How many Japanese-made games from this gen can you name that don't include fanservice

The subject field is only so big. I mean arbitrary sexual content that is clearly pandering and serves no greater intellectual or contextual purpose within reason. And by within reason I mean that if the greater context reads like justification it doesn't get a pass.

Cool. I get the topic now. :)

well, looking at the top 20 from this week's media create chart I see a lot of Japanese developed games that would appear to lack sexually attractive characters.

this is the most popular game, at the moment, in Japan:

Fuck she's hot.

So basically you're saying "if I don't like it I'll label it and condemn it with extremely sloppy use of language and come out looking correct no matter what you say, god dammit!" ok

no offense but this is a very poorly thought out thread... there are a lot games that implement the kind of fanservice you detest in the industry as a whole, not just Japan

Then I'd argue that the Dark Souls example doesn't really qualify. Gwynevere has an ornate, regal outfit to match her ornate, regal surrounding in Anor Londo. It's revealing, yes, but clothes like that could indeed be pretty revealing historically. I think that's enough context for it not to be pointless pandering.

Japan's best sellers: Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Mario, Pokémon. This thread is silly.
Dragon Quest has Jessica and Puff Puffs are a recurring gag, albeit one that's been axed in localization at times (and DQIX is one of the guiltiest of the other type of fan service), and I'm sure some of those Monster Hunter outfits must be skimpy on women. Holds true for Mario and Pokemon though, or it's too mild to really count.
Tsunade is in both games.
I was kind of expecting that, and either way it IS based on a manga for teenagers. Having some pop up is very likely.

Gywnevere's appearance does have some symbolism behind it and it fits in well with the themes of the game. Also you saw her after a brutal boss fight and it was FROM's way of apologizing.

Are you really tempted to start jerking? That's kind of weird. Prepubescence at it's finest.
But, Demon's Souls. And Gran Turismo! And... Resident Evil?

So it was a reward? Sounds like fanservice to me. /not fully serious

Rather than repeat what I remembered (especially in case I was messing it up) I just found the interview where her design was discussed. Miyazaki just wanted a giant woman, designer made her big breasted and was too happy with the design to be turned down. So while there's symbolism otherwise in that case it's more, uhh, self service.

One of the biggest reasons I'm not into Japanese games as much anymore is because they keep trying to make me jerk off to them and I don't want to and I get kind of weirded out that they are so into the idea of making their audience masturbate.

Is that honestly what you think of the industry over there? Come on...

Quick name western-made games with no brown! Go go go!

.hack//Versus doesn't got any fanservice so that's another ta add onto the pile.

Folklore, I think.

Eternal Sonata... maybe? I don't remember anything too fanservice-y in that anyway....

Do 999/Zero Escape count as this gen too? But then again boooooobs.....

It'd be fairer to make the same challenge here though: what core games don't have fan service too? Just look at Mass Effect, especially
EDI's camel toe
. They may be a bit more conservative in some ways, and you do get games like Gears of War that seem so testosterone infused that FUCK FANSERVICE I NEED TO CHAINSAW MOTHERFUCKERS, but otherwise it's absolutely there.

Honestly, it's not fan service at all and the design works perfectly for the game. She's pretty much the only beautiful thing in the whole game, and yet
she's just an illusion and you find out when you join the last covenant that she's long dead, which fits perfectly with the hopeless nature of the game
.

When I think of a goddess, or even historical goddesses in ancient religion/mythology, they're often renowned as creators of life, or the embodiment of fertility, or nurturing motherhood. Nothing about her design strays from anything I'd picture in Greek mythology for Aphrodite.

To make it that far in Dark Souls and to then stop and proclaim "FAN SERVICE! I see breasts!" really does sound like some kind of extreme sexual phobia.

But they already had Priscilla. I guess she wasn't big enough.
I think the "giant woman" thing is meant more to evoke a sense of motherly protectiveness, going by that interview.
The fact she's really an illusion speaks volumes.

While there's merit to that point, I find arguments like yours are seriously putting too much faith in their intentions when the guy clearly just wanted to draw a woman he liked.

I could pretty much list 90% of my Japanese games. The other 10% includes "sexualized" stuff like Tekken and Fire Emblem. I can't get over this thread, lol.

I also think it's funny this is another "Nintendo doesn't count" thread. If you let them into the party, there's probably a bigger percentage of western games with fanservice than Japanese games.

After seeing what "certain" elements of the fanbase are capable of... I don't think any Sonic game doesn't have what someone could consider fanservice.

I can't think of any Japanese games that have sex scenes, or even kissing.

How many western games had sex scenes this gen?

I can think of very few games this generation that do not have fan service, but I'd say Blue Dragon does not have much if any.

The Earth Defense Force games do not. Kingdom Hearts does not (the closest might be Kairi or the Disney Princesses, at worst). Dragon's Dogma has a character with large breasts, but she wears a normal dress so I am not sure that's enough to declare it fanservice.

Sonic Generations, Final Fantasy 4 Heroes of Light, Ys 7, New Mario bros Wii, Dragon's Dogma...
Man, the
reveal the main villain had her throw off her conservative robes in favor of being barely clothed.

However, there is a point made that there's a distinction to be made between fanservice and just going for a sexualized appearance. Fan service implies it was mainly done to make the audience, especially fans, happy, but it's possible some of these are just for self gratification (Gwynevere most notably). And sometimes, yes, there is a point to the designs (I think Ys Seven's was kind of following an archetype there and it wasn't ridiculous otherwise).
