I'm on a 5 year old custom PC build:

Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB
Intel Core i5 4690 3.50GHz
ASRock Z97M Anniversary (mATX)
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 970 (MSI)
Corsair 500W PSU

I will upgrade late this year when (hopefully) AMD Ryzen Zen 3-series releases + NVIDIA 3000-series GPU's. I will start with 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz (O.C'ed) and probably add 16GB more 1 or 2 years after if needed or a good deal comes around.

Still deciding on another 16gb ram and a new gpu, or buy an XSX. I'll always consider myself a PC gamer now after going PC only this gen, just too much freedom, but in the short term, an XSX would be cheaper meaning i could save up.

Nah, i7-3930k on a Asus x79-deluxe Motherboard if I remember correctly. Still holding up to this day

That’s probably right but the differences to real world performance are probably negligible. I haven’t tested it but I’ve never really had a problem running most gamed maxed at 1080p since I first bought the PC. That said I haven’t been playing game’s on PC for years now...

32GB DDR3 back in 2014 when it was cheap, not sure how good it will be for next gen games tho (4790K CPU). I expect probably OK with an upgraded video card (current: 1060 GTX 3GB).

I recently built a new machine.

My old ( 2011 )Sandy bridge i7-2600k had 16gb and the security patches tanked my performance.

My new Ryzen 9 3900x is sporting G.Skill DDR3600 64GB. I started with 32GB, and loaded cities skylines, and had just enough to load into ram without thrashing.

So I let insecurities set in, sprung for another 32, ( also because i thought Ryzen did quad channel ram, learned the hard way it caps at dual, Memory timings are way more important )

Some other specs: 2TB (Microcenter brand) NVMe gen 3, GTX1080, Asus Tuf x570 w/ wifi

Worst mistake i made was getting 2x8gb when i bought my PC, as RTS demand tons of ram, so now maxed out at 32gb with i went for 2x16 so i could upgrade in the future. But oh well.

64G RAM, 11G VRAM

The idea of larger RAM is for developing apps and/or assets in Maya, Unreal Editor, Unity, etc.. but also can be used as a RAMdisk which will be faster than any SSD (assuming the game takes advantage of it).

next pc for me will depend on what directx storage api bring for next gen games.
if it uses free ram like consoles use ssd i 'll go 64go and won't even change my current sata ssd.

Recently unpgraded my rig but before that, I managed to beat Resident Evil 2, all 4 playthroughs, on an i3 6100 on a B150 mobo, with 4 GB of DDR3 1333 MHz DIMMs, and no dedicated GPU, using only the HD 530 iGPU from the CPU.
Yes, I'm a patient man.
