AHMEDABAD: Almost a week ahead of the Israeli consulate visit to Gujarat to sign business and other agreements, a queer clothing outlet at Vastrapur called 'Hitler' has upset residents and the small Jewish community here. The proprietors of the shop, however, do not find the name objectionable as they claim it is a 'nickname given to one of the proprietors' grandfather.

Proprietor of the shop Rajesh Shah claims innocence. "We had put up a cloth banner for over a month saying 'Hitler opening shortly', no one objected to the name then," he said. "Hitler was a nickname given to my business partner Manish Chandani's grandfather because of his strict nature. Frankly, till the time we applied for the trademark permission, I had only heard that Hitler was a strict man. It was only recently that we read about Hitler on the internet. We have spent Rs 40,000 on the banner, couple of other thousand on visiting cards and branding activity. We have run out of money now. We are willing to change the name if we are compensated for the board."

While it is kinda sad that some people who are actually called Hitler cannot use their own name in their own business, it's not like they can't utilize their surname instead for that very purpose.

Kind of hard to imagine people never having heard of Hitler, but then again, people shouldn't be making a stink about the shop name either.

Huh? How is it possible to be that ignorant?

Not to be rude or anything, but I have a hard time believing that one. Yeah, he might be telling the truth here, but wow.

Not really, close to 70 years since he killed himself and not all countries have a curriculum where history is mandatory for all students, that's even if they went to school.

Uh huh. That swastika means nothing I guess.

Swastika as dot for i isn't helping either. I know swastika isn't the symbol of evil in everywhere, but still Hitler and Swastika is rather bad combo.

Why? If he didn't attend school/attended a school where history wasn't taught, it's not at all surprising he wouldn't have known a lot about Hitler.

I'm sure that it was an excuse that they made up.

It has to be, right?

Not really, Indians are generally kinda oblivious to what was happening in Europe in the mid twentieth century (no joke). There was a whole hell of a lot of stuff going on in South Asia at the same time which really overshadows what was happening in the rest of the world when it comes to school history (Gandhi, riots, the British leaving, Partition etc.). Knowing that Hitler was associated with a diagonal swastika doesn't automatically mean that they knew he was a genocidal war criminal.

The swastika is originally a Hindu symbol isn't it? But, of course, combined with Hitler it's a bit too suss.

I understand what you're saying, but you don't need to attend school to know who Hitler was.

Isn't the Swastika a religious symbol in India?

Yeah, it is, but I think it's positioned differently.

yea I guess they don't teach anything about World War II in Indian schools, as India was occupied by the British during that time.

But at the same time it is kind of sad because Indian soldiers enganged both the Nazis and the Japanese during WWII.

Not in that contorted fashion, thats the Nazi flag version of the Swastica. And not as the dot to the letter 'i' in the word Hitler!

Now lets say they didn't realise this and their grandad also loved the Nazi swastica...did detective-gaf just find Hitler?

Haven't there been threads in the past that have shown a staggering number of Americans don't know when the Civil War occurred? It may have only been referring to high schoolers, but the idea that someone hasn't heard the full story about Hitler doesn't seem that outlandish.

Then again, there's a freaking swastika over the "i"...

Right, but it's right-facing and rotated there, like the Nazi mark.

My mistake. That's a little weird, I was ready to believe the owners were just a little ignorant about who he was...but that swastika.

I think specific years are much more difficult to commit to memory than general facts (and arguably less useful). Comparing the year the Civil War occurred to the notoriety of one of the most notorious, if not the most notorious, dictator in modern history is a false equivalency.

History in India is pretty focused on the subcontinent and not on other parts of the world.

I studied Indian history in grade school, there's barely a mention of World War 2. It was focused on the British occupation of India during that time. People here are generally clueless when it comes to anything other than Indian history since they're only taught about that in school.

devils advocate; the swastika could have been added by the people doing the sign because they were all "uh.. he is naming his store Hitler? Really? Lets add a swastika to it and see what he says!"

But since the dude owning the store has no clue he is all "oh that swastika looks cool, my store will be the most fortunate store ever!"

My experience with foreign students when I was in college was that people from certain parts are the world are more ignorant of "western" history than others. Not that they are less intelligent, just that their education focused on different skills and topics.

Even after reading the OP it seems crazy that someone could just get the nickname of "Hitler."
a old guy around here is called hitler
we also have a stalin and a tito (the latter because tito was his godfather, edit: in case anyone wonder, apparently back then when you had 10 or something children born tito would be the godfather of the 10th one, he never actually visited or anything, but he did send some package of stuff each yeah, or so I am told)

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
Yeah, I'd buy his store somewhat if for not dotting the "i" with the swastika... that kind of gives your shit away.

Still reeeeeaaaaaallly hard to buy. Like if you know nothing about Indian history you at least recognize the name Ghandi, right? Seems the opposite would at least be true. Like blah blah blah British Raj blah blah blah some guy named Hitler and a war involving all the powers of the world and a bunch of Jews killed something something something. Like at least some sort of passing knowledge would have been imparted. Just a really hard thing to buy but I guess it's possible.

Combined with that swastika in the logo, this smells fishy

Hitler is actually seen as a positive figure in Indie by lots of people. I read an article about this maybe a year back, and it was pretty interesting. Apparently people have heard that he was a great organizer who lifted his country out of depression, built autobahns, etc.
