House of Cards S5 |OT| What’s said in the family, stays in the family - Netflix 5/30

Guilty White Male Mods Gave Me This Tag
I'm a few episodes in this new season so far and I just want to say I find that writer guy who slobs all over Claire to be extremely boring and annoying. What is the purpose of his character? He seems to have no purpose and such a pointless character. Every time he comes on, I get a little annoyed haha. Anyways, no spoiler... just wanted to share that. Maybe he becomes a more important character later, but ever since he joined the show, I've wondered about the purpose of his existence.

I think I'm done with this show*

*I will probably watch the next season because it's free on Netflix but I will continue to hate me for that.

Seriously. Didn't like the outcome at all.

I also don't care about Claire.

If the next season was just Claire walking up and down a hallway I'd still watch it.

Claire. 😍😍😍

this season was stupid

it's like there's nobody in charge of making sure the show follows some coherent plot

they just took a bunch of talking points from the 2016 news cycle and slapped them onto house of cards characters

Question about episode 6 and later.

How does it work with who is President. Claire is acting President because she is Vice and there is no real President. But what is Francis then now? He acts like the President lol and commanding people.

My least favorite season, this series should have ended a while ago and this season proved it. Same old ass formula where Francis does shady shit, Doug covers it up, just when you think he's going to get caught, he somehow avoids it, then Doug takes the fall for him anyways. Same old shit, and this season didn't even have some type of major story arch halfway through, so it just felt like the story line dragged on and on and on.

They touch on that in that episode and later ones. She's president but he still barks orders and it confuses people.

It was a two parter.
First part was get elected, second part was survive the scandals.

I thought this season was pretty bad. It's been on a decline since the beginning with last season finally showing a little bit of life, but it's all gone now.

Total season spoiler:
I'll just push the Secretary of State down a flight of stairs right after she gets immunity to testify against me. I know I'm safe to do this because even the fucking writers of the show seem to forget about it right after it happens.

Awful.

Awful, dull season. The stakes were higher than ever on paper, but everything felt so flat, mundane, boring.

Put a bullet in it.

Loved it. Season 1 is still unparalleled, but this was maybe just a notch below season 4 to me, which was a return to form after a kind of weak season 3 (which was still good TV). Mark Usher and Jane Davis were excellent additions to the cast of characters, especially the latter. Such a great quiet energy. There's really nothing out there like this show for me and I look forward to the next season, which I can only assume will be the last.

thought it got better after the tremendously boring election plot line, but then it fell off a cliff again with the final episodes.

weakest season so far.

so for those of you who finished it: who thinks frank was bluffing when he said
he will kill claire?

He wouldn't have been on the way out if he wasn't an asshole to the Hispanic Congressman and didn't leak all that information.
It really just doesn't make sense for someone that has had this as their end goal to just give it up so easily.
I agree with you, however it depends on one thing: did Frank threaten
Romero before or after going to that weird cult thing in L.A? because he tells Claire he came up with it while he was there. If he threatened Romero beforehand, then I agree, his manhandling arrogant attitude was catching up with him. If it is afterwards, then even though it was annoying to watch (kinda wish Romero had more of a backbone...they kinda wrote his character to look like a bitch), it was part of Frank's plan, whatever happened,
however Romero reacts
Being president was never his end goal, power was. This whole season in particular revolved around people outside the White House deciding how the White House had to operate. Frank would never have been re-elected without the aid he received from private interests. Conway would never have gotten as far as he would have without private interests. Claire would never have been in a position to take over from his without private interests. The whole season was pointing to the Presidency not being the be all end all of power. Frank shooting for the sun and realising he'd actually have more power without the Presidency was pointed at the whole season.

It's not the worst idea for a plotline ever and probably would have worked a lot better in Jane Davis's character wasn't absolutely awful in every single way.
Being president and having Claire as vice president definitely was
Frank's plan, as evidenced by his conversation with her in the S5 finale. Honestly,
there is not a position more powerful than being president, so this season when he was telling Claire about his plan to get into the private sector, I was like, eh. compared to the pres/vice pres idea presented in last season's finale
Stranger Things is safe, it's a pop culture phenomenon at this point. Probably their biggest non-Marvel show.

On-topic, this season has been pretty good so far. I've been taking it slow and I'm on ep 7. Conway bothers me, I don't know if I just don't buy Kinnaman in this role or what but the character never felt quite right to me.
since you sound knowledgable on this, lemme ask you: how exactly do Netflix OGs make money? is it just dependent on how often their shows are streamed? there aren't ads or anything so where is revenue generated?

This season was so goddamn good from start to finish that I'm a bit surprised some have issues with it. I don't think the show has been this good since season 1.

I think if he absolutely had to (to stay in some sort of position of power) he would. I can't remember what episode it was, I think the finale or penultimate, but he told us he wanted power more than anything else in the world. Even Claire. We already seen throughout the entire series, he more or less uses her for his own gain. He always wanted to be the one to call the shots, and now that Claire is (and he isn't getting pardoned now), he is going to be out for blood. I would assume he'll go after her with all the dirt, but might end up killing her for his own gain.

yeah, he did say
"maybe" he loves power more than he loves claire, but as this is a fictional show trying to make itself look real (as ridiculous as several of the scenarios of the show has already been) as evil the motherfucker he is i don't think he has it in him to kill her and if he does, for someone like him i don't even see how the ends will justify the means, and not only that
, but what even is power if literally everybody hates you?

