How can Microsoft win back your heart for XB1?

Forget the competition XB1 is lagging behind 360 when that console was about to be launched. Back then 360's tech advantages were clear, the indie love was there day 1 and the launch games were superior, and heck even XBL made a case for itself not mention a name that showed it was a follow up console thus not to confuse the masses. Now, all those advantages leading up to XB1 release are nil.

Question for GAF:

Are you buying a PS4 over a Xbone just because it has better hardware according to tech specs? Do you always buy a console based on raw specs? Do you scoff at Nintendo's attempts to produce a console and you can't seem to comprehend why anyone would use a handheld gaming device? Seriously how is 'desirable' is power to you?

Sony produces better first party exclusives for me personally. Still won't buy a PS4 until next year or later though.

Imo, disconnected would have been sticking with said policies until launch, they didn't.

Let me rephrase what I said with a nice quote:
"The people who say you are not facing reality actually mean that you are not facing their idea of reality. Reality is above all else a variable."

This for me is true. I should have properly said "my reality". I'm pretty sure there are gamers out there who would have enjoyed an XO with all the initial offerings, including always-online, always-connected Kinect etc - I'm just not one of them. And I'm pretty sure that the biggest chunk of this gamer profile % is based in the US.

I want to believe they just cracked their heads around userbase X internet penetration and decided to take an ambitious shot, for example, instead of believing everyone had the same vision of a future gaming reality as theirs. Otherwise, I can't find an explanation. As for the 180, as I said before: massive backlash. Otherwise even Don "can't-afford-it?-buy-a-360" Mattrick would be getting a nice pat on the back.

Sell it for what it's worth compared to the PS4 and remove kinect from the package, make Killer instinct a full retail release with at least 16 characters and a full featured online mode as well as a story mode .... even then I'm still not sold. But that would go a ways towards support.

Support USB perhipherals and have 360 peripheral compatibility no one wants to shell out hundreds for brand new wheels and fightsticks.

I don't give my "heart and soul" to giant corporations. I do however pay money to them for hardware, software and services that I find valuable and germane to my interests. Microsoft has demonstrated not just with the Xbox One but also with the last few years of the 360, that they have little interest in generating real value. Instead they rely on buzz words and marketing to do the work for them. We get the COD maps first, look at all these apps you get (the value!!!) when you pay for gold!! Hell we'll even give you some multiplayer with your Netflix!

Then they spend two years pushing Kinect and really have no games that take real advantage of it, even a major property like Fable (which they seem more than happy to ride it's good name into the ground) they couldn't score a hit. So what do they do for next gen? They put one in every box and jack up the price. Kinect is the new ROB the Robot, and I am not interested whatsoever.

No, games.

And price. And PS+. And power difference. And size. And negative experience with 360; positive one with PS3.

And general PR between companies relating to the next gen consoles (absolutely horrible on the MS side; appearing honest and straightforward on the PS4 side).

Have you played the XB1 launch games? How can you say the 360's was better?

Indie love? When the 360 launched downloadable games were considered an afterthought.

They could start by apologizing, and I mean seriously apologizing as opposed to congratulating themselves for being great listeners.

Apologize for all of the following:

  1. Used games fiasco
  2. Always on fiasco
  3. Investing to keep content off of other platforms rather than adding content to their own
  4. Prematurely abandoning two consoles
  5. Gimping their hardware for the sake of Kinect
Then they could drop the price by $100 and give some proper free games with Live.

Then I'd think about it.

Are you buying a PS4 over a Xbone just because it has better hardware according to tech specs?
Nope, but it helps. Not only has Sony said all the right things about the PS4, just look at how nice it is to be a PS3 owner right now. Its a platform with great support.

Sony has also been forward thinking when it comes to digital downloads and dedicated servers and support for a wide range of peripherals. And of course PS+ makes a mockery of Gold.

Throw in an improved controller, lots of indie and free 2 play game support, hardware that looks to shine with multiplatform titles and the lower price and its a pretty easy choice.

I probably shouldn't be answering this after reading that spew from Phil on GI, but the answer is probably nothing. It's not the first time, but it just confirms: These people have learned nothing, and they're going to try this crap again.

My trust with MS is basically dead at this point. Will I ever buy the XBone? I can't rule that out, but the requirement would be that there are enough exclusives that I think it's worth it for them and them alone(no credit for possible future releases). Timed exclusives don't count, I'll be willing to wait those out. Maybe in 6 years or so, if it drops to $200, they have some great exclusives, and they behaved that whole time.

