Not a fair comparison, bruh

@thread
So how many on Resetera shame-bought it?

On one hand, this shouldn't be surprising because of the IP, but 30 million is still insane. Here's hoping they can build on it.

Genuinely fantastic game too. The way they faithfully recreated Hogwarts and made it feel like an actual "magical" place was really cool.

I'm going to say it. This is an IP that would be perfect for a live service game.

Glad all those award shows and media outlets ignored this game. This shows the importance of those outlets, another words get a job!

Warner also told Variety that Hogwarts Legacy had surpassed 30 million sales as of October 2024.

Shame the boycott took a chunk out of those numbers.
Sales mean NOTHING. What are the all important ENGAGEMENT NUMBERS please? They are the REAL numbers we need to see. Who really makes money on 30 millions sales? Engagement numbers are where it's at. THAT is what Warner's and Avalanche would be most interested in when pushing hard for a sequel...

Part of the reason the game worked so well is because of how far removed it was from the main Harry Potter narrative. We've seen how much Star Wars suffered from being scared to move away from the Skywalkers.

Game was good but there’s a lot of room for improvement. The open world was largely barren and boring. Hope the sequel resolves this. BotW and Elden Ring and RDR2 and Witcher 3 are stiff fcking competition in the open world RPG space.

879k CCU -------> 30m sold

89k CCU --------> Will it sale 3m?
From what I have heard, as a general estimate, Steam total lifetime sales usually reach around 10x the peak CCU. Of course if a game has longer legs then the actual sales will be greater than that.

But anyway let’s assume that’s true for Hogwarts, that means roughly 9M sales on Steam, accounting for 30% of total sales.

That would put Veilguard at 900K on Steam. Do we also think that Veilguard has the same 30% Steam/console split?

My guess is no. 1. because Hogwarts is on Switch while Veilguard isn’t and 2. because Dragon Age originated as a CRPG.

If only Era didn't boycott it, it could have sold 30.1M copies.

Most of them have main character syndrome over there. They have no tangible power to do accomplish anything but most of them think they do and most of them think they're making a difference.

They absolutely hate that they have no power over Rowling and can't use corpos to leverage or use social media to cancel her either.

Whats more, according to Circana, the Switch version is the one that's selling the most. It stays in the Switch top five every month.

I really enjoyed the game and the devs deserve a solid pat on the back and Rowling too for creating such a great universe.

I look forward to another game, but I'm not sure what they will do as exploring Hogwarts won't have the same appeal on a second game as it did the first. They'll need additional locations.

Huge grats to the studio who really took a massive step in game production while also doing it with a care for the franchise rather than just a cheap cash grab. Also were very inclusive to trans in game despite some gaming outlets doing what they could to tank them for something outside of their control.

How much of an impact did the ResetEra boycott and other protests really have on these sales numbers?

I know most consumers don’t even know these discussions are happening, but the memes about the boycott’s failure are pure gold.

Brilliant game, shocking that it took them so long to make a current gen HP title. I’m playing for the first time right now and enjoying it a lot. Good story, like being in one of the books. Combat is active and gradually gets more complex. You can fly around on a broom, game has a lot going for it.

Only miss is no Quidditch. But that’s a nonsensical sport anyway.

nahhhhh

In a year with Zelda, Spiderman 2 and BG3? Are you on crack sir? It was a great game, it was not a GOTY level game even remotely and that is ok btw

There was just no hope for this to get GOTY

I still can't believe this happened.
The moment where they chose a fugly sex toy reviewer which never once reviewed a game for them, to review the largest children's IP in our current culture.

So when when they click on "other articles by the author" it goes right to a list of sex toys.

You just can't make this level of deviancy shit up.
The whole “we refuse to acknowledge this game” BS was the single dumbest thing I’ve seen in mainstream gaming coverage, and that’s saying something.

BTW I swear they updated her bio after the fact to say she reviews video games too. At the time of that review it said she was their sex toy + coffee reviewer.

If I hadn’t already canceled my Wired subscription a couple years ago, I would’ve canceled it then.

Yep, beyond ridiculous. How did their editors think that this was alright.

Ridiculous. I really don't understand how these idiots keep making this mistake. Multimedia synergy is a fantasy.

It was a good recreation of the book descriptions as depicted in the movies and i like it for that but the game part outside of hogwarts was pure open world slop.

Imagine trying to boycott one the few good games with trans representation for being “transphobic.” Truly the most retarded boycott in gaming history. Can’t wait to see them try to boycott gta6 for being racist or homophobic.

It blows my mind that we've gotten this dumb in our society.
