There is a 99.9999999999999% chance nothing comes of this. trump is going to be president. But they should still exhaust every single possible wild goose chase theory.

If Hillary had won, they would be tearing up every precinct in the country looking for the FRAUD, in addition to drawing up her day 1 impeachment papers.

The NC GOP is pulling out every trick in the book to steal the governor's mansion that they clearly lost, even though the party now has control over every branch of government anyway. They never stop, they never give up, they would fight for a hundred years over 1 piddly seat they don't need and have no claim to just for pure spite.

Democrats are far too nice and it gets us nowhere. I'm in for the 'when they go low, we go lower" era myself. Sorry Michelle.

I'm sure it'll be a messy and unpleasant process, but if nothing else, it'll be worth looking into just to have the chance to do right by the climate change issue rather than leave Trump's administration to its devices. (Assuming Hillary plans to address the issue.)

This has nothing to do with "Taking the L" or "holding up for four years" or even who won or lost this election or getting the orange monster out of office. If the very basics of democracy in the most important country of the world can be rigged, be it from inside or outside, there HAVE to be thorough checks to get to the bottom of it.

It's not about this election's results, it's about fucking all of them.

Yup.

It's something I've never understood either, and which has frustrated me as I know several non-citizens who vote without a second thought. But many are very passionate about the topic, and I'm sure they'll be happy to explain their side of it.

I'm a non-citizen, explain how I could do this.

Go to a polling place that only cross references via name and address, forge the signature.

Yep. There's nothing to cross reference the signature with (from the polling places I've observed) so they can't tell its forged. If you see that there's already a signature in place, just say you were mistaken and walk out. It's not like there's a security guard on the alert to pounce at the first sign of fraud. If the real person comes in later, there's no way to trace it back to you. If you feel that the future of the country and perhaps your life is in danger if your candidate doesn't win, that could be enough incentive for some to risk their career. Assuming they're here legitimately. If they're not, then it wouldn't matter either way.

The risk is low because it's unlikely you'll be caught. It's a bad move for you because you have a lot to lose. Is that the same for everyone though?

Sorry so in this scenario I am going to go to the polling place, pretending to be someone else by stealing their name and address, forging their signature, and I better hope they haven't already voted or don't end up voting later, or else I'm probably going to get arrested and deported from the country and potentially have my life's work ruined, and in exchange I get to maybe fake one vote? This seems like a pretty bad move for me.

Okay, okay

Since we are already rolling down the tracks to stupidville let's run the logic here.

I am immigrant man who is not a citizen. I want to vote but cannot register or legally vote. So I need to scope out someone who is both unlikely to vote and is registered to vote. I would also need to obtain their signature, specifically the one used to register, and learn to forge it. Then I would need to find their polling place, hope this person has no friends in the polling place, give a false name and forged signature hoping it could pass. Then vote. Also hope said person has not already voted or will vote because my efforts will not count either way. Oh and risk felonies while doing so.

Yeah it's as probable as it is stupid.

Timedog

good credit (by proxy)
I know a guy who committed voter fraud voting in place of over 10,000 people. He somehow knew each persons address, name, and polling location. They somehow didn't see him get in line multiple times to vote. They ignored that half the people had already voted.

.........

If you're going to change the god damn rules and make ID a new thing, then first make it very easy and very free to get an ID. If you haven't done that first, then shut the fuck up about changing the rules. Anything less is either racism or placating racism. Its bullshit made up solely to stop people who look like me from voting. Somehow no one cared about ID's until republicans started losing the demographic game.

I think there's enough accusations of intimidation, fraud, etc coming from both sides that we might as well just accept the shitty bed we made this go around and try to improve it next time. Pressure your SOS to improve voting efficiency and security.

I can tell you from living in both urban and rural areas, the security for polling places is much more lackadaisical than you're implying. Signatures are rarely closely inspected on-site.

If there is even a 1% chance we should treat it as an absolute certainty.... or something

Is there any strong reasons she shouldn't call a recount?

I don't know how other states work, but here in Oregon, we put our ballot in an anonymous security envelope, and then into another envelope that we sign. Last election a friend of my wife's signed for her husband's ballot, because he'd forgotten to, and she was dropping them off. It got rejected because her signing of his name didn't match the signature on file. They are are electronically checked.

This actually made me laugh. It is so sad people do not understand this though. It would 100 people voting in different spots 10x to even generate 1000 false votes. They would need to know all of that information. I usually don't, but I will use the word impossible for this.

To even talk about it is somewhat annoying as I can only believe a person think its going on and possible to shift an election.

As a non Americaan, the fact that you don't have compulsory IDs and that this even is some partisan, controversial issue is just weird. How can you prevent people from voting 100s of times if there is no way to check their identity?

It's something I've never understood either, and which has frustrated me as I know several non-citizens who vote without a second thought. But many are very passionate about the topic, and I'm sure they'll be happy to explain their side of it.

