Horizon: Call of The Mountain Review Thread

The thing is, if they put top talent and gave them top money, thats literally taking away all of those from actual ps5 games, that arent niche and will sell in big amount of copies;P
I bet not many playstation owners would be happy if A-Teams from all sony 1st party devs got money and next 3years of time to work on psvr2 game coz instead it could have been ps5 games;p

I agree with this, though from the reviews it seems to me like the problem here isn't really a lack of talent but just a lack of funding to allow for a bigger scope. It sounds like the combat is pretty decent and the few setpiece moments are cool but it's all very linear and over very quickly. With some bigger environments that allow for some exploration, more combat encounters against more enemy types, more setpiece moments, maybe some proper side quests, etc this would have probably reviewed better.

I get it's a niche game for a niche audience and Sony isn't going to invest into some VR exclusive game on the scale of Forbidden West with a massive open world with 60+ hours of content. But IMO 3 years ago Alyx set the standard for the scope that should be expected from a full priced AAA first party VR game, and this ain't it.

I don’t know why a launch game that’s main purpose is to be platform showcase is supposed to compete with one of the best games in the last few years.

If that’s all people care about playing, then I can count on one hand how many games people would be limited to playing over the last 5 years

I don’t know who was expecting that for this game anyhow.

It looks pretty, but I was expecting a higher quality playable experience from a $60 first party game. I'll wait to see how the other launch games look before deciding whether or not to buy it, as I'd like to have something more to play on launch day than GT7 and RE8.

This. I want to try this but considering the reviews and length perhaps ots not worth $60. Wait for sale, play other games maybe........or be weak and buy anyhow??????

So looks good but is ultimately kind of average. Sounds like a Horizon game to me. Hopefully it's technically competent enough to make it interesting as I had to order the bundle with this and VR 2.

The irony.

Are you for real? You seriously believe in your little head that me and Little Chicken Little Chicken , a member that I never even noticed until now are in some kind of anti-PlayStation club and we support each other? Are you seriously that far gone?

If you're so good at digging through other members post history, have a look at mine you absolute nutter. I'm on record stating that I have no interest in VR after trying it out on high-end PC but I might be interested in PSVR2 as I love Horizon series.

Hey, if that Horizon game turns out decent I'll buy it too. :messenger_grinning_sweat: I loved Forbidden West.

I just know that these Sony twats will not commit to VR long term.

You are an embarrassment.

And this shit is why, even though I've got a PSVR2 about to ship, I'm not still sold on console VR. If you took away the VR zealots, people who think ANYTHING in VR is a life altering event, this game would score even lower.

I don't want a stupid ass climbing simulation with on rails combat in a 4 hour game. I don't another rollercoaster horror game, or a 4 hour Star Wars "experience". I want full fledged AAA Horizon, Fallen Order, or Dying Light, etc. from start to finish and we are probably just never going to get there on console.

For every RE8 or GT7 you've got a thousand tech demos pretending to be video games and it sucks for those of us who want traditional games in VR. It's also why VR hasn't caught on nearly as much as it otherwise should have and probably never will. The promise of VR was a lot more exciting than the reality thus far.
My hopes are to get more real games like GT and RE village as well

That's like saying my new 30K leafblower is cheaper than my new 25K toaster.

I can't understand how anyone can splurge on these toys.

But I am talking about the price of Horizon the game, or is it included with the headset?

There's a bundle for 650 EUR that includes the game:

And I don't know why expecting a $60 first party launch game to a $550 piece of hardware to be more than a linear 6 hours long experience is considered to be unreasonable.
Not to mention Alyx might arguably be the highest quality VR game, but it's hardly the biggest and most content packed one, so making something that's similar in terms of scope and content isn't crazy. Hell, Asgard’s Wrath is twice as long for the main story alone.

But whatever, I'm not the target audience for this anyway. If there's really a massive audience waiting to spend $1000 on hardware to buy short $60 experiences then good for Sony.

The game was made for VR newbs and is being reviewed by people that have experience in VR.
Seems like a nice "first steps" in VR within a beautiful world. PSVR1 did the same with VR Worlds. Average.
Basically an acclimation game because the tech is new for many. Anyone who looked at the vids and thought this was meant to be Horizon 3 just missed the intention. I do think the Astrobot devs could have done the introduction better, but whatever. Now bring Killzone Guerilla, enough of this foreplay.

I don’t know who is buying PSVR2 SOLELY for Horizon.

