones of CoH shown in that trailer.

Not to mention the moon and alternate dimension. And as much as CoH overused them, it's essentially impossible to make a superhero game of this scope that doesn't feature caves, warehouses, hidden labs, and urban districts to some degree. The concepts are far too heavily ingrained into superhero tradition.

damn, I hate falling for early MMORPG hype but this one looks so much more professional than most other MMOs. And it'll probably play nicely.

I loved creating my character in CoH, but the actual game was snorealizing.

360 though, now we're talking. The Green Bullet will fly again!

If its good, i'd like to get some kinda Super Sentai team going. Thats right, I went there.

Course i'd probably be on the PC version either way...just depends on the pricing structure and if its any good.

Im curious about trying the controls myself. Kinda used to stuff like Keybindings that might not be on X360

A fast paced action MMO could actually benefit from console controls if done correctly. And telling your teammates "look out" will always beat typing it in my opinion.

Defintely. Really worked nicely during Phantasy Star Universe. Unfortunatly alot of the old school pen and paper champ players at the game's main forums think of voice chat as a detriment and that it ruins "immersion". Kinda wish people wouldnt spread things like the stereotype of a normal LIVE gamer (or anyone on voice chat) being an idiot.

Yeah I signed up too. If this is any good it will totally be the death knell of my CoH accounts. I still play almost daily and hate myself for doing so.

Anything ever come of this? Anybody actually get into the beta and want to give impressions?

I'm pretty excited for this game but there hasn't really been a lot of buzz here for it.

Anyone else get an invite? I just got mine in the mail

edit: seems I missed the playtest by a few days, so guess I got to wait till the new one starts. Bummer:lol

I am sooo jealous. I would kill a goat and eat its entrails for a beta key.

It's actually much more effective to just post the actual chart:

I really can not understand how the Lineage games get a million subscribers. As part of the demise of Tabula Rasa, NCSoft gave me 3 months free game time for Lineage 2, but that game is simply horrendous. No story, no quests to speak of, just killing the same mobs over and over again, with the same 2 skills. Pretty nice character models, though.

I will never play a superhero MMO. Yuck. I already hate comics enough as it is.

Sorry for the bump but is anyone in beta for this?

I'm interested if it looks to launch on time.

I only played a little. I'm mainly only interested so that Cryptic can focus on Star Trek Online once this launches and disappears.

I'll be in the beta starting August 4th. I've pre-ordered and am really looking forward to getting back into an MMO again.

Hopefully by then they will have opened beta testing days from Wed and Sat. Two days a week is not enough.

Yeah, you'd think they would want people on there as much as possible. I think when Open beta comes around, they'll have it up for most of the week to get some servers under stress.

Should be seeing a ton of beta invites soon, and then Open Beta August 15th or so. Can't wait for that:)

Brilliant.

I've been keeping up, but haven't dug into all the info: is there a "hub" city a la City of Heroes? One of the best parts of that game was the Top Ten-esque, sprawling city brimming full of heroes. So charming. Most of the screens and info I see on this focus on the far-flung locales, which makes it seem very instanced, or rather, isolated. I want my Astro City.

I probably should've made a thread, but one of those online webzines gave away like 10000 keys for the Champions Online beta and those'll be mailed out around the 3rd.

There is a Millenium City (Old Detroit), but what makes CO so nice, is the different locations like Lemuria (underwater), Stronghold (max security villian prison), etc...

That's where I got my beta invite, I also pre-ordered so I would've eventually made beta on the 14th I guess...

I really need to beat Demon's Souls before CO comes out or I'm afraid I'll not have time to do it! ack!
