LIVE REPORTS FROM TONIGHT'S SMACKDOWN TAPING
by Mike Johnson & Buck Woodward @ 11:00:00 PM on 8/2/2005

Mike Johnson is in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and will be checking in throughout the night with results from the Smackdown taping:

Dark Match:

- CM Punk & Bobby Lashley defeated TNT when Lashley pinned Garrison Cade.

Velocity:

- Nunzio defeated Paul London to win the WWE Cruiserweight Title when Nunzio hit London from behind with a foreign object while Big Vito distracted London and the referee.

- Frankie Kazarian defeated Danny Doring after an STO. The crowd chanted "boring" early, but got into the match as it went on.

- Simon Dean won a quick squash.

- Paul London cut a promo in the ring, saying he wanted everyone to march in protest to WWE Headquarters because he lost the Cruiserweight Title to "Two criminals".

- Hardcore Holly defeated U.S. Champion Orlando Jordan via disqualification when Jordan pulled the referee in front of him as Holly was charging him in a corner.

Smackdown:

- A video recap of Eddie telling Rey's "secret" started the show.

- Smackdown opened with a Christian talk-show segment (ala Piper's Pit, Highlight Reel, Carlito's Cabana, etc.) called the "Peep Show" with Rey Mysterio as the guest. Christian started to question Rey, but Mysterio cut him off and said that Christian had promised him that Eddie Guerrero would be there. Christian then introduced Guerrero, who appeared on the screen wearing a T-Shirt that said "I'm your Papi". Guerrero started to read "Chapter 2" of his bedtime story for Dominic, but Rey kept yelling to stop him. Guerrero said he was going to read Chapter 2 by the end of the show, one way or another. Guerrero also said he had something Rey would really like, and Christian hit Rey from behind with the mic and laid him out.

- Jillian Hall cut a promo saying her mole has put a "blemish on her soul", trying to put heat on it. She was saying fans shouldn't look away from her because of it. She walked past Booker T and Sharmell, with Booker looking at her and remarking "Tell me I didn't just see that".

- MNM defeated Chris Benoit and Booker T in a real good match. The finish saw Benoit lock the Crippler Crossface on Johnny Nitro on the floor while Booker fought Joey Mercury in the ring. Booker went for the ax kick on Mercury, but Melina grabbed his leg as he came off the ropes. Sharmell chased Melina into the ring, but Jillian Hall tackled Sharmell and they started a catfight. Booker threw Hall off of Sharmell, but it allowed Mercury to roll up Booker from behind and hook the trunks for the pin. There was a huge chant for Benoit after the match.

- Theodore R. Long informed Christian that he would face Rey Mysterio tonight.

- A video package was shown on how JBL became the number one contender to the World Heavyweight Title.

- Josh Mathews tried to interview Randy Orton, but Orton blew him off and said he would explain his actions to the Undertaker himself tonight.

- They had the Batista-JBL contract signing for Summerslam. They went back and forth on the mic, and Batista finally signed first. However, Batista left the stipulations blank, saying he would beat JBL in any type of match. JBL said Batista had a "Million dollar body and a nickel brain". JBL said he would beat Batista at Summerslam, and it would be in a No Holds Barred match.

- Psicosis & Super Crazy defeated William Regal & Scotty 2 Hotty. Scotty was beat down, and when he went to tag Regal, Regal jumped off the apron and walked off. After getting a ton of heat on Scotty, Psicosis pinned him with a top rope legdrop while Regal watched from the aisle.

- Backstage, Road Warrior Animal was painting his face while Heidenreich was saying he loved his new haircut. They teased that he would have his face painted next.

- Randy Orton came to the ring for a promo. He said that fate caused him to lose his chance at immortality, but now it has put him on Smackdown. He said that Undertaker took away what he wanted, so he's going to take everything that he can from the Undertaker. Orton issued a challenge for Undertaker to face him at Summerslam. Undertaker's music played, and a purple light enveloped the ring. The letters "RKO" appeared on the Titantron. The Undertaker's voice rang out, saying "You want a legacy, you will get your wish. At Summerslam, you will rest in peace". The RKO on the screen turned into "RIP". The crowd booed at the end of the segment when Undertaker didn't appear before the crowd.

- They ran down the Summerslam card, with the announcement of Matt Hardy vs. Edge receiving the biggest pop from the live crowd.

- WWE Tag Team Champions Road Warrior Animal & Heidenreich defeated Josh Daniels & Damian Adams. Heidenreich had Road Warrior-style makeup on.