The game is $50 with the bundle, around 7-8 hours, and is the most visually stunning game in VR and a title that those without heavy VR legs can ease into. I don’t know when 8 hour games suddenly became unacceptable but that’s a shame if that’s a reason why someone wouldn’t play certain games.

Ya’ll are making this to be something it was never pitched as. There are other longer titles people can play like Saints and Sinners or Song in the Smoke.

my bass boat is almost 100k. My wife and I own a Cirrus SR22. Gaming is the cheapest hobby I have.

I cannot believe I'm going to say this...Kotaku US had a pretty solid review of the headset -

It aligns with how I feel about PSVR2, if you're not fully in bed with PS, don't bother and you'll be missing out on all the PC VR releases etc. The headset and game have issues e.g. no speakers, tech demo, weight/soreness of VR helmets and constantly looking up in a climbing game, basically mandatory charger another US$50, no backwards compatibility with PSVR1, tethered and not wireless etc.

The hardware and price point for the headset are quite nice but do not compare to high end VR without the need for PS5. One has to wonder how things like PSVR2 will be affect when the Apple MR/AR headset drops. PSVR2 killer is my opinion. If I was a dev/studio looking to port or create a VR game I'd put my money with Apple or Meta without the need for one specific gaming console. I feel like Sony could have really embraced Open VR standards or help create them etc. Another avenue and not limited the life of the product either. The same issue is likely to plague other walled garden VR products e.g. Apple.

Review of the game -

If you’ve played any Horizon games, then you know the combat can get a little wild and hectic, so much so that a direct copy in a VR environment might be more nausea-inducing than anything else. But in trying to make the experience not a total vomit trip in VR, Call of the Mountain makes too many sacrifices. I deeply want the experience of needing to navigate a combat space with these creatures in a way that feels alive and unpredictable — like it does in the main games. I’d have loved a broader choice of weapons to use, with opportunities for stealth and cover. This is likely to be an ok experience as an extended tutorial for VR newbies, but the thrill I get from playing Half-Life: Alyx or Boneworks is nowhere to be found in the combat of Call of the Mountain, and it’s a shame.

Call of the Mountain is only for PS5 VR newcomers and completionists
Horizon has a killer setting, and in some ways Call of the Mountain manages to bring it to life. At various points, particularly during long climbing sequences, the impressive tech of the PS VR2 let me feel like I was actually in this world. But when the action starts it feels too rigid and too scripted, which is the opposite of what I seek in VR. It is not simulating the reality of this world, it’s just feeding you little vignettes with cutting-edge tech. Call of the Mountain has some fun sequences, and it’s definitely worth trying if you get the chance, but it’s hard not to feel disappointed by all its untapped potential.

This is really my main gripe with VR games, they're just gimmicky and not long lasting. I wouldn't play these games twice, let alone dozens of times like console campaign/solo games or hundreds of times like console multiplayer games. So why would I drop US$500-1K for a few titles I'll likely play once and never again while being locked into Sony only releases forever?

What does proximity to launch have to do with quality?
Most launch games are never a 9/10 and mostly graphical showcases because devs who are first party rush games to get them ready for launch rather than fine tuning/making the experience unique and worthy of a 9/10.

Demons souls got a 9 but it was a remake.

Idk why anyone has to explain this to you.

I lost it at mandatory charger.

I lost it much earlier at the no sound part lololol. Can’t take this shit serious. What a bunch of wankers. 🥹. That post is one of the most inaccurate and misinformed things I’ve seen in my entire life, and I’ve seen a lot so far.

why is everyone saying its shit, I thought 8/10 was a good game- ya'll are nuts here lol
To be fair, most 7.5-8 out of 10s are the headlining title for a AUD$950.00 peripheral.

In any case, this seems like a good graphical showcase for the system. I'd personally go with GT7 or RE8 as my killer apps, but this still looks like a decent little title worth grabbing at a discount.

This really doesn't look to be good enough for the money.

If Sony are going to utilise one of their tentpole franchises for VR then they need to be doing better than this.

Should have put the money towards getting valve to port Alyx.

VR newbies? I'd wager a large portion of early adopters had the first PSVR or at least have tried the Quest line of headsets.
Most casuals curious about VR would probably have picked up a Quest 2 already.

This whole post was straight trash! Darn near every sentence. Like this maybe the worst post of the week on GAF. Tech demo? VR headset soreness? Mandatory charger? Like wth man.
