I used to live in the U.S. consulate mentioned in the article. It housed American families as well as political/military officers. When I was younger, my family lived in Jiddah for several years. My family was not military - my dad worked for Deloitte & Touche as a consultant to the Saudi government. This was in the earliy 1980s, well before any political strife existed. It's a beautiful country; a shame that it's now growing more and more conservative. It wasn't always like this...

CNN's article denies hostages were taken.

(CNN) -- Five Saudi militants attacked the U.S. Consulate in the Saudi port city of Jeddah, but Saudi security forces killed three of them and wounded two others, the Saudi Interior Ministry said.

A U.S. Embassy spokeswoman in Riyadh said no Americans had been taken hostage or wounded but that two members of the local staff had been injured.