- A Boogeyman promo was shown.

- Eddie Guerrero was outside when a woman showed up. Guerrero said he was thrilled to see her because without her, there is no Chapter 2.

- Rey Mysterio defeated Christian with the 619 in a good match. Eddie Guerrero and the woman sat in chairs in the aisle. Rey challenged Eddie to get in the ring. Eddie said he would love to, but he has "manners" because an old friend, Anna, is with him. Rey looked shocked at the mention of her name. Anna took Eddie's story book and gave it to Rey, and Eddie said that he can read it, or Eddie will. Rey looked at the book, but didn't read anything over the mic. Eddie said that Rey was holding official custody papers and Rey will have to bring Dominic next week, because the courts have determined that Eddie is the true father, biologically and legally. He said that next week, Rey will have to hand Dominic over to Eddie. Eddie said that if Rey proves he truly loves Dominic, maybe Eddie will let Rey keep him.

- Rey cut a long, good promo about how much he loves Dominic. He said that they all promised to wait until Dominic was old enough to understand, but Eddie had to open his mouth. Rey said Dominic is depressed and begged Eddie not to hurt him anymore. Eddie said that Rey was good, and "almost had him". Anna said something to Eddie, and Guerrero said that Anna is his attorney and reminded Eddie not to fall for it. Guerrero said that after Rey lied all this time to Dominic, the courts will never trust him to care for Eddie's son. He said that he has three daughters he loves, and next week he will have Dominic to carry on the Guerrero legacy. Guerrero said that next week we would hear Chapter 3 of his story, "Dominic comes home to Papi", to end Smackdown.

Christian jobs to the 619, the deadliest move in wrestling history.

Has he even won a match on Smackdown? It's getting stupid.

I don't mind. They are saving Christian for a bigger fued and he is just a prop right about now. He is so over, it won't hurt him. Hopefully I get my Christian/Benoit fued soon.

This is probably a work.....

Lesnar update: negotiations break down

After verbally agreeing to terms with WWE, Brock Lesnar has decided to withdraw from any involvement with the company.

This is just intresting!

So I was watching the WWF debut of Chris Jericho from 99 (currently up on the Matches section) and after re-living the awesomeness of it (I marked out like a little schoolgirl when it first happened), there was some stuff he said in his promo that caught my ear. What he said back then completely holds true for the WWE we know today, and a guy like this with a promo like this is exactly what WWE needs.

Some snippets that foretold the future....

"A new era is what this once proud and profitable company sorely needs. What was once a captivating and trendsetting program has now deteriorated into a cliche, lets be honest, boring snoozefest that is in dire need of a knight in shining armor..."

"Now lets go over the facts. Television ratings - downward spiral. Pay Per View buyrates - plummeting. Mainstream acceptance - nonexistant. And reactions of the live crowds - complete and utter silence. And I know why you're silent: you're silent because you're embarrassed to be here! And quite frankly, i'm embarassed for you... "

"And the reason you're embarassed is because of the steady stream of uninteresting, untalented mediocre "sports-entertainers" that you're forced to cheer for and care for. No wonder you're not cheering! You could care less about every single idiot in the dressing room..."

"You people have been led to believe that mediocrity is excellence..."

It's so scary how spot on he is.

Yeah kinda like they've been saving RVD for a big fued for the past 4 years!

People: Stop caring about and watching this crap. There are other things to see and do. You can get more worthwhile wrestling in a single X Division match or any one match on a ROH show than the hours and hours of time you waste on the small chance that something cool might actually happen on Vince's boring two-hour variety sports-entertainment shows.

Fuck TNA

Reason: From the 6 hours of WWE we get a week there is usually a few entertaining matchs that out preform what TNA give each week. TNA also never created any homegrown talent, everyone is taken from some other organization or are castaway WWE stars

ROH a different story, mostly everything is good (although I am forced to watch 6 month late shows on The Wrestling Channel or buy DVD's if i wish to watch new matchs)

WWE is still the best value for money show at the moment (I dont have to go out of my way to see some entertaing wrestling and I dont have to pay for most of it each week and most PPV over here a free)

BULLSHIT.

Name one entertaining match from the last 2 raws, smackdowns and GAB? The ost entertaining thing? a promo by a vet in HBK.

It's all been a big ball of suck. ALL of it. Go watch a TNA PPV or ROH tape and see what good wrestling is. Anything with X-division talent is usually a great match.

