this movie is so stupid. I guess I was mildly entertained in the beginning? can't really recommend giving it a watch unless you want something to put on in the background

currently watching this rn:

not good. was thinking of turning it off but eh, decided to leave it on and just do other shit while it plays

idk why its so damn hard for people to make decent vampire movies

I love I Am Legend by Richard Matheson

HATED the movie
To say it was loosely based on the book would be being generous. If they didn't have the same name you would be hard pressed to guess it was an adaptation rather than a generic vampire story with a couple of borrowed elements. It's a bad film, and even worse when you compare it to the source material.

Book Spoilers

Robert Neville being the last man alive was a good twist. I loved how bleak the book ending was. I hate how Hollywood found that too dark and instead just made it so there are survivors. RIDICULOUS

Did anyone see Nosferatu? What did you think?

I thought the cinematography and atmosphere were top notch. The rest was average. I found it entertaining for sure.

Stellar production, arty as fuck, enjoyed it but was a bit meh overall, I'll not rewatch..

Sinners on the other hand, now that's a fucking AAA vampire movie absolutely loved it.

Finally got around to watching Smile with my daughter (she's 12 lol and I've turned her into a complete horror nut) last night, she's been pestering me for ages to watch it so relented, not a bad show tbh, some nice jumps, cool wee story, class monster action bit at the end, so looking forward to watching Part2.

If anyone has any good recommendations for Horror I can watch with the daughter specifically with no sex scenes or sexual innuendo shit, can handle the gore, frights etc, I think our next watch has gotta be the stellar 30 Days of Night, been years since I watched it, loved the original comic and was overjoyed when they announced they where making a movie and boy did they did a bang up job, not a fan of the sequels

The autopsy of Jane doe. This one I enjoyed, creepy morgue setting and minimal cast for the most part. 7/10

The unholy. Not quite as good as Jane doe but a reasonable watch. 6/10

Watched The Monkey yesterday

Jesus that was a bad movie. Some fun deaths, but story and characters werent great at all.

I wouldnt call it horror, but more of a comedy with horror elements

Jane Doe was pretty great

Havent watched Unholy, will give it a go

Watched Fear Street 3 (1666). The first two acts of this movie could have been an email.

The last act was great though.

Has your daughter seen The Lost Boys yet?
Classic horror movie, and isn't too sexual.

Watched Bring Her Back over the weekend.... what a fucking ride. Damn.

It reminded me a lot of Hereditary, just for how bleak and dark it is, very opressive feeling movie that you cant enjoy without feeling a sort of depression almost.

The ending sucked however, I was kind of dissapointed with it. Overall a great film but damn writers need to come up with new ideas to end horror films lol

I really enjoyed it. The moment the woman jumped in the swimming pool and literally exploded I knew what tone the rest of the film was going to take.

Recently got around to finally seeing Late Night With the Devil - thought it was great. Saw Final Destination Bloodlines on Saturday, incredibly average.

Good to hear, been looking forward to this one.

What did you think of
the knife scene
to me it hit harder and was as out of the blue as anything in Hereditary. I agree about the ending. Maybe they can make a sequel about the cult. That was pretty horrific.

Dark. Depressing. how a horror film should be

Massively disagree on that.

Particularly as it implies downbeat, usually nihilistic endings. Which to me usually just show that the writers are just too fucking lazy or uncreative to write a compelling third act, pull off a convincing twist or deus ex machina etc.

Not that I'm saying that everything needs a neat resolution, but just that a cheap-shot ending is always a cheap-shot. Its not daring, its literally the path of least resistance.

The principle is basically that outlined in the idea of the "prestige". The real trick is digging your characters into a pit so deep that escape seems impossible, and then getting them out without making it seem contrived or artificial. That takes real skill.

Who wants to be depressed by a movie? Horror fiction, of all genres, trades on escapism because fundamentally the appeal is testing oneself against the inevitability of our own mortality.

Life is downbeat, after all.

Disagree with your disagree. It's not lazy. Not all art is beautiful and uplifting I don't like horror movies with happy endings. If want that I'll watch an action movie where the hero defies all odds and saves the world

It doesn't have to be upbeat. It just has to go somewhere other than the obvious.

Which I'm sorry to say that it seems very few modern horror movies tend to do.

Just out of interest, what are some of your favourite recent horror movie endings?

How recent we talking? I liked Cuckoo, Possessor, Barbarian, The Medium, Incantation. The ending to Bring her Back I could live with. I don't remember the ending to Longlegs, Didn't care for the ending to Oddity. I didn't watch Nosferatu or Sinners.

Watched a few oldies recently. Suspiria, The Beyond, and Nightbreed. Top quality, the lot of them.

I also watched Sinners. Very good. Best vampire horror in quite a while IMO.

Side Tangent: I despise Gen Z/Late Millenial horror like mascot horror and shitty/low effort ARG/analog shit. Shit isn't scary and barely works as a coherent narrative.

I am convinced some people have too much bitch in them finding anything in those two categoeries as being scary. They are riddled with tropes, shitty execution in writing and art, and are generally fucking clownshoes.. 99 percent of it boils down to "What if pop culture liscended things I loved when I was younger was actually evil and cursed.... omg! What if it is all in my head cause bad shit happened to me or by me??? So scary!".

