How Berlin’s Futuristic Airport Became a $6 Billion Embarrassment

I prefer Germany's decentralised system compared to the UK's where everything is London centric and the rest of the country suffers for it. Hopefully the northern powerhouse changes the status quo.

Berlin is interesting if you are a tourist because of the history which gives Berlin a different vibe than other capitals or as student because everything is way cheaper than in Hamburg or Munich but you aren't stuck at ugly places like Bremen or Dresden.

It starts to suck badly if you want to work for a living.

Whaaaa? I mean, Bremen is debatable, but Dresden is a very nice city and one in which rebuilding after being more or less annihilated during WWII went (mostly) very well.
(Still, I prefer Leipzig, but that probably doesn't have too many fans either.)

Grüne Neustadt and the villes around Bühlau are nice, but other than that? I grew up in the city, but I don't think it's particularly good looking. After living in Hamburg for a few years I don't really want to switch back.

I lived in Dresden for my some time and outside of the city core there is nothing of worth. No jobs, ruins and ghettos.

We have a young engineer here who studied in Dresden and he was so happy that he could leave that shit hole after he went there because the TU Dresden has a good reputation and it's a quite cheap city to live as student just with Bafög.

I'm surprised most of the replies here put the blame only in negligence (both in the planning, building and awarding of the contracts) and won't even dare mention corruption (again, in all sides). The costs of a project don't balloon such an incredible amount just out of regular ineptitude. We're talking about a ludicrous overbudget. The same way Calatrava's projects always scale out of proportion and even when everybody knows this he still gets the contracts. And then he does it again. It's not just a matter of poor management.

I feel like this post deserves more attention.

True teminds me how hypocrite Germany is with corruption and Greece. It's not even strictly illegal in some cases, our government refuses to comply to the EU anti-corruption guidelines. And especially bavarian politicians get very sweaty when this topic comes up. Not that other politicans don't have massive dirt, but Bavaria is somewhat shining.

Okay, I only visited Dresden as a tourist for a few days, so I can't really say how it is to live there. Also, for some weird coincidence Hamburg is one of only two major cities (out of the top 20 by population) in Germany I never visited besides Nuremberg (and yes, I know I need to change that), so I can't even compare that.

But I'm honestly interested how many "nice" cities there even are in your opinions if Dresden is not included in this.

Sure, but ARD/ZDF wasting money on crap like Tatort or The Oscars isn't ideal either. At least they didn't get the rights to the next two Olympics this time, let's see how that'll work.
ARD and ZDF are the only German networks to produce quality content. All the private channels create is scripted reality garbage and the dumbest and cheapest shows possible. Other than that, all they air are US shows that they usually run into the ground quickly with daily re-runs. It's embarrassing.

Really?
R-E-A-L-L-Y?

Why? I want to understand. I need to understand.
Tatort Münster and Tatort Weimar are fucking awesome. Especially if you like random, dark comedies. Not for the lowest common denominator though. Your enjoyment largely depends on your education and upbringing. Münster in particular has lots of commentaries on Christian student fraternities and similar organizations.

Lot of them, big and small. The Venice of the North is only nice when you're a tourist, it has a lit of culture and history and works well to present and preserve it. However under the hood you got huge tensions. Left and right are very strong in tue city and by god don't be close to the city center when Dynamo Dresden has a game. This football club is just plain bad, but it has a huge crowd of vocal and violent fans to the point where Daxony regularly has to hire police from other countries to deal with them on big games.

Auch ein blindes Huhn findet mal ein Korn.

Still, doesn't make up for shit like "Die Trovatos", "Die 50 [random superlative] [random substantive]", "Verdachtsfälle", "Bachelorette", "Adam & Eva" and all that other cringeworthy, braindead garbage.

Stimmt. I've only had a DVB-T antenna in my place for years now, so I never watch any TV anyways. Still if I do, it's only public television and I agree that they have the only quality stuff, and if it's only for the documentaries.

Regarding BER I think the attitude in Germany in general needs to change. As long as the population is against any new large-scale project (or basically against anything new - be it railways, roads, airports etc.) politicians will feel the need to cut corners everywhere. Not saying this is the main reason, but it's one of them. I don't understand the public opinion in this regard sometimes. On one hand Germans are so proud about their infrastructure and let everybody know about it all the time, but right now there letting it decay and are protesting and sabotaging all projects intended on creating new infrastructure.

Well, German produced television stuff is either old people stuff with the same actors for 30 years, super cheap scripted reality shows or art movies with a target group of 10 people.

There is no healthy middle ground for just well made mainstream shows which is not another version of Tatort.

German television in general doesnt have that many highlights. If people already are affraid of what happens once Stefan Raab is finished for good (I mean he is a cool dude and made some good stuff, but he should have ended it years ago actually)

Concerning BER, yeah, well, nothing to add here, its just plain embarrasing (no pun intended) and its not the only one, they opened up an Airport (Kassel I think) without any flights at first, if I remember correctly...

Berlin even tried to get 2024 Olympics but lost against Hamburg (thank god, cause they have an airport
and ST. Pauli :D

Kinda funny that the news only hits GAF now, germans been laughing about that for ages, and raging of course and complaining :D

I agree. Berlin is ok once your too drunk to care. Last time I visited that city I got swine flu just from using the S-Bahn.

Aren't you guys the life of the party!

Berlin is probably in the top three cities in the world for clubbing and dance music but oh well...