Because it isn't needed. Like seriously, we are talking about over 100 million votes. The method that you guys are talking about for voter fraud is almost impossible to happen in numbers near enough (even in individual states) to make a difference.

There is only 1 real way to influence an election and that is by setting up voter ID laws and using it to suppress votes from those you know will vote against your party. Or using some other method to suppress, not add on votes.

Go to a polling place that only cross references via name and address, forge the signature.

This is sad man.. Even if there is voter fraud using this inferior method, it would not be in the scale necessary to decide any election.

So do they have any proof that someone hacked the machines?

Clinton received 7 percent fewer votes in counties that relied on electronic-voting machines compared with counties that used optical scanners and paper ballots. Based on this statistical analysis,

While it’s important to note the group has not found proof of hacking or manipulation

Lie about your status on the registration form, and then go vote with your real name and your real address. If you want specifics, I can give you the name of someone who can do it all for you. He lives in Oakview and is a prominent community activist.

Yes, the ballot would be thrown out if they bothered to follow up and investigate your status. But this is California. They won't.

I dunno about other states, but PA doesn't connect the voting machines to the internet. You would have to physically hack the machines in a state with a Dem governor.

I don't think there's any machines in the country that connect to the internet. That just seems like it'd be ripe for fraud.

ID isn't mandatory?

I recall at least bringing my passport (no driver's license) when voting for Trudeau. I'm not sure exactly what the rules are in Canada.

Any crackdown on voter fraud is only going to hurt the Democrats in the long run.

It was really disappointing on election day to see lower class voters having to jump through hoops to be able to vote in Connecticut. The system badly needs reform.

Yeah, it doesn't seem that a lot of people realize this

Nope. Each state (50 of them) setup their own election laws in regards to ID's, ballots, etc.

I'm for keeping/maintaining the integrity of the system, but I know a lot of people who don't share in those ideals.

Surely if there's even a slight chance there could be something to this, a full investigation is warranted. Don't see any good reason why anyone wouldn't want to know for sure either way.

What...? I thought that was extremely unlikely.
But I am no computer scientist. I will be very interested in how it works if this is true.

They admit they have no proof and seem to only be basing it off the weird premise that the polling data was right, which it wasn't.

Whether the election was fraudulent or not, where the fuck is Hillary Clinton? She needs to be speaking out against Trump instead of in hiding.

If there is fraud it needs to be addressed and not just dismissed.

Dismissing it will emboldened the hackers and possibly increase the Republican hold on the Senate in two years time.

I know Trump won but getting rid of any doubt.

The best thing Trump did during this campaign IMO, whether he won or lost, was him entertaining the idea of voter fraud being a possibility, so more people would be aware of it, and so the system could be fixed.

I think you would want someone more convincing and charasmatic than Clinton to do that job. She already failed to convince the nation once, member?

She lost.

Why are so many people just saying "take the L" like this isn't literally the most important question in the world right now.

We know for a fact that outside forces have been openly trying to affect the outcome of the election, via email hacking and fake news sites and pro-Trump bots.

And Comp Sci folks have been screaming bloody murder for *decades* about how bad American voting machines are, and how ripe they are for abuse. This isn't a new concept in reaction to a loss, it's something that's been predicted for years. This was a conversation on Slashdot seemingly every week in the 90s.

To be clear, I am absolutely not saying the election was necessarily rigged.

But to not push hard for an investigation when the results are weird and there's room for reasonable doubt is straight up dumb.

If Trump was a normal politician like Romney, maybe it'd make sense to "take the L" to maintain the illusion of a functional democracy, but Trump's actions since winning show we are way out into bizzaro territory where whether we're going to have a functional democracy remaining in 4 years is already suspect... so push for an investigation.

Probably end up just verifying the loss, which would help a lot of folks sleep at night. But it could change the course of history on the off chance something nefarious is found.

Nate Cohn doesn't think there's much to it https://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/801217804783394816

Metro Wisconsin, where Clinton did well, uses paper; rural Wisc, where she collapsed like everywhere, is electronic.

Can someone explain to me why this means that there certainly wasn't some sort of ballot fixing going on?

Because if I wanted to fix the election to favor the Republican candidate, I wouldn't do anything in the counties that leaned Democrat. Because if there was a sudden surge in Republican votes in a majority Democrat county (especially when someone like Trump was running), it'd look odd.

Instead, I'd target majority Republican counties. I'd wait till the polling places were closed, then I'd submit a bunch of extra votes from registered voters who hadn't voted. If anyone noticed, they'd just chalk it down to Republicans having a fire lit under them (due to being pro-Trump/anti-Hilary), and thus more people in a red county turning out to vote.

'Course this would collapse like a deck of cards if there was a recount and people compared the electronic records with sign-in sheets, but I'd just hope there was no recount.

(If someone already mentioned this...whoops, didn't read the entire thread, it's too long.)

Is it actually possible to hack the electronic ballots? I thought they had no network connectivity. Could someone walk up to a electronic ballot and hack it locally to count, say, an extra 1000 votes?
