How do you feel about giant phones/phablets?

4-4.5" depending on the thickness is the sweet spot for me. Screen quality also is a huge factor, but we aren't discussing that right now.

Thats what the junior Apple fan would say. Respectable community leaders such as Tobor and Gary Whitta would insist 3.5" is the perfect size for at least half a year before they are forced to upgrade to the glorious 16x9 screen under family pressure.

I'm buying on day one, fool!

Taller is ok, I'm just glad it's not wider. That would suck. Also, I was scared they would fuck up the pixel density, but it's exactly the same!

I actually like the iPhone's current size. Perfect for one handed use. The larger phones have advantages, like it is much easier to reply to emails or post on GAF with the extra space for the keyboard.

Hopefully Apple offers two sizes for the same price. Android could do with more high end small phones as well. Not everyone needs a 4.5" phone, but obviously it is nice for those who want it.

I went from an original Moto Droid to the Galaxy Nexus, and IMO the Droid/iPhone size feels better in the hand for most tasks, but the Droid was too small to type onscreen with so I was constantly using the slide-out keyboard. Gal Nex is the perfect size screen to type on, and I'm not sure I'd want to go back to having to slide out a keyboard.

I mean, is the galaxy nexus too wide for you? Because it's about a centimetre wider than the iphone.

If it can't fit in my pockets comfortably, it's too big. I think 3.5''-4'' is the ideal size I'd go for a phone. If the new iPhone rumors are true, then that'll be perfect for me.

I find it incredible that the people who currently own iPhones but would like larger screens are practically non-existent.

I'm not saying this sarcastically or anything, I just really find it mindblowing.

Based on what? GAF?

I know I would have no problem with a larger screen. I just have no interest in Note sized screens.

It's coming full circle.

But yeah, it's getting stupid. I am still rocking my 2008 (windows mobile 6.1!) HTC Touch HD because almost everything coming out is larger and the HD is a little too big for my liking as is.

Current iPhone is 5.8cm wide, and 11.5cm tall. 3.5'' screen
Galaxy Nexus is 6.8cm wide and 13.5cm tall, 4.65'' screen

Is it the size of the screen or the size of the phone that is the issue here?

I sold my Galaxy Neuxs. The size were incredibly ridiculous. Went back to iPhone 4 which feels right. Now just lessen the bezel and make it smaller and thinner thanks. I like Nexus' thinness and weight though.

Size of the screen or size of the phone? I am really curious as to which one is the issue for most people.

Well both. It truly feels too big to have in my pocket while it's cumbersome to use with one hand, very cumbersome - at least to me. And I'm a guy with big hands. I'm no fan of iPhone 6 getting bigger as well but I haven't hold one.

I think they are stupid. 4 inches is my max for a phone. Maybe 4.3 but that's pushing it. I say 4.3 because that can be done by decreasing bezzles rather than increasing the phone size by a lot.

I have no problem using my Galaxy Nexus with one hand (that's pretty much the only way I use it). Without repositioning the phone in my hand I can easily reach every corner of the phone and beyond with my thumb. I could easily use a 5" phone one handed.

Going beyond 5" is just a software issue. If the interface is designed well, one handed use of 5+" phones should be no problem with good, creative software solutions. For example, it is much easier for me to type text messages one handed on a 4.6+" Android phone with Swype than on a 3.5" iPhone. The argument that larger screen sizes make one handed operation harder does not ring true for me at all.

I obviously can't speak for everyone but size of the phone is my issue. They are obviously very related to each other though.

Size of the phone.

But... its* 1 cm wider, 2 taller and actually a bit thinner than the 4s. Is that 1cm width make or break? Screen size I understand for usability, but physical size?

*Edit: Galaxy Nexus - 4.65 screen size.

I wasn't sure until I got the Galaxy S3. I no longer consider a 4.8 inch screen large.

my iPhone is a curiosity to me; the screen is way too fucking small and now I'm wondering why I never picked up on it before.

It's still a centimeter in the wrong direction. Why can't I be glad they kept the width as is?

I can't understand a centimetre in width being a significant enough alteration that any person would think "Oh this is WAY too big, 1cm smaller, is just right!"

it seems ludicrous to me. Full on Luda.

Size of the screen for me especially with touch screens. One influences the other though so same to me.

