Hinako Shimizu's arc in Silent Hill f is shaped by the Japanese women's rights movement of the 60s as she musters the courage to combat her repression

Funny how people see something feminist in it, but the strong women in the movie were begging the T-800 for help and would have failed without him :messenger_tears_of_joy:

woke in right course maybe? some of us, doesn't like woke because shallow and forced characters.
just wait and see, or if You really defensive, watch youtube first, then judge Yourselves, nobody force You to like it or not.

Not sure if I can get into this. Silent Hill usually focuses on internal struggles with a theme that can move one way or another depending on the person experiencing it. Even SH4 was able to get that core esthetic right.

This feels too socially focused vs internally focused. Like can it really work to see a horror representation of how she feels about her current era? Maybe it can but I can't see myself that interested in it. It feels a bit too generic, that the story that could be told wouldn't leave as big an impact as previous games, which has been a big issue with SH games released after 4. Most have felt like generic horror games, not understanding what Silent Hill is. This at least sounds like it gets what the place is, but not an interesting reason to be visiting it.

Maybe it will be more like Rockstars version of feminism in Red Dead 2, and you can hog tie them, drag them through the city on your horse, then feed them to the crocs.

Imho if that feminist talk is just smoke screen for western reviewers game wont suffer a thing, if on the other hand pushing agenda will be top priority of the dev team(instead of simply game's quality being top priority as it always should be) then game will definitely not be as good as it could be(doesnt mean it will be 2/10 trash, but might just be 6 or 7 instead of 9/10, we will know at launch so still plenty time left.
I don't believe there will be any agenda, but the subject matter will certainly be feministic in nature. Something that puts a spotlight on gender roles, male oppression, child abuse, sexual violence etc. I highly doubt it will be woke. There will be no girl bosses, "you go girl" or "fuck the patriarchy" vibes, but it is going to be a female centric horror story. She is not a school girl, just so we can protect her or imagine her in a bikini. The subject matter will likely make most men uncomfortable.

There is no smoke screen. Western media might choose to selectively highlight the bits that suit their agenda, but I don't think they are deliberately being played by Konami. If those are the themes they want to explore, then those are the themes we are gonna get. We shouldn't delude ourselves into imagining it to be something else

The Idea or theory that the Gaming muse YT channel had from the original teaser was way more appealing and exciting. (something related to the Nukes)

This, however while not being defensive about it, I'm very skeptical, especially from a studio with zero track record.

regardless... this game could be victim of both sides (like the last of us 2 was)

Ahh, feminism, back in early 1970s was last time japan was at over 2,1 birthate(2,14 in 1972), needed for keeping replacement of population, nowadays when it won and corrupted mind of japanese women japanese birthrate is crazy low.
Even woke and lefist af cnn had to make article about it:

Ofc their conclusions were extremly stupid, but thats nothing new, they cant blame feminism for crumbling of society/countries for obvious reasons-its opposite to their worldview, but guess what- no1 wants to wife up/have children with those masculine af and argumentative corporate bossbabes(thats what happens to almost every woman chosing their career instead of family/children) so ofc birthrate plummeled to the ground and will keep going lower and lower :P
It's feminism, work life balance but most critical of all and really the only that matters is access to contraception and abortions. If God comes down and bans contraception and abortions the birth rate will sky rocket back to where it was before such technology was invented. I'm not saying the tech should be banned I'm just saying it is what it is.

The writer is Ryukishi07. And his output is as Japanese and complex as they get. We should treat everyone at NeoBards as just people executing the writer's vision with Konami oversight. This will be authentically Japanese through and through. Don't lose faith
Yeah, I trust him. Higurashi was really tense

I don't think anybody cares about what PCGamer has to say about anything. Also learn to use the Quote function OP and don't put the whole article.

Most don't even know that "woke" is a predominantly African-American term from the 1930s that is meant to maintain awareness of racial prejudice or discrimination...so racism.

Which ironically people today use the term to actively discriminate against others whether they belong to a generalized group or just people they either do not like or disagree with.

----------

As for the game itself if the timeline uses some elements of how Japanese Women were expected to behave or the darker side of their society is reflected in enemy designs or the story then I think Silent Hill is moving in the right direction. As it's supposed to be this unnerving inner look at a person's inner turmoil and Psychosis.

Silent Hill 2 had great allusion to this with the characters, James Sunderland and how Silent Hill manifested in all these characters by feeding on their pain, guilt and resentment. In some cases "Silent Hill" feels like an otherworldly being and in others it's just powerful emotions like a cascading waterfall or adding gasoline to an already raging fire.

Most Silent Hill games either involve occult rituals that cause terrible things to happen or it's spiritual trauma so great it warps everything's perception of that trauma to great effect.

Given the trailer's it's pretty clear that Hinako is not completely innocent and we will find out what that is end of September. Big Fatal Frame vibes.
There are obvious hints that Hinako is already dead or has "split" from herself. May even be possible that she is the one that murdered the whole village, imagining them to be monsters, drugged by that Fox cult. But that would be too straight forward a plot and the trailers could be misdirecting. I'm sure it's something even more layered, meta and twisted.

