How long is a commute to work too long?

Used to be an hour and ten minutes each way. That was the limit. I'm now at a more reasonable 15 minutes each way.

Anything over an hour is pushing it.

With the state of commuting in London, unless the job pays well I am not spending more than 40 mins - 1 hour on public transport.

an hour is like the upper limit, anything beyond that and you're getting into full on ridiculousness territory.

I think anything over a half-hour commute is not worth it. My drive is around a half-hour, usually more depending on traffic, but it's mostly worth it.

2 hours total journey, like from the door of my home, to the door of work would be the maximum I could do.

EDIT - By train, but certainly not by car.

I uproot. I have a little fund where if I find a job somewhere else, I have enough for a month+ deposit on an apartment. Not going to travel more than an hour unless we're talking $80k+

I used to think a 30 mile drive was ok.

Then I moved half a mile from work and started walking.

I can't even stand to be in any sort of traffic anymore.

More than 45mins is a waste as you lose time for a second/complimentary job early. One hour+ is madness and you should relocate.

I had a 2-hour commute for an internship last year. Suffice it to say, that was far too long. Still worth it. It's gotten me several great freelance gigs since I worked there.

It depends. The job I quit a year ago was an 1.5 hrs each way but I hated it (the job). Imo if you really love a job a commute like that won't set in so hard and so fast.

Once you hit 45, you're starting to get too long.

At 60, it's too long.

Anything more than that is bonkers to do five days a week and absolutely takes a toll on your mental health.

My commute is an hour in the morning and 2 hours in the evening due to traffic.

Mine is 1 hour in the morning and 1 1/2 in the evening but it can be longer, depending on whether the train is on time. It definitely is too long.

My commute is like an hour-50 minutes (with busses and trams), I have seen people on GAF saying their commute is like 3 hours. Absolutely crazy.

the longest i've had was about 45 minutes, usually longer going home.

it paid terribly but i was extremely desperate for a job at the time. i would consider anything over 40 for a job that isn't paying you very well to be too long.

edit: taking public transportation into account would drive that number higher though. being able to spend part of a commute actually doing something other than sitting behind a steering wheel would be more tolerable.

Anything significantly over an hour each way should be reserved for your dream job. Life's too fucking short to be throwing away that much time on top of workin it away.

It's different on public transport since you can read or play games.

At least for me. Driving you can do audiobooks/podcast.

OP I'd definitely recommend getting a hotel, preferably on their dime, worse case on your own.

Commutes are weird though, I think there's a lot of variables to consider:

1) What is rush hour traffic like? My 30 mile commute from my parent's house was a manageable 50ish minutes in the morning, but there was too much variability coming home. If I was lucky, it was the same 50 minutes, most times it was closer to 90. You have to think if you can tolerate the commute during the shittiest part of the day.

2) Are there flexible work arrangements? Can you work from home one day a week? A longer commute might be more tolerable if you make it four days instead of five.

3) Is public transit an option? If you gave me the option of 45 minutes by car, or 45-60 minutes by train where I can comfortably read a book, I'd take the latter every time. Driving sucks

edit: Also right now my commute is 40 minutes or so each way with very little traffic variation, but I'm moving in September and I think it'll be at least 45 minutes in the morning and around an hour coming home. A little longer than I'd like it but I'd rather live in the city with a longer commute than move out into the burbs

My tolerance for long commutes is counterbalanced by the substantial increase in rent I'd have to adjust to living <30 minutes from work. I can put up with a lot.

If I was to take transit: anything over about 45 minutes (factoring in waiting times).
If I was to drive: anything over 20 minutes

I've never had a job I had to drive to, always been a 5-10min walk to one, two of my jobs were a 1min walk from two seperate places I lived at!
As long as there are no jams, you can get anywhere under 20mins here if you do drive, so I'd say that.

I can't comprehend people who drive over an hour each way, fuck that - no, aaah.
One of the upsides of living on an island!

Mine is 40 minutes and it's still tolerable. I'd say anything over 1 hour per one way would start to feel tiresome fast.

I did an hour, one-way, for 13 years. I didn't mind it driving in, but driving home got to be pretty terrible.

I kept thinking about finding something else, but I never stopped getting promoted.

I don't think I'd do that again, regardless of what the opportunity was

I am incredibly spoiled as I have been taking a combination of a short bus ride (~10 minutes) or walking (~25 minutes) when the weather is nice for the past ~6 years.

By car: anything over 10 minutes.

By public transit: anything over 30 minutes.

Walk/bike: anything over an hour.

I guess anything that's significantly longer than 1 hour would be too long for me. Currently my commute to work is 30 mins by bus but during semester my commute to uni is often ~1 hour (via public transport) so I'm kinda used to longer commutes

My current commute is about 10 minutes by bicycle (about the same by car because I have to go into an underground parking lot and that takes some time).
Last workplace was like 15-20 minutes. When I lived at my parent's house before that it was 40 minutes to an hour.

Never going over 30 minutes again. And 30 minutes only if it's in public transport (so I can at least read or snooze during that time).

I've had to do 1h15 to 1h45 each way commutes before, I can handle it when everything works fine but throw the occasional sickness/train traffic issues and it can be a pain.

Shoutouts to getting stuck an additional hour in a train without air conditioning during a heat wave and just roasting in there lol.

Parisian ?

I doubt anyone is going to say their own commute is too long, haha.

Mine is just under an hour. I've had it for the past year and will continue with it for at least another year. Still deciding if it's driving me crazy yet.

I think overall you kind of "get used to it", but it's frustrating as hell having to navigate accidents and stalls on the roads, which seem to happen every single day and screw everything up.

If a commute is over 30 minutes, it's too long for me.

This. I previously had a commute of 2 hours. This was only temporary until I relocated, but it was awful. I had about a 45 minute commute when I was in college. It was a bit too much, but I think 30 minutes would be tolerable.

I currently have a commute of 5 minutes and it's glorious. I would prefer no more than 15 minutes.

John Oliver should do long commutes. Richest country in the world with an incredibly high quality of life but we still bamboozle ourselves into sacrificing 3 hours every working day getting to and from the office. Awful!

My commute used to be an hour each way but now it's more like 10 minutes. Loving life.

My commute is 8 minutes. One of the perks of living in a smaller city.

I don't think I could do more than a half hour commute. As it is I feel like I barely have enough time to do what I want with my spare time. I don't envy people doing an hour or more every day.

I think more than an hour each way is what starts pushing it into the unenjoyable and taking too much time out of each day category. Currently mine is about 20 minutes which really isn't too bad.

Worst I ever had was two hours to and fro. That's right, four fucking hours every day. I only lasted two weeks. Fuck that.

45 minutes there, 45 minutes back. It's tolerable. I call it my podcast listening time.
Anything over an hour in both directions I think would get pretty damn old pretty damn quick.

It depends. The job I quit a year ago was an 1.5 hrs each way but I hated it (the job). Imo if you really love a job a commute like that won't set in so hard and so fast.

I had a great job with a commute that was more than 90 minutes each way (3h+ round trip).

If the job is awesome you can ignore it for awhile, but after a few years you start to realize how much the time adds up and how many other things you're missing because of it.

I have a 1 hour commute and I hate it, especially since I had a 5 minute one at my last job. But hopefully once I the project is done I can get something closer in the fall.

I live 6 miles away from my office. Takes close to an hour most days to get home. Buckhead to Decatur.

Too long...

45 min each way 5 days a week as an absolute top end

My limits are 30 minutes if driving, 1 hour if taking public transportation.
weird distinction
