How can Microsoft win back your heart for XB1?

  • Everyone involved with Xbone's pre-"reversal" policies needs to be completely removed from having anything to do with the console.
  • Aggressive support for non-shooter/FPS/sim/sports, Indie, and Japanese games
  • Make Kinect optional
  • Drop the bullshit extra $100
  • Get rid of paywall for things like Netflix, etc.
  • Actually compelling (non-timed) first party exclusives

Basically they'd have to completely strip away the core identity of the console/brand and all the unappealing shit it stands for.

My 360 has been in the loft since I was done with Horizon last year. After 2 generations of basically abandoning at a certain point, I certainly don't trust them in this regard anymore. Everything that's happened with the XB1 this year also has left a sour taste, so for me...I won't be jumping in, just watching from the sidelines.

Nothing. They've still got the best next-gen offering, for me at least.

edit: ...and to everyone asking for Kinect to be removed? Never gonna happen. It's a core component of the system, not some off the shelf accessory like the PlayStation Camera. The reason today's Kinect is underused is because it was never included with every system, which is certainly gonna be a problem for Sony in the future.

err how are people coming to the conclusion that forcing people to buy Kinect 2.0 means people will be suddenly be interested in the software? I always thought that software sold the hardware. If there's interesting Kinect games, then people will buy Kinect.

Because forcing it into the ecosystem results in better software. It never works sustainably the other way round.

They need to release a handful of interesting exclusives. I'm not into Gears of War, Halo, or Fable. Forza looks good, but it's not enough to make me buy a console for it since there are similar games for PC and Playstation. If they release Lost Odyssey 2, Culdcept 3, and Blue Dragon 2 as exclusives then I might consider picking one up.

Because if the Kinect is optional, developers are less likely to use it for new/interesting/cool things. By making the Kinect mandatory (everyone who has an Xbox One has one), developers are far more likely to experiment with the hardware and improve the overall experience.

Better Kinect experience means better Kinect games means people start getting interested in Kinect.

Does MS have the hearts of anyone? They bought their way into console gaming, but they are such an unlikable company.

Why would you give your heart to any corporation? They don't want your heart. They're after your money. And of course they bought their way in. So did Sony. No one just gets invited in. As for likable, I don't like any of them. They're not likable companies. If anything, I respect Sony right now but have zero respect for how MS and Nintendo are running their console businesses. Microsoft is powered by arrogance and Nintendo appears to be fueled by incompetence. Sony's in a great position to capitalize on that.

If the Kinect experience was so important to Microsoft for gaming, why are they delivering nothing that utilizes it well at launch other than the console interface? If MS isn't committed to the hardware for gaming, why would any other dev?

Exclusive games (I care for). Moneyhats don't count in my book.
I'll check 2 years from now if something changed in this regard, but I don'expect much.

Despite being a huge fan of MS's products (loved the Xbox 360, own a Surface, use a WP8 device daily), I'm not sure I can be won back. That May reveal with subsequent horrible policies and daily bad PR (which went on for months) showed that MS doesn't care for it's customers all that much. They only changed course when the preorder numbers showed they fucked up. It's bothered me so much that I'm getting an iPhone the next time I get a phone and I'll be going with a PS4 or a gaming PC as my main gaming machine next year.

The only way they could win me back is with a removal of Kinect, removal of paywalls, and a game line up that would blow me away (probably never going to happen with how poor MS's first parties are and it's obsession with shooters). Even then it'd only be as a secondary device.

It doesn't seem like they truly care about their games either. They've been making consoles for 3 generations now and Nintendo, Sony, even Valve to an extent have a better library of characters and games than Microsoft has in my eyes.

Agreed. They really screwed up with me. I was day 1 on the OG Xbox, Xbox Live, and the 360. MS showed me what their future looks like (greed), I'll never trust them again.

I don't get this thinking, you think SONY isn't out to make $$?? Why do you think they are charging for online play now?

They said the same thing about DRM and with the flip of a switch. It is gone.

All the 180 flipping is what's got me watching from the side lines to see if MS drops the Kinect too.

So was the DRM.

/clap

Yeah, and that turned out well. Most of the suggestions I've seen in this thread are asking for Microsoft to basically put out a product that completely reflects the PS4. Why don't you just... buy a PS4? Or accept that some people want different product offerings to others?

They already have, sort of. I definitely do understand the concerns about Microsoft's original vision and the possibility of them returning to it, but if that happens, I will sell my X1 and I will just stop caring. Simple.

I am definitely in the minority here but at E3, I was so hyped for PS4 and did not care at all for the X1. A few months later, I have cancelled my PS4 pre-order and I now have an X1 on pre-order. Why you might ask? Well I am primarily a PC gamer so these consoles were only ever going to get my attention for console exclusive games. My original intention was to get the PS4 and have that as my main console for multi-plat console only(PS4/X1) games and later on pick up an X1 when they sort their shit out.