So what if they've taken talent from all over the place? Worked for Vince McMahon and Ted Turner. BEsides, it's not like Vinnie Macs "home grown" guys are worth a shit lately.

He just got EXTREMELY lucky with Austin and Rock, it was all right place right time for their characters. Now what does he have? A 40 year old slug as WHC and a one-dimensional Vanilla Ice who will get stale QUICK as WWE champ. Their IC champ is someone who shouldn't even be wrestling yet, and then theirs the US champ who should have been cut long ago.

The WWE product is in SHAMBLES.

Note: I was talking about Heat/Velocity as well, which is where most of WWEÂ’s good matches are at the moment. I am not saying WWE is great; I just barely like it at the moment.

TNA have no direction at them moment, the donÂ’t even have a crowd that pays to get it, it emanates from a soundstage and there talent is all grabbed from other places, mostly picked for ROH, which is what really pisses me off. There is ZERO storylines and ZERO people getting any kind of a continues push.

I DO watch as much ROH as much I can (the weekly 5 months old show on TWC is where I watch most of it I also bought a few DVDÂ’s as well. I also watch TNA (which is a month behind on TWC) and even though I always manage to look at most of impact (due to multiple repeats) and I record most PPVÂ’s to watch later. The last PPV I saw, Slamaversary was average in my opinion and the WWE PPV it was up against, Vengeance was much better than it. No Surrender should be much better but the best match on the card as a Ring Of Honor long stay in it, Samoa Joe.

If I had to rate the shows in order it would be

ROH>WWE>>>>>>>>>TNA

TNA is a alternative although it is not a very good one. I have not seen them do anything (with there own exclusive talent) that could not have been done else where. I do watch all 3 promotions (plus a whole lot others like NOAH, New Japan, FWA, IWW, Zero One, Memphis, LAW, MLA) but if TNA ever met its demise I would really not mind.

Ok this is where your rationale falls apart.....

No continuous pushes? Now granted it is hard to do a decent storyline with a one hour internet only show for now, but at least its something until they start on Spike.

Let's look at who's been pushed lately pretty well...

Samoa Joe. Going straight into a big PPV tourny match
Chris Daniels
AJ Styles, always gets pushed
Raven, title push
Then there's Jarrett... he'll always push himself, even though his role has lessened since the Carters stepped in.

I really trust in D'Amore and his booking committee. It's a very old school approach to it, not much in the way of backstage, most of the stores are played out IN THE RING. right where it should be.

Yes, they have picked and choosed who they wanted from ROH, Indy's and other NWA territories as well as released WWE talent. But then again ROH pulls people from the same outlets as well. But no one has twisted these peoples arms. They are all there because they want to be. But then again ROH pulls people from the same outlets as well. It allows them to work on a national level and still keep doing the indy stuff, which is what ROH essentially is. Now if ROH would get a TV contract that could change.

ROH is going to change soon anyway with the loss of Gibson and Kendrick, the diminished role of Samoa Joe and the loss of CM Punk. I could see Austin Ares gone soon too.

Am I saying TNA does everything right? No, not all all. but you can't discount the quality in-ring produst they do have.

Then we should not be fighting over this, I like TNA for all those reason too although it happens to rate #1 in you book for those reason it only enters at #3 for me. The only thing I ever liked that TNA created is AMW. Even though WWE fails with 8/10 of their new gimmicks nowadays at least their trying to debut new guys not just grab a rival premotions top guy, throw him in near the top and hope for the best.

Maybe they see potential for a Village people gimmick wth Rob Conway, just have Regal come back as the Real Mans Man and maybe Big Bossmaa.... oh crap.. Time to find another cop. The Mountie is still alive right?

Don't say that.

Though it might be funny as hell.

As far as WWE, it isn't as good as it used to be, but it is still fun, outside of the diva search. They had a 20 minute match to open up RAW this week. Of course it was 3 hoss workers and 1 good worker, but it was entertaining. Right now it seems they are hellbent on creating new stars with limited success so far. I have been watching wrestling since I was like 8, they have gone throw down times before and it will happen again. For all I know in 6 years, Chris Masters will be an awesome headliner. You never know. It is just that fans have gotten so jaded that they want everything yesterday and if their favorite isn't carrying the big strap, the entire promotion sucks.

I have fun watching good wrestling and decent storylines. The WWE rarely has either anymore. Everytime I try to watch a WWE show(which is getting more and more rare) I end up skipping 2/3 of it. They are catering to the bottom of the barrel now more than ever. At this point WCW in its last days > current WWE.