Not sure why people can't see past one article and look at it in context of every trailer that preceded it.

Actually, I take that back. I know exactly why. The f word.

I have no concerns with where the story would go. Gameplay though. Seeing some red flags… finally getting to accept the hit-stop, but at least one outlet is complaining about straight up jank, where some hits simply don't register, leaving you unsure and confused. May be par for the course for silent hill, but the last remake had rock solid combat mechanics and precision. Would be a shame to regress. That's the stuff that worries me.

This thread was created to purposely stir up shit. My first comment in the thread "I'm obligated to hate it now" was poking fun at the obvious bait.

People who would not play the first new mainline Silent Hill in over a decade because of a single theme was not genuinely interested in the game in the first place.

Bold prediction: the game comes out and literally no one bats an eye because it isn't feminism through the lens of a western woketard.

Not an expert on Silent Hill. But what's the lore on if it chooses you. Thought it was cause of the town or the chosen one like heather. But F throws that out the window and it's just boo! now.

This is an awesome angle to take for the story, and the exact kind of authentic storytelling experience we ask for from Asian creators. It's something uniquely Japanese, but something that still holds universal resonance and meaning.

I am sure GAF is going to lose its fucking mind over it though, because woke or some shit like that

I play it either way because I'm gonna pretend it's a Fatal Frame game and she's taking pictures of the SH entities with an old camera.

PC Gamer just desperately making things up for clicks now?

The games setting was moved to Japan because Konami thought the franchise had gotten too "Western"

They hired ryukishi07 to write the script because they wanted to firmly root it in Japanese horror

They have a Taiwanese studio developing the game

The game looks more like the Siren or Fatal Frame franchises than a Silent Hill entry

If this is woke them I'm the biggest Biden supporter who ever lived

But that's ignoring the problem of the current day. KCD 2 caught so much flak for having one optional gay scene and one black man in Eastern Europe.

The general audience is becoming less and less capable of seeing nuance or brushing off topics that they don't approve of. Did that affect KCD 2 sales? Probably not. But unlike KCD 2, these controversial themes are likely a constant undercurrent in this game.

Bold prediction: the game comes out and literally no one bats an eye because it isn't feminism through the lens of a western woketard.
Here's the catch. 99% of the game's coverage post release will be by these western woketards and they will fixate on whatever aspects speak to them the most. There will be celebrations galore and proud declarations of how the f actually does stand for feminism. How is a regular dude without a nuanced view of the world gonna react? Someone like you, who appreciates the nuance, needs to spread the word. Not someone like me. I am the western Woketard that will celebrate the f for feminism. With no shame too!

If your prediction succeeds, then yeah we all can enjoy a good story. If it fails, but it is still a damn good story and you love it, be prepared to bring your soapbox

If remember correctly didn't Mass Effect and Dragon Age Origin had same option? There wasn't issue back then, why its issue now?

A combination of people overreacting in conjunction with the hardline stance Vávra took when his studio was criticized for the lack of inclusivity in the original game.

The pre-release KCD2 drama was equally stupid. But western studios, not Warhorse, created this problem by "wokeifying" their games in recent years. It caused consumers to lose faith and immediately assume the worst when they hear certain things.

Silent Hill f is too niche to generate that level of fake concern thankfully.

Outlets like PC Gamer might do that if they think it will drive traffic, but I think you're giving them too much credit. What matters is if there is truly egregious stuff and the general gaming community picks up on that. That is unlikely to happen.

Those games were well before wokeness went completely bonkers and Microsoft did shit like this:

Now thanks to the madness hitting its peak around 2021/22 right after TLOU 2, Covid and BLM, we are in a phase where everyone tired of the constant lecturing and guilt tripping about DEI has become hypersensitive to anything that seems artificially injected. They don't have a problem with homosexuality, but they suspect forced representation of it behind the scenes.

There is essentially a lack of trust between producer and consumer. Is it out of genuine passion to tell a specific story or totally made up to push an agenda?

It will balance out eventually, but we are still in peak anti-woke phase for a few more years at least. Depending on the political climate in the future, who knows? It may even become the new normal.

Agree with all of this.

Only point of difference I'm raising and am concerned about is it won't just be PC gamer come launch. But IGN, game spot, game informer, euro gamer, push square etc… These outlets are all getting less relevant with time, but I don't know. If quoting one outlet's interview can generate so much concern on GAF, what does that look like during launch cycle? How would it look in review threads? Only time will tell…

I have yet to see anything woke from a japanese dev

I'm sure it will be fine
I mean....when a person making the game is literally telling you its shaped by the women's rights movement of the 60s, at some point maybe some of you need to define what the fuck you mean by "woke"

That is as woke as you get, in fact most of the shit many on here called 'woke' rarely had anyone from the team out right come out and be like "its shaped by this movement of activism" etc many times people just assumed it, this game has someone literally telling you its based on this, so I'd say its "woke" by default.