After the 180 from Microsoft and after the release of the launch line ups, Sony offered nothing for me in terms of exclusive launch titles and the X1 did. I have never had interest in Killlzone and Knack didn't do much for me either. I will admit Drive Club looks very very good but as a big fan of Forza I will have to side with Turn10 on this one. If PS4 had more then just 1 launch game for me then sure I will definitely bite on it and play both. But right now, X1 offers me Forza, Dead Rising 3 and Killer Instict and on top of that FIFA14 for free, a game that I buy each year.

Games such as BF4, COD, Assassin's Creed etc etc I will pick up on PC. If this were not the case, I believe PS4 would be the better choice of the two. But since I am a PC gamer, PS4 only offers me Drive Club which isn't enough to spend ~$650AUD just to have it at launch. I will buy a PS4 early next year when there is a few more exclusives to play such as Infamous and hopefully at least an announcement from Naughty Dog.

As far as indies, again, I have a PC for this.

Sony may start slow with their exclusives, but that's mainly because they've been releasing great exclusives on the PS3 up until the very end. I don't know if it's a smart thing to do but i think it's the right thing to do. The PS4 exclusives will come, and they will come until the last days of the PS4. You can count on that. Sony doesn't abandon their consoles and that's important to me. So i guess one thing MS can start doing is to stop launching strong and gaining a foothold and then start focusing on next gen half way through the console generation

I'm buying an XB1 because I want to play the games on it, my heart has nothing to do with it.

This.

Buy the console that has the games you want to play - everything else combined is still less important than the games because at the end of the day the console is just an enabler for the games.

Also, greed is a terrible reason to hate Microsoft and their console. Every company is out to make money, they are all greedy to some extent (not that Microsoft is that greedy - they give more to charity each year than almost any other company on the planet).

If they created a time machine and turned back time before they ever attempted to go through with that "NO USED GAMES" crap.

Then I'd like them to create the time machine again and integrate it into their XB1.

They have to get to the stony path that Sony took. Redeem themselves over time. No more bullshit, honesty and humbleness. I won't support them, as I don't support Origin. I might miss some games, but hell - there are enough games on the market.

Does MS have the hearts of anyone? They bought their way into console gaming, but they are such an unlikable company.

Both Sony and MS bought their way into gaming, and to be fair MS were already in the computer entertainment business and involved in games to an extent.

Regardless, the whole "win the heart" idea is just ridiculous to me. What does heart have to do with it? Does anyone feel Sony has "won their heart"? What a ridiculous notion.

These are publicly floated multinational corporations, not people.

They make products that you should buy if you want and don't buy if you don't.

I'm so tired of this soap-opera-isation of the world.

Buy a PS4 if you want the games and features of it, not because you think Sony is your pal. Buy an Xbox One if you want the games and features of it, don't spite yourself because you think Xbox is a nasty man in the cloud who isn't your pal.

Makes me cringe...

My heart is where Banjo-Threeie is. Announce Banjo-Threeie and you win one Yoshi-heart (and 500€ for the console, 70€ for the game).

I will eventually get the xbone for exclusives like Crimson Dragon, but as a main console it has already lost that spot in my living room. I'm only planing to get it at all because of the 180º, otherwise I wouldn't be touching it with a stick.
Actually microsoft seems to be trying really hard to sway me away from buying it. I couldn't care less if the system isn't has fast as the PS4 as long as there are good exclusives to justify it. What really makes me cringe are these characters like Nelson and Panello with their early 2000s style PR line and Atari Jaguar math taking players for stupid and thinking these will actually stick in this day and age. Microsoft never truly admitting they were wrong with their pre-180º business model, and instead implicitly taking players for stupid once again saying we couldn't understand their message. The corporate shills lurking in forums and comment sections (I know this isn't exclusive to microsoft).
These all make me think that I'll be buying an xbone despite microsoft, not because of microsoft. They simply have lost all credibility in my eyes, and credibility and consumer trust is not something you can easily regain.

As far as I'm concerned, the Xbone is a pariah for good reasons. There are simply too many fundamental problems with the console, their strategy and their attitude to fix.

The Xbox One has significantly weaker hardware that's already failing to deliver full HD games, and relies more on ill-defined techno-babble and clever word plays to compete than the actual strength of it's technical design. And it's US$100.00 more expensive than their competitor, which is boasting the most powerful gaming console ever created.
To win back, they'd need to drop the price point to parity, and produce a console that doesn't trade nearly a third of its resources for Skype and intelligent advertisements. They focused on the wrong things at a design level.

Of course, Microsoft are also moving forward with the monumental misstep of cutting major console defining features for some 75% of its launch market - no TV, no voice recognition, no game recording, no indie games - and ignoring all but the most dedicated of markets. They're rushing to launch, just like they did with the Zune, the Surface and Windows 8, and they're repeating virtually every major mistake their competitors made in the previous generation.
To win back, they'd need to halt the launch until they can deliver the things they're actually charging money for. The fact that voice recognition works in less than half of the launch countries when its the console's biggest advertised feature is fucking ridiculous. They need to pull back and launch when they're ready to win over the naysayers - which at this point, is the vast majority.