Somehow I don't think that will happen.

Halo with dedies and 60fps is calling me. Just started playing Halo 4 again after a hiatus, and man does it feel good to kill people with that DMR. I've had some really good games.

Also, I'm pretty sure there will be a badass Plex app for the Bone which will be ass loads better than what is on a Roku or one of those media sticks.

What could MS do? It depends on if you mean win me back with the Xbone being my primary console, or an exclusives machine.

Right now there is absolutely nothing they could do to get me to buy the Xbone as my primary gaming console. The system just isn't going to be a very good fit for multiplatform games do to it's lower power, and that gap will only widen as developers try to do more and more with these platforms.

As for getting the Xbone for exclusives, that just isn't in the cards right now, or for the foreseeable future. However, in this regard they can do things to get me on board in the future. This is, of course, dependent of the system actually having enough exclusives that I actually want to play.

Getting me to buy the system for exclusives really only comes down to two things. The first, and most important thing is to lower the cost of the system to under $400. This would likely be done by removing Kinect, either way, this needs to happen, as I am not paying more for a weaker system. I am willing to pay $400 for a PS4, so I would be willing to pay probably no more than $300 for the Xbone, maybe $350 if the exclusives are good enough. I don't care that the Kinect is included and considered "value", as I couldn't care less about the thing, and so I do not include it in my perceived value of the console. It's not my problem that they chose to go that route with their console. $300-$350 or no buy, period.

The second thing they need to do is actually provide value with XBL gold. As it is, the service is one of the biggest rip off's ever. Instead of providing actual value with the service they put free features behind a pay wall and insist that it is "added value". To me the service is actually quite insulting. It is like if you walked up to someone watching a movie on a DVD player, hit the power button, and then said the only way to turn it back on is to pay a yearly fee. A big step to getting me back on board is to drop all of the free services from their pay service, and add some actual value. If they continue the games for gold thing, and extend it to the Xbone, then that is a big step to getting me to give a damn.

Have you played the XB1 launch games? How can you say the 360's was better?

Indie love? When the 360 launched downloadable games were considered an afterthought.

360 had better variety at launch which included 2 RARE games, actually made by RARE. And of course downloadable games weren't as heavily focused, that was a time when the retail model was still king. But 360 was the console to push indie titles on consoles. Now Sony and MS have switched sides with PS4 having better tech, easier to develop for due to no split memory, easier entry to online gaming with F2P, free games and of course a lot more support.

At this point the only reason one would support XB1 is nostalgia for 360 and Halo.

It needs to have better hardware than the PS4, or a plethora of exclusives I really want. Until it achieves one of those, I won't buy one.

Nothing.

I'm happier skipping the Xbone. I can now write Microsoft off and focus my purchases between Sony and Nintendo.

I'm not really missing out either since they don't have many ips I care for, and they have a history of letting the promising ones rot and die. Then there's the way they just drop support for their current console when a new one is releasing. Have they published a 360 game in 2013? I mean it's only September now.
Oh, and no way am I paying for two memberships to play games online. No way.

Eh, I'm probably in for
XB
one when it hits $349 or if I just feel like splurging this holiday season. Software isn't even close to interesting imo as of yet though. They got time...

The exclusive JRPG's and overall exclusives diversity early in the 360's early life was nice...but they dropped the ball and just kept pumping out Halo / Forza, both of which I don't play.

Unfortunately, they won't change...their exclusive lineup is specifically tailored to the U.S market, so it'll continue to be more of the same mid to late gen.

Absolutely nothing. While there are a couple of interesting games on the Xbox (namely Quantum Break, and Quantum Break), I would rather not buy two consoles again as I feel I won't get a return from my purchase, nor I am willing to pay for online subscription twice.

I also am no fan of Microsoft's willingness to share information with NSA. After all, they directly assisted NSA to bypass security for Outlook and Skydrive. Given the recent exchanges between the two firms, I don't expect things to be entirely rosy with the always on Kinect.

I'm just going to stick with the combo of PS4 + PC. Money will be better spent on a beefy GPU. Furthermore, Sony have a long history of releasing quality games right to the very end of the console. Shadow of the Colossus, God Of War 2, The Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, Gran Turismo 6.

Nothing.

I had an OG Xbox, my trust in MS was heavily damaged with the RROD fiasco and microtransactions with the 360, and they lost it completely with their original Xbone policies.

Only way I buy an Xbox product ever again is if the division is sold to another company.