Some literally look like they were created is MS Paint with shit animation tools and the writing and voice acting are basement shit. And that's not even mentioning the proliferation with AI art and voice acting. Now, people with no understanding of creative production nor training can shit out projects that are just terrible. Typing words into a command prompt on an ai service does not make you an artist or writer.

I mean atleast the underground horror creators of the 80s, 90s, and 00s swung for the fences in practical effects department and camp avant-garde grittiness (with wildly mixed results). They needed to man a camera, get people together to film the shit. And maybe it was also the want of spectacle that even in their shittiness, they were entertaining with how over the top it was. Splatterpunk comic artists had to actually draw the comic and then publish it. Horror writers needed something polished and relatively unique to have a publisher look at them.

Family is out of town for the week so that means salacious, titty filled campy horror films for me. All of these are off amazon, I believe.

Girlhouse was surprisingly good, not really scary but hits all the slasher tropes, is led by a STUNNING final girl in Ali Corbin (though you gotta go back to American Reunion to see her in all her glory). But almost all the other girls are equally as cute and much more naked. Not gonna win any awards but made me happy. As internet porn is now waaaaay more pervasive than it was when this film was made, it is only more topical.

Slashlorette Party. This was not great. Has a decent set-up with an unhinged bachelorette and her toxic fiancée, but the kills weren't great and the pay-off, such as it was, fell flat. Still, has a NICE stripper duo scene that checked my boxes :P

Splatter Beach is too low budget even for me, and I watch some seriously cheap shit. But you get very little of the monster and the ending massacre is told through song and random scenes of the film because they clearly ran out of money. Still, couple pretty cute girls in there. But the poster is the best part, alas.

Mad God. Is this a horror? Certainly full of INCREDIBLY disturbing imagery. As a stop motion fan though, it is impressive. Far too artsey for general consumption, but worth a watch if you are into lovecraftian stuff and head scratching visual assaults.

It's a must watch, no matter what

Finally got around to watching this with the other half this afternoon.....

oooooooooh fucking boy where to start. It's pretty dire honestly, I really don't understand the people who say this is some kind of genius. I spent most of the time squinting / confused what I was even looking at.

Probably one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen to be honest.

I watched this back when it was being hyped but I wasn't really paying attention to it. It was on for background noise really. I'll have to give it a fair shot but yeah not very memorable from what I remember

Hit up the 4 ep animated Uzumaki on HBO.......and now I really need to take a shower. That was some creeeepy ass shit.

Moving on to MAXXINE, which I have high hopes for. Enjoyed Pearl and XXX quite a bit. Mia Goth is a treasure.

Hereditary is a good shout. Should scare the crap out of your kid 🤣

So MAXXINE was a bit of a disappointment, leaned far too much into 1980s atmosphere and quirky characters than an actual plot. No bad but for a movie about porn actresses getting killed it was far too tame.

Final film is Companion. Pretty fun, definitely go in knwing as little as possible as there are some good little twists early on. It's a good script, written smarter than the characters in it which is always a fun experience when there are 'smartly written' characters making dumb choices that have logical outcomes. It's not quite Tremors level as it stumbles a little at the end.

I gotta say, the little "take a breather" ads HBO Max is splicing into their films is about as horrible a way to do it as possible. Not a 2-3 minute commercial break where you can actually get up and pee, but an aggravating pause in the action to interrupt the flow. Ugh, heading straight into a streaming hellscape.

I watched Companion at the theater. I really enjoyed. I wouldn't classify it as horror though

Watched Barbarian the other night. Some of it was excellent - the atmosphere, the general sense of foreboding, the general unease from not knowing where it was going, and some really fun shifts in mood when perspectives change. Sadly it goes downhill once the 'explanation' starts to really become the focus, doesn't make a whole lot of sense and all the dread evaporated.
I would definitely say its worth watching, but only if you are going in blind.

A quiet place: day one

Better than I expected, I enjoyed it more than the second film. An extra scene at the end to tie it into part 2 would have been good, like a 6 months later type of thing.

This has to be in my all time top 20 maybe even top 15

it took me by surprise, quite a good movie. I wasn't 100% sure what was going on with those interviews. I thought initially it was showing like a real case before then moving into a reimagining or something, but yeh. It had a pretty good ending.

Watched Smile2 at the weekend, damn that's a great wee series, really ramped up the tension with an absolutely stellar opening, loads of great jumps and even though I called the ending right at the start, it was still great, can't wait to see where he goes with Part3

I have the add the entity/demon/whatever is an absolute cunt, what it does to the victims is proper nitemare material, definitely one of the worst bastards out there

Just finished watching it, still not entirely sure how much was real and how much was imaginary. I wasn't sure if I was going to bother with it as I didn't think much of the first but I actually enjoyed it a fair bit.

Yeh I really enjoyed this one, and the lead actress was superb. By all accounts this sort of movies should just be average but it's done very well.

Another movie I can't rate high enough (it's more thriller I guess?) Is Strange Darling. Very very good.

Another worth checking out is Cuckoo, very weird but enjoyed it.

Just watched Arcadian with nick cage and the watched with dakota fanning.

Arcadian has the roots of something really good, the monsters are weird and creepy, the acting is pretty good, and obviously nick cage, it's just missing something to push out that last little bit.

The watched was a pretty good, trapped in the woods with monsters film, even if the ending is fairly foreseeable.
