How important is family approval to your g/f or b/f?

I ask 'cause I recently met my g/f's mom, as well as her sis before that. Thankfully, they both think I'm great. G/f said that if her sis had a problem with me, then WE would probably have a problem. She's really tight with her and all that.

So yeah, how important is it for you or your spouse to get along with their family?
 
Ok, I had to go through this meet the family bull shit over the summer when I had a girlfriend. It sucked, her parents really didn't seem to like me, although my girlfriend claimed they like me, but YET at the same time said they kept asking when she was going to "stop hanging around me". I got sick and tired of constantly feeling a bit disliked by her family among other things and called it quits.

I don't know yr age but I'm in high school and I've decided that as long as I'm in high school and some chick's parents have to be a part of it, I'm holding back on trying to get with chicks until college.

At 23 how often would you have to deal with her family? I was just wondering why she would care whether her sister approved or not. Unless you both live with your parents and I assume you both do.

But I wouldn't care what my bf's family thought of me. As long as we didn't have to be around each other then screw 'em.
 
Completely depends on how tight the girl is with her family, and then further how strict and fundamentalist the family. I generally don't give a shit what other people think about what I do, which would apply to any relationships, but at some point it just is not worth it. For that matter, I'd probably prefer a girlfriend who wasn't particularly tight with her family, or at least one who also needed their approval for how they handle their life, which it sounds like yours did whether in such explicit terms or not.

And I should say I've had some funky experiences past the whole high school thing, even when no one's living with parents. You still manage to find girls, or people in general, who revolve around their families.
 
Well, we've actually hung out with her sis a few times already. She's cool though so it's no biggie. And yeah, we both still live with our parents (she's 20).

Really, I'm going on 3 hours of sleep right now and haven't posted in a couple of days so felt the need to post...something. And this is what I came up with. Weeeeeeeee!
 
I think it's extremely silly to let your family's personal dislike for someone you're dating influence you at all (unless they know something terrible about them, like they are really not the gender they claim). Seriously, they don't have to hang out with them much,so if they find them annoying, boo hoo. They don't have to have sex with them either, so their opinion about appearance is irrelevant.

I stopped caring what my mom thought after showing her a picture of an ex of mine, and she said "*SIGH* You can do much better than that. Why would you date someone overweight?" My mom has learned to keep her criticisms to herself unless they are important, and I have no idea if my current significant other's family likes me or not. Nor do I care. They live in a different city, and I see them like twice a year! YAY!
 
I would like to have approval but if not its not a big deal. B/c i know any girl i go for isn't a big slut bag, and usually has great values just like me. But even per say i didn't get family approval it wouldn't be to big of a deal i jsut wouldn't talk to them very often. Maybe a visit two or three times a year. And if they really care about me being happy then they will accept her and not have ill will towards her.

i agree 100%. my last serious gf, who i dated for 10 months, happened to be hardcore family. it didn't bother me at first, but over time, i noticed and felt that her parents really weren't warming up to me. it was odd; at first, they loved me...as time went on, though, their feelings couldn't be mistaken.

since she was 18, i was always at her house as she wasn't "allowed" at my apartment. it got to the point where i only ended up going to her house 2-3 times a week, instead of the normal daily occurence. she asked me why, and i told her that her parents and attitudes were really bothering me... she couldn't believe it, reassuring me that they love me, blah blah blah, they're just protective.

but u can't shake the feeling or perception that you're not wanted in their daughters life. shortly thereafter, we broke up.. this, among others, was the deciding factor..
 
I'd never give a shit about what my parents thought about any girlfriend I'd have. I'd probably worry about her father though, just....because.
 
Honestly, it doesn't matter to me at all. If im serious with a girl, they're gonna have to get used to her, period. Plus, i know how my family (especially my mom and her side of the family) can be. They gave my uncle shit for years because he got engaged and later married and older woman (she's only like 7 years older, but had a kid from a previous marriage). They practically fucking disowned him and wouldn't even invite her over to family get togethers and shit, and for no fucking reason either, she's actually a really nice woman and everyone gets along now.
 
I dont give a fuck what my or her family thinks.

I cant help but think you guys dont have that strong of a relationship if you'd be in trouble because her sister doesnt like you. You seem to be very expendable.
 
Although my family's disapproval of someone isn't necessarily a deal-breaker, it's a HUGE plus when my family likes my girlfriend. Also, given my family, any girl who didn't get along with THEM would raise an immediate red flag. I think it's pretty much impossible to dislike my family.