I'm buying PS4 because Sony has 3 generations of proof that they support their systems and MS has 2 generations of proof that they don't. It being the stronger and cheaper system are just (very nice) bonuses.

I wonder how many people there are like me that have a console pre-ordered but fully intend to cancel it at the last minute unless something amazing gets announced. Could possibly affect them negatively in a big way.

Are you buying a PS4 over a Xbone just because it has better hardware according to tech specs?

No. Sure, the spec situation makes me comfortable that I'll get solid third party titles, but that's far from the full story. There's Sony's track record supporting their platform through the end of the generation. Aggressive pricing. Not having a living room setup that makes Kinect titles attractive. Lack of a clunky power brick. First-party exclusive studios that routinely put out software I enjoy. Enough worldwide enthusiasm to guarantee comprehensive support from third-parties. A philosophy and business model that attracts innovation from indie studios. Bluetooth device support. Isn't that enough?

Do you always buy a console based on raw specs? Do you scoff at Nintendo's attempts to produce a console...

Nope. I waited until a few weeks ago, but I did pick up a Wii U as well.

They can't. They wanted to screw us with their policies and they caved in only because of a shitstorm everyone made. Whatever they do, I won't buy it on a principle.

Bingo.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I feel shamed.

Nothing.

Like i've said countless times, MS showed their vision at their Xbone unveiling, they just postponed those plans for now but they will try to go that route eventually, i refuse to support that in any way.

Probably quite a few locked in a preorder but are "soft" supporters.

That week between the 15th and 22nd of November is going to be interesting at retail.

I don't think they can. Even if they dropped kinect and had price parity, it is simply not worth it at this point. Weaker hardware, too many paywalls.

Get rid of the forced kinect and some good games. I'm sure it will eventually be worth picking up. I feel like I don't really understand Microsoft lately and I'm hoping as the new generation goes on I will see software that makes it more compelling as a console. As others have said, a new halo that brings the magic back to the series would be sweet.

Microsoft needs to quit worrying about my heart for xbox 1 and starting working about my heart for windows. With steamOS, my only need for a windows is gone.

You must have missed that Kinect being plugged in is no longer a requirement.

I just have absolutely zero interest in the system, I'm not really sure if there's anything Microsoft could do. Their multimedia/TV/Kinect focus means nothing to me and their first-party offerings aren't really up my alley.

Cboat's post was 60sigh or something of the sort. I'm sorry but I don't take that as confirmation especially as it flies in the face of every statement made about family planning by MS execs when questioned about the issue. I know people are skeptical about MS and their intentions (and they deserve the right to be), but one thing they haven't done through this DRM gate is straight up lie. If there was any confusion as a result of wrong statements made by their executives, a press release on Xbox Wire or statement has been given to one of the major gaming outlets.

They never announced final details because it was never done. Multiple pastebins and CBoat have confirmed it. Every statement made by MS employees has had weasel words in some way. (Defining them as 'not trials' since they were full games, etc.) Heck, even Albert can't even confirm what language commands will work on the Kinect in each country at launch. IF it was as good as people made it, they could easily still make it work for download-only titles. (There's no need for a 24-hour check for titles you can't digitally resell. It'll always be attached to your account.) But they didn't. Because they couldn't get it off the ground. Even the 60-minute trials on PS3 are behind the PS+ paywall. Rockstar hates demos. A lot of publishers do. EA demos expire. The Wonderful 101 demo has a 20-play limit before it dies. This sharing would never fly. Heck, Activision won't even let you play your PS1 PSN-purchased titles on your Vita because they wanted another re-license fee.

Look at everything announced with this device. EVERYTHING is delayed and not ready yet. YouTube uploading won't be working until 2014. TV guide crap won't work in Europe either.

The Steam 'sharing' won't even work if YOU are using your account. ONE person at a time works with it, INCLUDING yourself. That's not sharing. That's remote access.

The people that say this truly believe the MS was going to allow you to share complete games with 10 friends. It is such bullshit.

Not to mention the "it would be just like Steam!" trick. If Microsoft wanted to seriously compete in that space, they would have offered enough competitive advantages to make gamers prefer XBL over Steam as a digital gaming platform. XBL never had anything close to a Steam Summer Sale, Steam cards etc.

Damn, even the PS+ is already a much more valuable offering than the XBL ever was. Microsoft runs the first "free game" programme and what do we get? Defense Grid? Seriously!?

It's also fascinating to see them taking functionalities away like Family Sharing and saying "see? you could have had this and much more! Too bad you complained!" and have people actually supporting their position.
