How come the ps2 tactic didn't work with the psp?

I mean I remember when the ps2 launched, casuals rationalised the price by saying that it is a dvd player too. With the psp it it doesn't seem to be that way. Why is that? Is this the cause of the firmware upgrades?

Probably because many people would rather spend money watching movies at home than a verrsion for the road.

But the movie side is still doing decently.

There is one problem right now: The price of the hardware. Too high. Needs a drop to $199.

Dude, though I agree with you, I don't think it's the best idea to start another thread that will end in a DS/PSP flame war.

Course, that happens to 99% of the threads here anyway. :lol

This was definitely not the PS2's only "tactic".

Yeah, there's nothing that pisses those casuals off more than firmware upgrades.

no games :(

or it has games im not sure how the spin cycle is working today

What are you talking about? PS2 was launched at $299 just like PS1 same as Xbox, and Xbox 360 core pack. Why would you need to rationalize the price when it's still $299 for a game machine and DVD player in 2000?

Because the Nintendo DS is a much better system, and Nintendo is an infalliable bastion of happiness. This truth cannot be denied.

I think he's talking about people saying the PSP is too expensive, even though it has PS2-like graphics and can play movies and stuff that the average handheld can't.

DVD was a massive phenomenon, and caught on at an insanely fast pace ----- also, consoles aren't much different than DVD/VCR boxes, so the merging was brilliant on PS2's part.

But i can't see another media curve-ball like DVD anytime soon, for casuals to all sell their collection and start new...

and PSP as an mp3 player ... wheeewww... what a brick ----- I got sick of using my PSP for music and got an iPod nano --- The PSP inspired me to go with another product, like it inspireded me to pick my DS back up.

The problem is that the media to store video/etc costs a lot too. You don't have to buy memory cards to store DVD movie data.

Cause Sony handled their awesome piece of hardware like a piece of shit?
Right now it's in that awkward stage where it's trying to compete with the DS and the iPod and they're doing a pisspoor job of both.

Well, one reason that was so successful with the PS2 is that DVDs were a really booming industry. People had pretty much recognized that the VHS's time had come and gone, and were waiting for a format that provided much higher visual/audio quality, better controls, things like that. DVDs were popular and were quickly embraced, and they gave consumers everywhere the sense of security that the format would be around for a long time to come. It was also a pretty broad-based format in terms of how you could use them everywhere.

The UMD, despite the first word in its accronym, is not nearly as universal as the DVD was. It's a much more limited media format, and with its introduction, it just wasn't something people craved as highly as they did DVD players. Not as broad based, not thought to be as long lasting, limited to only one single device. People were ready to throw away their VHS for DVDs, but not many people want to ditch their DVD collections to buy the same stuff on UMD, at the same price, but with less content.

That's not to say that UMDs/the PSP have been unsuccessful... but if anyone expected the mass media culture to embrace it as fully as it did the PS2's DVD capabilities, that was just nuts. UMDs could never have offered the same cultural significance that DVDs did.

People already had DVDs, that's why. With PSP, they have to buy all new media to watch anything. Furthermore, the PS2 came out against the backdrop of a dying Nintendo 64 and floudering Sega Dreamcast. There was no way it could have failed.

Many people at the time of the PS2s launch were also looking to get a DVD player for their home so Sony sold extra units because of it. At this point in time people aren't looking for yet another form of hardware to offer portable video. The market place is saturated as it is with things like laptops to Ipods to $80 portable DVD players (with 8" screens) that will be compatable with all the DVDS most people already own.
UMD movies exist just to sell more software on PSP (licensing $$ for Sony) not too make anyones life easier/better.

I'm sorry, correct me if I'm wrong, but each PSP isn't coming with a USB cable and software to easily handle the transfers of data, right? And the game catalogue is still embarrassing.
I don't know what the fuck Japan has to do with any of this except you're all fucking batty.
