History question: why has Japan been such an outsized exporter of culture and technology, relative to other countries?

Having been in Japan, I wouldn’t say it’s huge there. At least it doesn’t appear so. I’m sure it has its fans but Japan looked like its own thing.

Greeks made important contributions to philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. Ģreeks were known for their sophisticated sculpture and architecture. Greek culture influenced the Roman Empire and many other civilization even to this day.
I would also argue made a much bigger impact in today's world.

Japan culture became about work ahead of family. Reproduction rates slowed.
Mid to upper class America followed this trend. There may be some reason those two trends go together.
It is worth noting that music hasn't been a major Japanese export. It's largely the visual mediums.

Nailed it. Their culture is fucking nuts. Their work ethic is second-to-none. They value hard work, and success. We value fat bodies, criminals, and identity politics. Amazing how the results differ.
Streetwear is the main style of dress in Japan. Companies like Human Made, Neighborhood, Undercover, Cav Empt, BAPE and others are among its most popular clothing brands. I’m just saying that much of what Japan exports, with the exception of anime and video games, is heavily influenced by African American street culture.

They also had America's helping hand in the post war rebuild rather than being the stage for a pseudo cold war for decades like Germany. Oh and they were punished far less heavily than Germany
Being so close to America in the post war also meant they became one of the first countries in the world that had a heavy emphasis on globalising for export markets. Thinking what Western countries would be buying and producing it. They got ahead of the curve

The biggest clothing brands by revenue are Uniqlo and G.U. BAPE, which was inspired by American culture in general, failed and has been sold to the Chinese now. All the others appear to be quite niche especially Cav Empt which was co-created by a British. BAPE, Human Made and Cav Empt all have the same designer, btw. There’s barely any information on them as well. Comme Des Garçons, Avail and Shinamura, United Arrows, all the brands under Adastria - all are bigger.

Hell, the ideation and obsession over the restauration of the Roman empire drove politics at the time.
Nigo, the mind behind BAPE and Human Made, didn’t found Cav Empt. Not sure I’d describe Avail as bigger than any of those brands. It certainly isn’t carried by the major high end boutiques in America, while the others I mentioned are. Seems to be popular in Japan, but hardly an export on the level of a BAPE or Human Made or Underground. Though it was founded well before streetwear took hold of contemporary fashion, Comme also does plenty of collaborations with streetwear brands, making it apparent that it recognizes the direction in which the market’s trended and still heads. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that just about all of the fashion world, regardless of where it’s bring exported from, is taking cues from American street culture. From Gucci to Stone Island, Nike to Visvim, American hiphop and the street culture it birthed is clearly running through the veins of these brands at a rate no other subculture is. So, I just found it amusing how the OP was framed as if Japan’s exports are original and not sourced from elsewhere.

This is true. Toyotas are typically for people that view cars as appliances. The kinds of people that derive no joy from the act of driving an automobile. Plus their sports car is powered by a BMW engine of all things.
The Subaru WRX STI line got rid of the hatch and hasn't wowed anyone in years, Nissan is only just now thinking about making a 370z successor and the GT-R is 13 years old with a few facelifts, and I appreciate Honda making the Type R for the US but would it kill them to put it on an AWD platform?
JDM is still kind of a joke compared to the US/Europe.

Export? We’re talking about what’s popular within Japan here. Also, Fetwell and Sk8thing co-founded Cav Empt, both of whom worked for BAPE. Sk8thing was also a designer for Human Made and Undercover. In any case, the numbers show that, in Japan, streetwear are niche products.

I will talk only about anime. They are simply different and I don't think anyone can make such wacky and fun stuff like them and their animation style differentiates them very well. If I show you a frame from US or Uk movie you might get confused which one is from which region but anime has a distinct style. Ofcourse they are quite developed too, if a 3rd world country made anime they probably wouldn't have been able to export them very well owing to the lack of resources.

Having a an actual industry behind all those things helps? I mean it wasn't just one studio making shit or whatever, there were and are dozens of companies and an entire culture behind their entertainment industry. Would make sense for it to spread easier considering how prolific Japan is, compared to say Korea or India or wherever.

Because they embraced western trade and the importance of the industrial age in the beginning of the 20th century. Imperial Japan had a history of foreign isolation. It's really a combination of the history of Japan and their lack of raw resources. Media is one of their biggest exports and what they are know for. Technology and media is their bread and butter. Japan is very open for foreign trade but less so for foreign immigrants seeking citizenship.

I say the biggest factor is that japanese 'culture' seems to let its imagination run more free than western culture. EG: western video games tried for 20 years to provide the most 'realistic' and 'adult' version of video games imaginable (=endless military FPS + sports games + racing sims). Japanese people never cared whether their games were fantastical or stylized, and that some people would consider that "childish". At least they're not boring.
