Casino Royale did great for a Bond movie, but as a whole it wasn't as big a box office draw as stuff like Happy Feet and Night at the Museum, so it's really not that surprising that it's not as popular as kids stuff on DVD.

I was about to sign up for Netflix this weekend for Blu-ray movies too. Man....I just cancelled my Blockbuster rental thing because the Blu-ray movies were always on long wait.

Wow, I was about to sign up for Netflix after my exams were over just so I could rent HD movies...thanks for the warning.

However, I tend to buy catalog releases on BR since I know Ill like the movie. I did splurge on Planet Earth though :\

Netflix is very dependent on the area where you live.

I just happen to live in an area where everyone owns Blu-ray/HD-DVD players, yet the local Netflix distro has like 1 copy of everything. :(

not true. Worldwide, Casino Royale outperformed night at the museum, and absolutely obliterated Happy feet at the box office.

from http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross?region=world-wide

Casino Royale: $587,607,184

Night at the Museum: $570,410,624

Happy Feet: $378,961,083

I joined about a month ago and I have only ever had problems with releases the week of but I am slow so by the time they get to me they are back in.

edit: man time flies

BTW, does anyone know what the record is for most DVD sales on its opening week? Museum got 6mil, which is insane. I'm guessing it has to be one of the animated flicks.

I don't know what the number is. But my guess is that Findiing Nemo is the record holder. But i can easily be wrong.

Hint hint Disney!!!!!

Numbers out for the week ending April 29. Did HD DVD get as close to Blu Ray as it ever will last week? Well at least HD DVD fanbois can take solace in that Planet Earth HD DVD outsold Planet Earth Blu Ray, even though they both got spanked by Night at the Museum. :p I think it is time to stop using Amazon.com as any guide, considering Planet Earth is top sellers on both formats with Night at the Museum nowhere to be found. Not only that but Deja Vu outsold them both too. We got combined top 10 sellers list too. :)

You know you have problems when one of the top 3 selling discs is Video Essentials. I mean VE is excellent, but no one besides the tiny amount of hardcore videophiles buys it.

Um, when the BRD Video Essentials comes out it will be a top seller as well...

How is 71% to 29% considered even remotely close?

Anyway, good numbers for Deja Vu, was a pretty good movie i thought. Been thinking about picking it up.

How is it that Batman Begins is always in the top 5 for HDDVD sales. Is this healthy for a format? :/

Seems to suggest a steady stream of new HD DVD player owners, simply picking up a great movie.

There is no way to tell.

Considering that Amazon currently shows 249 titles available for HD DVD (compared to slightly more - 289 - for Blu-ray), I rather doubt your suggestion.

The one Criterion that I want on Blu Ray more than any other, In the Mood for Love, is owned in the US by USA Films, a subsidiary of NBC Universal...

Anyone know what the odds are of a pirates trilogy set before year end ? I own the original on dvd , was considering the second on on bluray but then it dawned on my that may theatrical releases are usually out by oct/nov. You guys seem on the ball with the hidef rumours so what's the 411 ?

Not going to happen anytime soon. The 2 movies are 2 disc sets each. Maybe in a few years with added stuff to milk the franchise even more. Pirates 3 will be on Blu-ray in fall I'm guessing but don't expect a set.

This is massive news, and if true would end the format war RIGHT NOW!

May 9 07. Universal reportedly leaves HD-DVD camp

In a press conference, spokesmen of Blu-ray supporter Pioneer claimed, that Universal Home Entertainment will cancel the exclusive contract with the HD-DVD camp respectively their biggest hardware company, Toshiba. They said, the contract has already been cancelled, it just didn't come operative yet. If this is true, Universal would be free (on a long term) to publish movies for the competing format Blu-ray Disc, and the HD DVD Promotion Group would lose their only supporter among the Hollywood studios, after Paramount and Warner already left (Paramount and Warner were at one time HD DVD only prior to launch).

Translated from German.

CGI bullshit is the death knell of cinema
*if* it is true, then it is great news for the blu-ray camp.

We all know how some rumours can get out of control, remember the hd-dvd walmart rumour....

If Universal comes out and denies it, then we know it's BS, if they are silent about it, then it's probably true. This is something they cannot just bypass without a word.

I wonder who the pioneer guy was that spilled the beans.

It also depends on HOW they deny it. We all know how PR works.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
We'll see what happens. If true, though, I don't see me keeping the 360 add-on for much longer. I love HD DvD, but with no exclusive studios, I'd probably be better off with Blu Ray. Which means I'd need to buy a Ps3. :(

Well, things could get very interesting this week :)

But I'm not going to go get excited that "The war is over" until more time passes.

Making the assuming that major news sites pick up on this, and we hear nothing from Universal on it by the end of the week.. then, just maybe.