Even then, on the games front, they're simply focusing on the biggest establishments; Call of Duty, EA Sports and violence. They rolled out Minecraft - the most successful independant game of all time - as their "trump card" and were practically laughed off the stage. They have no idea how to lead the market, or provide a platform that fosters experimentation and development. This is hammered home by their copy/paste job after Sony crushed them with their own indie policies.
Due to the hardware, every single non-exclusive game will look and play better elsewhere. They've managed to bring nothing new to the table, and their one differentiation - Kinect - has been ignored even by their own first party studios.
To win back, they'd need to roll out a string of inventive titles that are given the same attention as EA, who've they basically let run their reveal. They'd need to justify their console against their competitor; explain why Xbox One is the place to play your games. And they need to show they're ready to make new and exciting games, not just moneyhat Crytek into producing a poorly made tech demo.

At the end of the day, Microsoft need to provide reasons to buy their console. They've utterly, utterly failed to justify the consoles own existence. It's not focused on games, it's not aiming to be the best, and it does nothing better than any other single device in the world.
The Playstation 4 exists with the express purposes of providing the best, most varied and eclectic games library on the planet.
The Xbox One exists because Microsoft wants to make money.
If they want to win me back, they need to show me that they're here to play some fucking games.

They seem so anti-consumer that at this point it'll be hard. Sure, I'll get one because I try to buy every system out there, but anything that can be bought anywhere else, will be. They could try:

- Making Live worth the money like PS Plus by giving away more free games
- Getting rid of Kinect
- lower the price of the system. $100 more for a system that's weaker makes no sense
- Getting more indie games on board(probably shouldn't have alienated those developers this generation)
- Do longterm investments in exclusive games and franchises, specifically in those outside normal blockbuster genres. Timed exclusives I'll get elsewhere
- Paywall for stuff like Explorer or Netflix is just ridiculous

And the sad thing is that even if they did all that, they'd still just reach parity with Sony. As such I doubt they'll ever win me back, because in order to do that, they'd have to be ahead. Far ahead.

Does MS have the hearts of anyone? They bought their way into console gaming, but they are such an unlikable company.

They had likeable elements: Dead Rising 1, Mass Effect 1... Peter Moore... Giant ass controller that gave the console some character. They just got rib of all of them in the last 3 years.

Sony used to be the multimedia box with all the bluray nonsense.

Yeah, and that turned out well. Most of the suggestions I've seen in this thread are asking for Microsoft to basically put out a product that completely reflects the PS4. Why don't you just... buy a PS4? Or accept that some people want different product offerings to others?

Removing the Kinect requirement wouldn't change anything.... The developers would still assume I am using it.

Base model for $399 and will be backwards compatible with the previous Kinect if you already purchased one.

A warranty that protects your system until the next generation of Consoles. So if you get a RROD your good until the Nex Gen Console release.

Region Free

No need to connect to the internet at all including Initial setup.

Game included in the box. A legit game. like they use to do in the NES days..

have Rare reboot some amazing games such as Jet Force Gemini, Battletoads, Banjo-kazooie and conkers...

Not hide anything and be clear about your policies and explain it.

not back peddling

AAA exclusives

more indie games

and work on your PR....

and maybe I might consider purchasing an xbox1.

Nope. If developers know that only a fraction of Xbox One users own a Kinect, they won't create features or experiences that leverage it enough to require mandatory use.

Dropping the kinect which will never be hooked up in my home would be a good start, also a pricedrop or two, since they are the weaker system. 300 euro seems like a good price.

But most importantly: first party games. Not buying up third party games ( aka taking away multiplatform games ). But from the ground up, built for the system, from teams built specifically for this purpose games.

If MS would develop games like: Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, Killzone, R&C, Beyond/Heavy Rain, Infamous, Team Ico games I would buy their system.

I am most excited about the Black Tusk game, and I know nothing about that game. So more truly awesome exclusive games.

for me they just need to drop kinect. i don't want to be forced to pay for a peripheral i don't want to use. i rushed out and bought a kinect originally and what a mistake that was. drop kinect and the price drops and it could be a very expensive november for me because i'd buy both consoles.

Two straight generations, MS has not followed through. They're in it for a half-gen as far as I've seen, and I don't care for enough of their game catalog. They've contributed to console gaming in some great ways, but I don't see a need to own their box.

They can't, at least not at the moment. The damage was done last gen with their crappy customer service, trouble cancelling credit cards etc, and the red ring of death. Everything they have done so far shows that they are aggressively pursuing their own interests at the expense of the customer.
And their turnarounds, desperately trying to save face at these criticisms only make them look weak and indecisive. Add to that the surface tablet and Windows 8 and you can see that the company is in shambles.

Get rid of kinect in the box would be a great start.

Show an amazing game that I can't live without exclusive to Xbox would be another way they could win me back. And stop sounding like self important douches when talking about the One.