I understand if the larger screen realestate is an issue. Personally I had a 4'' phone originally and just bumped to the Nexus - and honestly it doesn't feel any different. In size of phone or size of screen.

But I have giant hands, so I can understand a screen being an inch bigger could give some a few issues.

Using a 4.5" phone, I would definitely say this is the sweet spot. I used a Galaxy Nexus and S3 which are slightly larger and they feel just as comfortable.

Beyond 5", and it gets too big for one-handed typing in portrait.

Ok? I still like the width as is.

Ideally, I'd rather Apple had kept the screen size at 3.5" and shrank the overall volume. But I get that this has positives I will appreciate, like a larger battery, and extra screen real estate.

If they were to offer two models, I'd take the smaller one.

I didn't realize that a centimetre could be so make or break. Seriously, not trying to sound snarky, it's just mind blowing to me.

I don't understand why you keep saying that? I'm not going to buy a Galaxy Nexus for multiple reasons. If it was on my list, I doubt the centimeter would be a deal breaker.

It's not about the Galaxy Nexus, I'm just using it for it's dimensions. I keep mentioning it because I mean... the discussion is still going.

If the iPhone was 1cm wider, what you're saying is it wouldn't be a deal breaker, correct? Which is my whole general point. If people want to say that the phone is physically too wide, it seems like any phone at that width would be some huge issue. But 1cm width wouldn't be any different in a pocket, and in fact it being thinner would probably even things out in that field. I don't -understand- how it is an issue.

If you just want to say "I don't want a non-Apple phone" - I can at least appreciate that.

I figured that was obvious. Lol.

Let's put it another way. There's two new iPhones. One has the exact measurements of the iPhone 4S, the other has the exact measurements of the Galaxy Nexus. Specs and features are identical otherwise.

I would take the 4S sized phone, hands down.

I don't know how to explain it and I'm not even going to debate, fact for ME though is, that the Galaxy Nexus DOES feel larger in my side and back pocket. Those are some lose pants and not cowboy pants. Thankfully it also feels lighter but I didn't go back to my iPhone because it's an Apple product - I bought the Nexus cause I really interested in that device and OS too but it just didn't work out for me. :)

Doesn't that equal out to somewhere near half an inch wider and near an inch taller?

It wouldn't bother me, but it's not really that hard to see that some would find it noticeable.

Do people really use the iphone one handed? How do you type? Easier for me to use a big android phone with swype one handed over the 4s.

Easier to surf too I'm always zooming things with the 4s and that requires my other hand where the bigger phone that zoom isn't needed.

It's funny, cause I can zoom on my iPhone 4 one-handed by pinching. Though it's easier to double-press, it's still possible for me to pinch-to-zoom one-handed.

And yes, I thought it was normal for anyone with an iPhone to type one-handed?

Yes, all the time. I type with my thumb.

they are so frustration! i habitually put my samsung galaxy s1 in my front pock. as i get into my car, it becomes wedged between my inner thighs/crotch region. then the text messages arrive. vibrations. female crotchinal region. driving.

the bigger the better. gotta consume that content comfortably, not squinting.

I have noticed that certain squint 3.5 inch device users have!

What about the "hold the screen as close to the face as possible" move? I see this all the time on the train, my god, it's truly hilarious.

God, I just remember trying to read back at old messages while poking out a new one on my old phone was impossible.

Totally agree, it is much easier to type one handed with Swype on a Galaxy Nexus than it is to use an iPhone

Main reason for me to buy a smartphone was to browse internet and play games.
So i chose galaxy note. How do you even browse web on 3.5inch screen i dont know how you can call this thing big.i have small hands and i am perfectly able to use it with one hand.
But yeah during calling someone it does look slightly big

I'd totally use a Note if it was on my network and I didn't already have an iPad. I mostly use my phone for texting and web browsing, and my American man hands are too big to use the iPhone keyboard.

Phone needs as much screen real estate as possible while being able to slide into my pocket. At this point,I use it more like computer than against my ears.

I prefer phones on the smaller side, iphone is a good size right now and my current galaxy ace is just about perfect, reasonable screen estate and fits in my pocket without fuss.

I can see how something like a 5" hybrid phone/tablet can be useful for people but myself, no thanks.