This show has become such a messy web of nonsense that I'm struggling to care anymore. I mean the Underwoods are terrible people who are barely more than cartoon evil but at least their scheming was somewhat focused and interesting. With this season it felt like they were just spinning their wheels, not in the intended way with the Underwoods scrambling to stay in power but it just felt meaningless because there was nothing to fill the gap of the lack of meticulous politcking. Last season had Francis and Claire going at it and this season had that simmering under the surface but that wasn't meaty enough for it to carry it for me. I liked the idea behind Usher and Davis more than the actual characters (though I do like how they were both uniquely sinister) but due to the nature of their characters as cloaked puppeteers, it wasn't enough.

It was still better than the bizarre attempt to humanize Francis in season 3 but I just don't know how they plan on keeping this going. The finale would have been interesting if it wasn't soured by how this season played out.

Yea Yates has always felt masturbatory self insert. Never liked the character.

HELP! HELP! THE SECRETARY HAS FALLEN!

Okay, that was pretty silly. lol

For one, it wasn't even that high up, so why did it knock her out? Assuming it knocked her out, why isn't he worried about her waking up and telling everyone that he pushed her? Kinda feels like they wrote themselves in the corner and this was the fastest way to remove from her the equation for forever.

I hate the news bits where they use real world pundits. I'm sure it was intended to make it seem more real, but it has the opposite effect on me. Plus these people are so stiff in their delivery.

It's worth pointing out: the showrunner behind Seasons 1 through 4 left.

Season 5 and beyond are being handled by completely new showrunners.

Just started watching, its good they amped up the crazy. Underwood's shenanigan's at the house would be totally unbelievable before Trump, now I'm like "huh yeah Trump would do that"

I think he's the one that can still save Claire. Francis is gone after what he did in the past but Claire can still save herself. However she is too much like Francis. I'm sure she will kill somebody as well (the beheading scene showed she is just as rotten as him) and the series will end with both of them on the electrical chair.

my problem with the Yates character is he's straight up comatose. i like the actor in everything else he's been in but it's like he takes an ambien everytime he's on set for this show

Yeah the dude looks like he could doze off at any minute

Awful character

I am unsettled by these two parachuted characters that have lots of sway, WTF did they come from? pooffff very important characters LOL from where?

It's certainly not as tight as it used to be, and some of the dynamic have been repeated quite a lot, like how he just keeps having Doug Stamper take the fall. But there is a lot of great stuff in this season.

And it still has the main reason to watch this show Kevin Spacey. He is so enjoyable to watch in this show. And the cartoony over the top aspect, is exactly why I love this show. There are tons of cool little characters. I am also a sucker for DC political thrillers, so I guess I was an easy mark.

One thing I defintely don't like is, it appears Frank Underwood is going to be sidelined next season, and Clair Underwood is going to have a far larger role. But, narratively, this might be a good choice, you can't sideline Kevin Spacey. The show will suffer. Clair Underwood is a strong character but the actor is nowhere near as enjoyable to watch as a scenery chewing Kevin Spacey.

It's like a couple of people said earlier in the thread, thank god trump isn't this smart or we'd really be fucked

I'm surprised so many people are liking this season. I'm finding it super boring 5 or 6 episdoes in. Im just tired of the underwoods, their characters, I just want to see them get their comeuppances. You end the 4th season like you do, and this is what we get next? failed

Just finished. The end of Season 4 really felt like it was pushing towards the same ending as the original UK version of the show, but now I really don't know where the hell it's going.

Enjoyable, but it's definitely lost its way a bit - I think, to be honest, the further it has drifted from the vague outline of the original show (which I know most won't have watched) the more it's struggled. I still enjoyed it plenty and am in for next year, though. I hope next year is the last.

Yeah, for someone whose (whole series)
fucking the First Lady, Vice President or PotUS
he lacks any charisma or charm. He feels like that one character sitcoms have who just hangs around the main cast without adding anything at all.

Finished this morning. Thoughts in no particular order:

Glad they brought back frequent fourth wall breaking. I missed Spacey talking to the camera regularly in 3&4.

So... we spent 75% of the season with Frank
pulling all kinds of shit to win an election, just so he could tip off the paper, drag both Zoe Barnes and Rachel back into the spotlight and then just resign the presidency so he can give it to his wife he openly discusses no longer trusting just an episode before?
So apparently if you're in power and people around you suddenly
start taking tumbles down stairways or getting killed in road accidents
nobody thinks it's strange.

What cologne does Tom wear?
I would love to attain instant mostly-clothed sex with every attractive woman I make a lame comment to.
Speaking of which, thank god Tom
is dead.

I am unsettled by these two parachuted characters that have lots of sway, WTF did they come from? pooffff very important characters LOL from where?

Oh yeah! Two highly important influential characters... who haven't been mentioned once in the past four years of the show because reasons.

Love seasons 1-4... definitely down on this season though. Seriously it was so bad.

The big "Reveal"
that Francis was the mastermind behind what may be the dumbest scheme ever
felt so wrong.

After everything they have done he throws it all away
for some vague idea of power beyond the presidency.

Just finished the last episode. I skipped a bunch of stuff in the episodes running up to the finale. Everything felt like I'd seen it all before. Was I supposed to be interested in Hammerschidts story? The audience already knows everything but we have to follow along as he slowky, painstakingly catches up with us.

Everyone was so damn boring. Doug really didn't go anywhere as a character. Tom was annoying as hell. Ms. Davis was a constantly shifting entity so she really had no character.

This was a waste of a once great show. They played it safe sow they could crank out a few more seasons and it showed.

Spoiler for entire season:

Why is Doug pleading guilty to the murder of Zoe Barnes?

what I want to know at this point is why is doug so fuckin loyal to Frank...like, did Frank threaten his brother's family several years back or something? or is it worse and doug would put his own godforsaken family on the line for Frank...

his loyalty is so unbelievable. season 6 premier should be a flashback episode
