I got the two Hostel movies today, for some reason the HMV superstore had a lot of Hostel II and only one Hostel, but they may have had more in stock? It was slightly cheaper than amazon.ca

Best Buy doesn't have the first Hostel for some reason, at least on the website. Not on Futureshop either.

you know that both will eventually (within the next few years) die to downloads, right? just seems kind of dumb to hope one or the other fails to the effect of giving the other one a year or two extra lifespan tops.

I don't buy that. CDs arene't dead yet, and music is waaaaay more practical to download and friendly to portable formats than movies.

What do you think is the ratio of people who will d/l for convenience and people who will buy a physical copy even though it's less convenient?

I've also wondered too, why are there no inserts for Blu-Ray (all HD?) movies? It just comes with the same advertising pieces. Is there only something for uber special editions?

I would like to know the same thing. It's a bit cheap of them not to include inserts.

I disagree.. plenty of market space for all to exist. I personally prefer physical media.

Also, HD movies are pretty damn huge. Only people with top-of-the-line fiber optic connections would be able to download them in a reasonable amount of time.

However, the writing IS on the wall for CDs as sales have been declining at a directly proportional rate to download sales increasing. VHS wasn't dead in 1998 or 1999 either, but it was obvious which direction VHS and DVD were both heading in by that point.

As for HD movies, having to go to the store and buy a movie (or even ordering it online and waiting for shipping) is much less convenient than me going home tonight, selecting Meet the Robinsons from a menu, and watching it begin to play in just a few moments. The death of optical disc formats is inevitable, and the faster residential lines become, the faster the death of those formats will occur.

I certainly don't mean to muck this thread up. I'm very happy with both purchases and plan to buy movies now as long as it's viable. but to me the writing is on the wall for optical formats, and rather than seeing one format bow out early (likely sending its exclusive studios to downloads only that much sooner) I would rather see the formats around as long as possible prolonging that inevitable end result.

not necessarily. I can download HD VOD titles over my cable line at about 1:2 real-time (half-speed). No they're not at the same bitrates and not at the same resolutions, but how often have we seen inferior merdia formats win out due to convenience, availability and pricing?

anyway, I really didn't mean to start anything.. I just didn't get why some people seemed so angry towards one format or another. I just want HD movies. I don't care what color the case is.

yeah, like we needed another "downloading ftw" person to post crap here.

Start your own "digital video distribution takeover thread" and go post there, because everyone here is hoping that HD discs (without the compressed, limited encodes you get on XBLA) will become the norm. And this thread is for discussion of the two formats.

I'll agree, but I also recognize that not everyone can or wants to be format neutral, and that's why there's so much conflict at times. Overall, we all have the same goal (long live HD discs), but we disagree on how to get there.

2001 looks positively wonderful on HD. Crisp and clear, with a distinctive, almost three-dimensional appearance to many scenes, while retaining an extremely film-like transfer. Warner clearly knew this was going to be THE movie people would judge and put great care into it.

The Shining is a bit softer, particularly the opening and other outdoor shots, and looks to have a pinkish tint to the picture (the off-color tennis ball, here, in Beaver's DVD comparison is similarly colored in the HD-DVD and is one of the more noticable instances) but still a very appealing, detailed image overall.

Eyes Wide Shut is, unfortunately, not terribly impressive. Color seems quite "thick" and saturated, grain is heavy throughout, and noise is prevalent on many dark objects (suits, cloaks, smoke and shadows, etc) to my eye. Looks marginally better than my R3 unedited DVD (which is also heavily grained) but far from being any sort of high-def showpiece. The case mentions having both rated and unrated versions selectable, though I can't find any way to do so -- it appears uncensored by default -- and the previously promised commentary is neither listed on the case or anywhere on the disc. This is one of my favorite Kubrick films and such an incredibly visual one at that, so this is disappointing.

Lucas and Spielberg have said this numerous times, DD is next big thing. I dont know how feasible it is yet but 199.99 players and 9.99 software by then would be very tempting for those that like physical collections.

Anyone seen any of the Kubrick movies or Scary Movie on Bluray in Canada yet?

Distribution is a fucking mess. I'm still trying to find Troy.

If MS does get Toshiba to jam HD-DVD drives into all 360s going forward with no significant end cost to consumers I would expect the format war to start gaining clarity.

I look at the cost like this, stand alones have essentially the same components (or less in terms of overall power) in them as a 360 except for the drive difference. The cost of the DVD drive in the 360 has to be quite small and the cost of HD-DVD drives has been dropping. Doing a swap and paying whatever subsidy to cover the extra makes perfect sense if Toshiba and the rest of the HD-DVD camp want to get aggressive.

There is nothing really holding this up beyond the ability to commit to the plan by people/companies who can make it happen. The only sticking point is the cost and who ends up bearing it.

Thanks for the mini reviews :) Cant wait to get 2001.

Hmmm now I might cancel my Eyes Wide Shut order. No commentary and only the unrated version, what the heck :\ Transfer sounds disappointing aswell.I'm suprised that it has a lot of noise, that bothers me more than grain which I was used to from watching my dvd copies of it.

I think those reviews of Eyes Wide Shut are missing one important item: The soft-grain look is/was intentional.

My 2001 HD DVD just arrived from the Warner Home Video store. Very happy to receive it on the release date (I also ordered with the 25% off preorders coupon).

EDIT: Flipped through a couple of scenes, and the visual fidelity is breathtaking. Can't wait to watch this over the weekend.

Interesting. I was at my local Best Buy, and the selection was overwhelmingly Blu-ray. I wonder if it changed.

Just picked up 2001 and Full Metal Jacket. Although I don't put much stock in Amazon sales, I do hope its high sales at Amazon are representative of the market as a whole. Warner usually does a great job with catalog releases in hi-def and it's good to see a great catalog release at the top of the charts for a change instead of crap like Fantastic Four.

Can someone answer the following questions for me?

1. Is the Toshiba HD-A2 being phased out?
2. If so, is that the reason Wal-Mart is slashing it to $198?
3. Is it a good player?

I do not think that it is being phased out, I think they just want to hit a certain price point.
Many people on here do speak very highly of it, and from what people have said I would say if you do not have a 1080P tv that it is a great pick up.

You will not be disappointed sir. I'm assuming you're buying the HD-DVD version (this is the HD movie thread after all), which is from all accounts totally incredible and a true showpiece for an HD setup. I've only seen it in the theater, so I can only comment that the movie itself is awesome. I was going to get the 3-disc Special Edition DVD set since I don't really plan on having an HDTV soon...but after seeing the features of the HD-DVD/DVD combo set, I'm probably going to just buy that, or ask for it for Christmas.

What do you guys think Amazon's decrease of stocking of HD films means for the format war?

These days if I don't pre-order stuff months in advance, they don't ship it until a week after the release date or something. Just cancelled my Kubrick stuff after everything was sold out and not shipping and will just pick them up at Best Buy tomorrow with coupons instead.

Do the formats suck so bad right now Amazon is scared to carry more than a handful of copies? Or is Amazon just being lame?

Are you simultaneously praising Shoot 'Em Up and Con-Air while ripping on The Rock? Really?

Yes.

Shoot'em Up is great in retrospect. Initially I didn't care for it after seeing it, but the more I thought about it and some of the sick / funny stuff in it, the more I leaned toward buying it on some format. :p

There's a difference between turning my brain off and enjoying a movie, and turning my brain off and letting that douchebag Michael Bay play kickball with it.

Granted, my brain is mostly turned off anyhow. :lol
