I used to live in the U.S. consulate mentioned in the article. It housed American families as well as political/military officers. When I was younger, my family lived in Jiddah for several years. My family was not military - my dad worked for Deloitte & Touche as a consultant to the Saudi government. This was in the earliy 1980s, well before any political strife existed.
